I, like half the world, signed up for netflix last weekend to watch AD. I'd heard a lot about Netflix over the years, it's apparently very popular. In fact, I apparently had a Netflix account back in 2006, when they sent you three DVDs at a time. Those were the days.

So I was looking forward to not just watching AD, but being able to enjoy everything Id been missing out on.

I was hugely disappointed.

For one, the site design is garbage. The search is poor, the menus are confusing and generally, it felt like a design that had never been tested

But the worst part was the content. Finally, I could watch everything I wanted!

I searched Southland.
Unavailable. Fuck, thats what I most wanted. No worries, no worries.

Its always sunny season 8 it is!
Nope, not up.

A guilty pleasure, the last season of Gossip Girl?
Nothing.

I've heard a lot about it but never watched. Game of Thrones?
Noooooo.

Hm. I guess Netflix is weak on TV shows. Lets watch some classic movies then!

Jurassic Park?
No? NO? None of them????

Fuck. Signs then..
NO!?!

Now Im mad. Lets get some blood going. Grindhouse?
Unavailable.

I don't even.

Ok. Maybe their back catalog sucks. Lets look up some new releases.

I never saw the Hobbit and........No.

Mother of....

Kids movies? Theres got to be fucking kids movies. Cars 2? No. Wall-e? No. Brother Bear? No.

Treasure Planet? Yes! They have one movie! They have Disney's commercial flop!!!!!! No John Carter of Mars though.

How about adult stuff. Pirates? Of course not....which also led me to see that Pirates of the Caribbean isn't around either.

So what the hell do people subscribe to Netflix for? It sure as hell isn't the context. Of every movie I was interested in watching, they had ONE. And at that point, I was reaching.

I was ready to give netflix monies after my free month ran out, to thank them for AD....but theres nothing to watch. Im looking at their new releases page, and Im pretty sure redbox has a better selection.

You thought every movie you wanted to watch would be available? Lol

It's 8 dollars a month.

Not having The Larry Sanders Show on DVD and Archer on Blu-ray is garbage. Never had any other issues with their selection.

Seriously. If you want new releases shell out the extra couple of bucks to have them send you the DVDs/blurays. Your expectations for $8.00/month are pretty ridiculous.

It's about a tenth the cost of cable. Even combining Netflix (with BD), Hulu, and Amazon it's a lot less than cable.

Count yourself lucky that you're not outside the US... your rage would crack reality.

(although, we do have most of the Disney movies you mentioned, and I did just watch season 8 of IASiP on my UK Netflix account... lulz).

I signed up to watch the new season of AD using the free month option and have come to same conclusion as you, unsubscribing soon.

I have burned through:

All of Star Trek (ALL OF IT!)
All of The West Wing
All of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
All of Angel
All of Scrubs
And a bunch of other movies and tv shows (but not full series).

Not everything is going to be in there, but there is still a lot to offer.

EDIT: Scratch that, didn't watch Star Trek: Voyager, because fuck Voyager.

Get a DNS service and access all the different Netflix services from different countries. Canada, for whatever reason, has a much smaller selection, but it seems to have more new releases than than the US version.

I treat it as a service where I can watch whatever things they have on it, and that makes me enjoy it a great deal.

Recently, I watched Arrested Development, House of Cards, Paranorman, and The Lorax. I would have normally spent a lot more to see those.

But, to each their own.

Netflix is great for discovering new things. There are a lot of quality films and shows on there, however you'll often end up dissapointed when looking for very specific things.

Just scrolling through the homepage I see:

Bernie
Bottle Rocket
True Grit
Warrior
Jackie Brown
Black Hawk Down
Mullholland Drive
Broke Back Mountain
King's Speech
The Hunger Games
Good Will hunting
Eternal Sunshine
Lost in Translation
Drive
Captain America
Ferris Bueller
Rain Man
MI:4
The Artist
Super 8
Memento
Being John Malkovich
Raising arizona
Witness
Top Gun
Hugo

All of which are good-great films. Try broadening your horizons!

I do the Blu-Ray rental but not the streaming. I pay for Amazon Prime for various reasons (free 2-day delivery for one) and it provides some good streaming opportunities.

I always found Netflix streaming to suck when I had it.

Don't search Netflix. Go to instantwatcher.com or check the GAF thread for recommendations. It's pretty great for getting into a TV show but not for new releases or very popular films. It has a lot of great documentaries, though.

Yeah, after hearing all of the hype I was sort of disappointed. I mean, it's solid for $8 a month, but it's not the godsend of a service I expected - I'll probably plow through just about everything I wanted to see before my free month is done.

I think you had some pretty unrealistic expectations. Also, protip: HBO stuff will never be on Netflix.

lol my first thought. You thought you would get any show/movie for $8 a month? :p

Watch House of Cards, OP. There's a lot of other good stuff on netflix, too.

You're using Netflix streaming wrong. You're not supposed to assume it has things you have in mind already; you're supposed to browse and see what's good. If there's something really specific you're looking for, that's what you use the mail service for.

There is plenty to watch, but you need to understand that Netflix is based upon things that are already on DVD. They used to have a terrific stranglehold on the streaming market but those days are over. Everyone else caught on and they've made it crappy for the consumer. Netflix still has PLENTY or terrific content to watch, but they're not going to have:

1) New Bluray/DVD Releases
2) Anything that isn't already on DVD/Blu-ray
3) Things offered on other services (Game of Thrones is on HBOGo, HBO's proprietary service) so they aren't going to let Netflix, a competing service, show them.

I agree op, I got a 1 yr code in that Samsung TV promo fiasco and have hardly used it outside AD, house of cards and the initial phase of "look at all this old shit, nostalgia mode activated". the streaming quality isn't fantastic either

you really need someone like apple to step into the streaming scene if you want everything plus the latest stuff. and it will be a fuck ton more than 8 bucks a month

Think of it as an "extra" in addition to the other entertainment options you have available, and try browsing instead of searching for specific stuff so you can get a sense for what they do have...

They actually have a very good selection of TV shows, just not the specific ones you were looking for, and you'll probably find some things you would want to watch but weren't thinking of if you go through them and browse a little. Same with movies.

But if you had some idea that it had a huge library where you could find anything you would want, then yeah, you're going to be a little disappointed. I'm sure it will be that good someday, but we have a few more years to go while the industry evolves.

Netflix is about browsing and finding stuff to watch. not magically summoning up anything you can imagine. Hopefully that'll exist someday, but the service you wanted doesn't exist right now. You really thought you were getting every movie ever made and every TV show released up to the episode of the current season for eight dollars a month? Why would anyone still have cable if you could get that?

You know that you could have checked if these titles were available on netflix before you signed up, right?

Sucks though. Netflix used to have so much more content before the content providers started to pull out (and make their own failed services) and raise their fees.

One thing that's good about Netflix's shitty selection of movies is that they force you to watch stuff you ordinarily wouldn't have bothered with. I've discovered some great movies that way.

Netflix is pretty great for pre-1970 movies. Saves me a lot of money that would otherwise require DVD purchases. You should be open to movies from that era if you aren't already. A lot of great, great stuff.

I feel you on that. A few years ago they had the best design of all time. Then they got rid of it but with a special URL you could still access the holy grail of Netflix designs. Then they destroyed it. Now it's all TV / iPad friendly even on the PC. It's absolutely horrible and I went from browsing Netflix's instant stuff to only watching what I know is there.
