I’m not sure about how accurate some of these numbers are as the guy pulled them from the store page although PS5 definitely tends to have an advantage overall.

Hitman 3 is 64.9GB with everything installed on XSX not 77.8GB.

Subnautica is 5GB on PS5 not 3.8GB.

Immortals is 30.49GB on PS5 not 22.3GB.

Tony Hawk is 22GB on XSX not 31.9GB.

Valhalla on XSX is right but the PS5 version is apparently 61.5GB not 41.8GB but I cant check that.
Can't confirm or deny others, but Subnautica is definitely ~3.5. There is, however, a buggy EU/UK version that can sometimes incorrectly download multiple language files that push it to 5 GB. But the non-buggy US version is around 3.5 GB.

Fair enough, but don't forget gamers like me have the seagate expansion card giving us more than double the default storage space for Series X titles.
Why should that matter? Other gamers also have double storage by buying two PS5… so ;)?

I get the cost difference, but I am not sure you are making the point you think you are making, but you are proving the need to buy more HW add-ons to worry less about storage issues on XSX…

I'm in the UK so could be bugged. There is nothing in manage game so I can't enable or disable any additional language packs.

Here is Immortals with no DLC:

If those numbers are true, then the whole comparison is FUD.

If the guy only had a PS5 and was comparing his file sizes to what the store displayed the XB Series file sizes were, then that's completely understandable. Even if some games ended up ultimately being smaller in size. He's just comparing his file sizes to the data available to him.

But if he's consistently only over reporting the XB Series games file sizes, while simultaneously consistently under reporting the PS5's game file sizes then that's entirely different.

I don't personally know all the actual sizes though. Just saying that if your numbers are correct, then it's likely deliberately skewed for warring purposes.

LOL at this PS fan nonsense. When you can have had 3 SSD's hooked up to the Series X and an Expansion Card on the PS V come back to us

Well Bo is gonna Bo of course.

In this specific comparison though, we have to pretend that your SSD's don't exist in order to make the two comparable.

Awaiting my ban in 5...4...3...2...

Xbox Series owners could expand their SSD space from day one. And it seems that these install sizes are wrong.

Also, the Series SSD can actually be replaced inside the console, while the PS5 is soldered on it, which makes it even less repairable.

Mark Cerny was confident during the March 2020 reveal that by fall 2020, there would be compatible PC SSDs to hook up.

It's now May 2021. Still waiting.

Gamers were amped up that PC parts would mean a flood of compatible SSDs for dirt cheap to install. Might not even be allowed this year.

Could this difference be related to XSX pushing higher resolutions therefore requiring larger files for textures and so on? I don't believe that a compression method alone would make such a larger difference.... It is not like that the Xbox implementation is totally garbage. Also, a lot of these texture files are binary files so they don't really benefit the same way as other file formats from compression. But yeah, I could be totally wrong here.

Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem you are missing Mass Effect LE in your list

All of these asset upgrades amount to one thing: a huge install size for the Legendary edition. In fact, the remastered trilogy comes in at 88GB on Xbox Series X, and 101GB on PS5 right now in European territories

Do you have examples? If yes, then post, report to mods and get the thread closed.
Just a quick check on my xbox and Tony Hawl is actually 22GB on Xbox

screenshot from reddit but I have verified it on my console as well

I'll be curious if it holds true once we're into pure "next gen only" territory. We've already seen Sony's new compression setup applied to PS4 games to great results; does Microsoft's touted Velocity Architecture need specialised implementation, or are we seeing compression ratios that will hold across the generation? And on that note, could Sony's 1st party devs drive the file size down even lower once they've got a handle on the PS5's IO setup?

If LOD's are eliminated you could use that extra headroom/space to raise the asset density or benefit from smaller games. But nothing like that yet and could start with UE5 games.

Interesting and all these have around the same load times no?

Perhaps PS5 games can't use this superior compression and also stream in more data at the same time because the superior compression takes a bit longer to process. So you won't get the faster I/O speeds if the files are using the max compression rate?

Also I'm curious if BCPack is not being used on MS's side due to PC versions not being able to take advantage?

Kraken is 297% faster than ZLIB in decompression, so no. Also it's not exclusive to Sony, they just licensed it so devs could use them for free on PS5/4. Any platform or publisher could licenses them as well, and could be included now with Unreal Engine after Epic Games bought RAD Tools.

RAD (and now Epic) gonna be making out like bandits if Sony's decision to blanket license Oodle to their developer program creates a defacto standard moving foward. Smart move for them to ensure that compression and the kraken speeds for their platform. Just a shame it's not an open source standard like zLib, though clearly it's more effective right now.

It's not exclusive to PS5, they just licensed them in advance and made them free for the devs. Any publisher could use them and would work well even on Xbox with ZLIB decompressor or on PC on the CPU.

I read the comments in the post. There’s some inconsistent data reported by the OP. It appears they have listed the MS store install size vs. the actual install size of the latest version on the SSD.

Some games like Tony Hawk 1 + 2 are actually 22.0 GB instead of the 31 GB listed according to some posters in the thread (a screenshot proves this in a reply). Hitman 3 was also described as being 65 GB instead of 77.

I also noticed not all native PS5 games that are multi-plat are listed in the sample (NBA 2K21 is a notable omission). To label this list as a comparison of all native PS5 titles is a misnomer by u/pmartinez52.

I’m glad to see that the PS5 compression is making the most out of the space available, but this post lacks attention to detail and is misleading.

EDIT: corrected name of Hitman

I think it should. Maybe we can crowd-source some data here to have a more accurate list.

The PS5 versions may still edge out the Series install versions (of which there are two, S and X). But the gap is much more pronounced according to this list.

Only used the numbers from the source. Any one providing any solid sources would edit the OP. Also some regions have different sizes due to language packs.

No NVMe support is a bummer but not going to pay the current price for it anyway. With all PS4 games stored to external I must say the PS5 has some headroom, after all the internal is used exclusively for PS5 games. The last purchases haven't been big with RE Village at sub 30gb ish. Its fine so far, good thing I don't play CoD.

What does Direct Storage have to do with game size? I thought the only reason why the PS5s is smaller is due to the compression used.
What would stop Xbox from using the exact same compression algorithms? At this point we need more data as to why they are bigger.

What country are you from? It depends on the language packs as well. Here is Subnautica being 3.75GB

Yes but the official figures did not take Oodle Texture compression into account. There could presumably be a sweet spot where compression past a certain point takes additional time.

So essentially PS5 devs would have to choose between equal file size to XSX (and faster I/O) or smaller file size (and a similar I/O speed)?

Oodle Texture compression is done prior to game compression, so the final results only has Kraken compression and decompression. If it was automatic then text will degrade eventually the more you play as it's a lossy compression vs lossless Kraken/ZLIB. Also Kraken is 297% faster than ZLIB in decompression so no it's much faster than ZLIB on XSX or any other platform. XSX could use Kraken as well but it's accelerated by Kraken Decompressor on PS5 so it's much faster than CPU-based numbers of 297%.

NBA 2k21 is 96GB on PS5. 121GB on XSX.

Good, will add it to the list with a (*) later.

What would stop Xbox from using the exact same compression algorithms? At this point we need more data as to why they are bigger.

Nothing, and I think that what RE8 is using it in both consoles.

So just regurgitating something that fits your warrior narrative without any thought to its accuracy.

Seems about Bo.

You can always contribute to edit the OP accordingly or continue bitching about it. This goes to all here.

Not sure Bo's done anything wrong here. Hasn't been antagonizing anyone, and just posted a list. People are welcome to dispute the contents of the list with facts, if they want, which is what I see some people doing.
If I just posted a made up list from some Xbox subreddit, i'd very likely get banned. Just saying.

Not saying Bo should get banned btw

Don't know how to take a screenshot of the XSX dashboard but here is Hitman 3 with everything installed.

I think at least some of the difference is the fact that PS5 just installs English for me where there is a choice. Maybe XSX is just installing everything which is clearly not ideal when SSD space is limited but maybe not indicative of better compression.

You can share data to correct it, or report the thread. The choice is yours. When provided with data I'll simply update the OP. I personally don't have all data on the matter, hence used the source (which could as well be wrong in some numbers, or confused with pre-install sizes).

Updated the OP. That is more than enough, no need for in-console screenshots.

Thank you for your contribution.

Exactly. Added what SlimySnake SlimySnake and Low Moral Fibre Low Moral Fibre shared and edited the data. More contributions are more than welcome.

I asked remedy's communications guy on twitter about controls file size on xbox. Here's what he said. If they were using it on xbox, wouldn't he have said they are already using it? Look at the file size on PC which don't have decompression blocks.

Updated the OP for XSX, thanks for sharing.

If you may share XSX filesize it'll be better. Decompression blocks don't compress files, they only decompress to stream data from already compressed files.
