If you've ever followed Sony hardware you know that alot of the times they don't say shit, they just sit back and let other people hype it. And then they'll start hyping it themself.

DCharlie said:It's like the demos - we've seen a couple of demos (one or two of which were CG) - now every game on the PS3 is going to look like that (see: Bandai "oh well if Bandai can get that out of the PS3...."). "The online service is being designed to also work with the PSP and its games. Think one, BIG Playstation network!"
Why? Anyone else can do it, that's a pretty smart marketing strategy I think

I don't think many in this thread are saying it'll be as good as Live. I really don't expect it to be overall, I just expect it to be good enough that there won't be much of a reason to complain about it. It's better than the people that seem to really believe Sony isn't going to do shit with their networking. They're just going to repackage the PS2's online and say "Here, enjoy this".
It's marketing, what's wrong with that. MS didn't have to show a bunch of games early on that looked terrible and had bad framerates. It was their decision. Sony wants to get people in the frame of mind that it is superior hardware, how much that's true remains to be seen. But its clear they're getting their message across.
They seem to be able to get people to fall for alot of stuff. Like that their console has to be an insane pricetag because of the technology.
DCharlie said:also - are sony only lying to the "opposition" (actually, in this case i believe it was a shareholder meeting which would be a little strange) ? Or are they lying to everyone but you don't care?![]()
CamHostage said:Can already host on your own in some games, is that what you're talking about? You can set aside a host in SW Battlefront, although I've rarely seen that done.
I'm curious, how well a PS2 would serve as a PS3 game host? It's 32mb of RAM (?) and no HDD, but will game hosting of P2P connections for a set group rely on big hardware? (I honestly don't know, just putting it out there...) Everybody's PS2s will become closet bricks as soon as PS3 ships anyway, it'd be a very small machine to keep on your rack as a host, plus Sony wouldn't have a security problem with talking to the machine since they control it (PCs might make them nervous), the PS2-to-PS3/PSP server software could be released by the company or even by Sony (if they could do a one-game-fits-all solution) on a printed PS2 disc without some homebrew hack and with user-friendly instructions, they could even exchange memory cards or USB if there was anything complicated to setting it up and managing it ... Is there any potential there?
LAMBO said:When you run a dedicated server in the pc world, you take a pc and set it up to be the server. You can't play(you can watch) all the server does in host the game. The host has the power to control any aspect of the game(kicks, bans, game rules, maps etc.)I'm hoping with consoles you can either use a second 360 or a pc, and use it as a dedicated server
...
Alot of people will say that no one will buy an extra 360 or pc to run a server, but they are wrong, the same people that run pc servers would love to do the same for console games. They love the control, and i love the fact that someone is controlling, on a well run server you'll have no cheaters or people using glitches for advantage.

I'm pretty sure this isn't an accident - Sony are deliberately letting the fanboys ignorantly create the hype. then Sony can say "but we never said any of that!", which the fanboys will then use "Well, Sony never said any of that, it was the magazines that said that!"
Did you conveniently forget that Kutaragi himself said it would be expensive and people would have to work overtime to buy one?SolidSnakex said:I wasn't saying they were lying. I was saying they hype what they're putting in the system (like the PS2 with the EE and DVD player) so much that people are lead to believe that its real expensive. But when the real price is announced it seems like a great deal because of what the price was thought to be originally.

Well I assumed he meant it would cost more than the PS and PS2, at least. Otherwise how is it expensive?SolidSnakex said:No I remember that clearly. I also remember he never gave an indication of just how expensive it'd be.
BS. Maybe Naughty Dog, Zipper, or Insomniac does.Sony has just delivered the final development hardware to U.S. game developers.
So what do you what them to do? Read GAF everyday and release a weekly report on what's false and what's correct?

Jonnyram said:PS1 and PS2 both launched at 39800 in Japan, which is almost $400. That might be expensive to you, but to Japanese buyers it's the norm now.
Honda's comment: To complement Kutaragi, apparently SCE told partners that PS3 would be sold under 40,000 Yen. So far PS1 & PS2 were launched at 39,800 Yen so they are not very expensive. But, as PSP was launched at the "final price" that contains no further pricecut, PS3 may launch at 39,800 as the final price without pricecut in the near future. Anyway PS3 will be launched at a price well in the range of a common sense
Please reread. FMT and Willy Wanka are saying they want to pay to play online because otherwise a free service probably won't be good enough. But with the 360 most of the "service" is provided OOTB upon registering a free XBL silver membership. That the ability to play a game online in peer to peer fashion (no hosted game servers) is then locked behind a subscription does nothing to ensure the quality of the service.Jonnyram said:"only" :lol
Of course you're paying to play online. That's the whole point of the different levels of service.
drohne said:why should we pay to play peer to peer games? we host them ourselves, and we certainly wouldn't pay for them on pcs. with xbl you're not really paying for a service; you're paying for access. i like xbl, but there's no fundamental reason that it should cost $50 a year, and its essential features aren't things that cost a lot to provide.
Speevy said:Then let's cut out the non-essential features and pretend people didn't work their ass off to develop the service. Set the bar low!
hyp said:![]()
this just in..., sony combines forces with square to consolidate its online services into the infamous PLAYONLINE.
we R not READY 4 N3XT G3N.
Why? Offer the non-essential feautures for those who want the extra fluff and don't mind paying for it. Offer the bare-bone feature for those that want a more PC-like online service. As it is now XBL is a rip-off if you only want to play some p2p games and nothing more.

I'm mostly excited about the software side of things, since Sony has decided to provide a down-to-the-metal API which makes me very happy."
