I don’t think anyone reasonably expects that the next-gen Switch successor would somehow be the same price or lower than the current model OLED sku, which has been $350 since it launched 3 whole years ago. Which as recently as 2022 Nintendo was still making a smaller margin on per unit at $350 than they were on the $299 standard OG model.

If they even hit $400 it would be pleasantly surprising.

Hopefully base doesn’t mean a full digital system.
Hopefully it means we get options. I see no point buying a physical media version of the Switch, and would prefer an option to skip having a cart slot at all at a cheaper price.

My fear is the launch model will be LCD only. I don't think I can downgrade from the Switch OLED back to an LCD pannel, unless its an Apple tier miniled with a very high zone count, but Nintendo would never spring for that.

They better not do a digital sku vs a cartridge sku. The value proposition for a second version better come from upgraded storage space, a controller or game included. The trend of no disc drive, or in Nintendo's case no cartridge slot in a sku pisses people off and that's the last thing Nintendo needs to be doing.

He has to keep his fame going so I'll take it with a grain of salt. Until we see it and what it can do, I've no idea either way if $400 is too steep, too cheap or fine

I don't think there will be much cost savings in removing the card reader, it's not as complex as a disc drive.
Although maybe they can supsidise based on the fact your paying eShop prices.

Hmmm. Base model with 8 inch 1080p LED screen: $399, 256 gig internal memory with included stand and disc slots! :messenger_winking_tongue:Sorry just had to)

Pro Switch 2 with 8 inch 1080p OLED screen $499, 500 gig internal memory

He got the Pro date very specific way back in May, so chances are he's legit in some capacity. Kinda crazy that the best leaks of the year have been coming from Discord chats 😂.

Anyway, $399 for the base model is more than what I was expecting, but I guess that one might have more than 32 GB of internal storage and probably has the same screen as the upper model. Probably also comes with a dock. All that considered, $399 may not be too bad.

Physical BC is the only spect I need. The rest would be a plus.

Do not like the idea of two versions.

It's not gonna be like the Series X and S situation; the two models will be equivalent in performance. Just one will likely come with less internal storage and maybe some other accessory or non-essential feature missing (weaker WiFi, for example).

I'm curious if the base model sticks with $399 or comes in closer to $349, though. $299 is probably out of the question.

Nintendo makes too much money from physical sales to cut off a big portion of their audience with an all-digital base model. That'd necessitate more storage in said SKU, meaning regardless of price Nintendo's probably making less margins on it.

Not worth the tradeoff vs. having cartridge support on both, but cheapening out on storage capacity for the base model. That way the user either pays for more storage or spends more on carts. I'd imagine Nintendo also gets bulk pricing discounts for cart manufacture supplies, and you'd maximize those prices and supply volume advantages by having the largest addressable base for the carts. A digital-only base SKU nerfs that pretty hard.

I hope it's not just a storage (or OLED) upgrade but a more premium-feeling device, metal construction, non-toy colors etc. Hopefully Nintendo realizes that there's a market for +30-year old manchildren.

I'm almost 100% sure they won't do that since the cartridge reader is a very cheap component compared to a blu-ray disc drive. Even the cheapest SKU in the current line-up has it (e.g Switch Lite) so it's probably costing them like $5 or $10 at the most to include one. And on top of that, physical is still very strong (especially their 1st party games) on Nintendo consoles.
