PSM tidbits - online, final hardware delivered

If you've ever followed Sony hardware you know that alot of the times they don't say shit, they just sit back and let other people hype it. And then they'll start hyping it themself.

can you appreciate why this fucks some people off?

I love sony, but their fanboys will take something like "online plan coming" and extrapolate that into "free online, better than X360 live, downloadable full lenght movies for $1, demos available for PS3!"

It's like the demos - we've seen a couple of demos (one or two of which were CG) - now every game on the PS3 is going to look like that (see: Bandai "oh well if Bandai can get that out of the PS3...."). The worst game on PS3 is going to look like MGS4 , but the best game on X360 is going to look like Frame City Killers - it would seem.

I'm pretty sure this isn't an accident - Sony are deliberately letting the fanboys ignorantly create the hype. then Sony can say "but we never said any of that!", which the fanboys will then use "Well, Sony never said any of that, it was the magazines that said that!"

I don't think many in this thread are saying it'll be as good as Live. I really don't expect it to be overall, I just expect it to be good enough that there won't be much of a reason to complain about it. It's better than the people that seem to really believe Sony isn't going to do shit with their networking. They're just going to repackage the PS2's online and say "Here, enjoy this".

It's marketing, what's wrong with that. MS didn't have to show a bunch of games early on that looked terrible and had bad framerates. It was their decision. Sony wants to get people in the frame of mind that it is superior hardware, how much that's true remains to be seen. But its clear they're getting their message across.

It's not that it's a bad tactic, it's just sad to watch that intellegent people are falling for it all over again.

who says that it's one sided? there are morons on both side of the fence - point at them over the "wanker barrier" doesn't make the sony side any less complicit in the hyping.

also - are sony only lying to the "opposition" (actually, in this case i believe it was a shareholder meeting which would be a little strange) ? Or are they lying to everyone but you don't care? ;)

you tell me , they are lying about the large price tag (i assume that is your implication) - so why would you believe anythign else?

(like the status of the dev kits, the rollout, any problems, "killzone" etc etc)
 
I wasn't saying they were lying. I was saying they hype what they're putting in the system (like the PS2 with the EE and DVD player) so much that people are lead to believe that its real expensive. But when the real price is announced it seems like a great deal because of what the price was thought to be originally.

Alot of people will say that no one will buy an extra 360 or pc to run a server, but they are wrong, the same people that run pc servers would love to do the same for console games. That's what I'm talking about, your old, dead PS2 being your PlayStation gameplay server instead of buying a whole new PS3 or even PC. ]Star Wars Battlefront PS2 allows you to set up a PC to play PS2 games online (never tried it, but it's got to help.) If the PS2 were used as your server, you'd probably have to have an extra monitor or TV switcher to handle it unless it could USB out to an in-game sub-menu on PS3 (or maybe the same USB, connecting to a PSP?), but that wouldn't be much more complicated to manage than it already would be with a PC server.

So, back to my stupid question (I'm guessing servers like RAM, and that's something PS2 doesn't have much of...just curious), would the PS2 be alright as a server or should I start looking for a a nice place in my attic right now to store this thing?

wow, that sounds great if true. i do hope it's true. i'd love to see them really push Xbox Live hard... Live is already awesome as hell, can't imagine what else can be done other than a few minor tweaks here and there, it's already perfectly what i've always wanted.

somehow i am REALLY doubting this news though. didn't msft spend half a billion dollars establishing XBL and not only that, have started with it way back on xbox one and kept buliding it up over time, learning as the go, improving as they go, tuning as they go, to get where we are now? and now you're telling me sony is just going to dump something superior right out of the gate, first time up? scuse me if i'm driving a dumptruck full of salt.

p.s. is the ps3 even coming with a HDD? (i don't actually know, sorry if this is known stuff, i'm just not up on it all). if not, then i call bullshit.

Well I assumed he meant it would cost more than the PS and PS2, at least. Otherwise how is it expensive?
 
Oh it probably will be more than the PS2. My point is that he never set a comparison like "It'll be expensive like this (insert product)". I think it'll be anywhere from 300-400. Not the 500+ some have speculated because of the CELL and BR.
 
PS1 and PS2 both launched at 39800 in Japan, which is almost $400. That might be expensive to you, but to Japanese buyers it's the norm now.

indeed- as mentioned previously, the impression is that a full roll out has happened which doesn't appear to be true.
 
It strikes me as odd that they even went as far as making the kind of statements they have, regarding the cost of the system. They've never made those sorts of statements in the past, AFAIA.

Before this blows out of proportion, I think there's but zero quotes from Sony in this article. It's all PSM's stuff based on "sources".

Hmm, well was there any truth to this statement?

Honda's comment: To complement Kutaragi, apparently SCE told partners that PS3 would be sold under 40,000 Yen. So far PS1 & PS2 were launched at 39,800 Yen so they are not very expensive. But, as PSP was launched at the "final price" that contains no further pricecut, PS3 may launch at 39,800 as the final price without pricecut in the near future. Anyway PS3 will be launched at a price well in the range of a common sense

Please reread. FMT and Willy Wanka are saying they want to pay to play online because otherwise a free service probably won't be good enough. But with the 360 most of the "service" is provided OOTB upon registering a free XBL silver membership. That the ability to play a game online in peer to peer fashion (no hosted game servers) is then locked behind a subscription does nothing to ensure the quality of the service.
 
I think the money they get from gold members is subsidising the silver service though. They wouldn't give all those features for free if there were no revenue at all.
 
surely these games must cost something - even the peer to peer ones....

i assume so given the price of gaming here where $5 is the minimum per game.
and hell - we are talking ULTRA bare bones here.
 
why should we pay to play peer to peer games? we host them ourselves, and we certainly wouldn't pay for them on pcs. with xbl you're not really paying for a service; you're paying for access. i like xbl, but there's no fundamental reason that it should cost $50 a year, and its essential features aren't things that cost a lot to provide.

Some people in this thread are really obstinate. Reading what they had to say I was almost convinced the PS3 online service would be worse than the PS2 network plan :lol

Why? Offer the non-essential feautures for those who want the extra fluff and don't mind paying for it. Offer the bare-bone feature for those that want a more PC-like online service. As it is now XBL is a rip-off if you only want to play some p2p games and nothing more.

God, I hate the way Playonline works. I would rather avoid online completely than have to deal with Playonline.

after xbl, i do not want to go back to not having everyone under one unique system, having to coordinate games via MSN or whatever.

Whether it's worth it or not is up to the individual - all i know is that if i boot up my x360, i can look and see which of my friends are playing what and move from there. *shrug* i'd pay the price of half a pint of lager for that a month.

I personally feel that having the bare bones is a step backwards from what we have, so i hope sony don't listen and go ahead and make an X360live style all-encompasing service which stops the japanese companies raping people for online gaming (in Japan)

Anytime Im reading a forum about a subject that may involve two or more competing companies (that carry with them the appropriate amount of loyalists in return) and I see a post that starts with the all too common premise "I love (insert company here), but their fanboys"...Well my brain starts to turn off. Because I know its going to be some incredibly boring bullshit. If you want to list the "special traits" for every generalized group of over-zealous corporate sychophant partisan morons, I guess we could be here all day. Im just at a loss what these trite little "fanboy analysis" that crop up time and again exactly add to a thread besides encouraging more nonsensical baiting. Who honestly gives a shit? Fanboys are fanboys are fanboys.
 
So has anyone confirmed or at least hinted at the fact that final hardware has been released. PSM can't be the only people with inside sources. Last I heard, people were still waiting on the kit with the final gpu.

A B3D member (Barbarian) seemed to give way that whatever studio he works for got final kits recently. He's got a good rep there so I assume he's legit, although Im not sure what might seperate his NDA from some of the other guys.

Direct quote (in response to a statement that final kits started going out post December)-

His comment isn't necessarily an indication that it's final final hardware, though. He was talking about finally getting RSX in, but there was talk previously that RSX had shipped in dev kits to some developers, but that it was underclocked, and that the busses hadn't all been sorted out yet and the like.

Then again, maybe the system he's got is final. But it's not entirely clear.
