PS5 Reveal and Xbox Showcase Could Come Sooner Now That E3's Cancelled
PS5 and Xbox Series X reveals and announcements originally planned for E3 could be coming quite soon, according to an industry analyst.
Phillip TinnerApr 19, 2020

With this year's E3 cancelled over coronavirus concerns, the PS5's reveal and games showcases for both it and the Xbox Series X could come sooner than expected. Sony has unveiled the specs of their next-gen console but not the console itself, and there are surely a host of exclusive announcements that each company were stashing away for this year's now totally vacant convention season.

It's as strange of a time for console manufactures as it is for their quarantined customers, and Microsoft and Sony may go down wildly different routes to show off their new machines in response to the ongoing global health crisis. Although Sony planned to once again snub its formerly annual E3 showcase, the crowded field of gaming industry conferences that revolve around E3 still greatly affects the company's timing when it comes to announcements. And there will almost certainly be no shortage of those as the year goes on, with first-party exclusives being in the later stretches of development and each console being tentatively slated for launch during the 2020 holiday season.

One games industry analyst says that the information vacuum left by E3's absence will be filled sooner rather than later. Daniel Ahmad took to Twitter to share the below tweet, claiming knowledge that the cancelled conference's scheduled announcements "have been moved out of that single week," with some of them being moved to take place "much earlier" and others pushed back to "much later" dates. While admitting that some public reveals will still take place as previously planned, Ahmad also claimed that the "first proper next gen console/games showcase is much earlier," which would be an unprecedented and exciting development in such an uncertain time.

With E3 cancelled, a lot of the planned reveals / announcements have been moved out of that single week.

Some are now much earlier, others much later. Some still during E3 week ofc.

The first proper next gen console/games showcase is much earlier too.

The obvious question is what the biggest news of an upcoming next-gen showcase will be, as there's still so much about either console and their launch lineups that remains unknown. It could be anything from a full reveal of the PS5 console and its features to a sizzle reel of what's been going behind the doors of Xbox Games Studios, and there won't be any way of knowing for sure until leaks spring or the announcements suddenly drop online. Taking the current pandemic and the logistical hell it's causing for virtually every business on the planet into account, Ahmad clarified that this bizarre situation is still unfolding in a follow-up tweet and "COVID-19 could actually change plans right at the last minute."
Tough times and cool heads may have inspired a cooling of public tensions between Sony and Microsoft, but there's still a console war brewing for this holiday season (barring disaster-related delays, of course). Players with limited cash will have a choice to make when the PS5 and Xbox Series X come, and well-timed announcements could prove key for either company in their battle to coerce customers to their side of the aisle.

They could also come later. Not that PS5 was ever on E3's timetable to begin with.

Next month for some Xbox stuff. Maybe more console news. Hell, even price and release date. June for games. (xbox stuff... no idea of ps news)

As soon as they can nail down their supply totals for FY2020 is when they should move forward with their respective marketing plans. The disruption introduced by the pandemic is far-reaching and it's not about whether you can build enough systems but if there is enough money in people's pockets to reliably get out of the gate.

Yeah yeah, we've been hearing that the full reveals are coming soon for too damn long. I'll get hyped when it happens.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Sony needs to step up to the plate and start selling the potential of their system. They've allowed MS to win the specs game and the messaging has been utter shit.

If Sony can put together a press conference like the one they had in Feb of 2013 for PS4, and actually show the console they will be fine.

It could be.

They may reveal PS5 in April. Or in May. Or in June, July, August, September, October or November.

And sure, a ton of companies had announcements planned for E3. Now without that event, they may announce them anyways but maybe some days after or before the ones they planned to avoid overlapping a ton of annoucements the same day.

Other companies like Sony who weren't going to be at E3 may not announce anything around E3.

Yes, Rockstar is working in GTA. And Nintendo is working in a new Mario. And EA in a new FIFA. And Activision in a new Call of Duty.

You don't need to be an insider, it's common sense.

It doesn't matter much, the consoles will be released near the end of the year... They could reveal them in mid-September for all I care.

This is bullshit. All they had to do was release a PS5 logo and a picture of their controller to get attention. Their history of success and the strength of the PS brand affords them the time and place they choose to fully reveal the PS5. MS has everything to prove. Sony IS proven. Until their quality of games and consoles slip they've earned the benefit of the doubt people give them.

Hard disagree mate.

A logo and controller reveal generated lots of social media interest. Its a very good indication the general public are very much interested in what Sony has to show.
There is always time to do a full on console reveal but they sure as hell are not going to feel forced to show anything. That's not how any of this works.

Both companies have different strategies and plans that are put in place years ahead of time and that includes their messaging.

Can't agree here, they already have a proven track record of the potential of their system every gen, and that's their games! and as others stated, a logo reveal and controller
they already exceeded what MS did with their full reveal in terms of interest.

I just think they want to hold off because they don’t have anything that is gonna look like hellblade in terms of detail. Right now they have a lot of people following them on blind faith. It’s deserved but they want to keep that going as long as possible

I think both the Xbox games and PS5 (console and games) will be revealed in May.

The biggest megaton of the next generation would be the PS5 at $399. If Sony could make it happen, they win by default. On the other hand, if both consoles are 499, then Xbox is going to be a huge competitor this time around, and it's going to be very hard for Sony to win.

Sony only need a few remasters at launch and they will sell millions. People don’t realise how much microsoft need to do to get some market share next generation. Sony have added so many exclusives that you would really have to be tough minded to only get a series x.
