ebay and redbox both have a lot to lose with this, i would not be surprised at all if they begin throwing increasingly larger weight around as time goes on

Amazon would too, though they might be considered a "participating" retailer. I still think they get a cut from private seller transactions aswell though, so it still might be cutting in amazons wallet.

Also this is good, the more attention this is brought to the masses the better. I know allot of people who rent from redbox, and gamefly personally.

How come the text says Xbox One and Ps4 yet the title only mentions Xbox One..

Probably because only the Xbox One's policies are confirmed as of right now. Whether the PS4 mention is indicative of anything is unknown right now.

Must be a Sony plant.

That was sarcasm in case you couldn't tell.

I hate the Xbone and all but I don't understand how Sony's silence means they arent doing the same.. if anything it would seem they are just avoiding bad press at this point.

Im a PC gamer and take no part in all of this but watching from the outside its super confusing..

Wait, don't you give out all those Redbox codes too?

I find promo codes on CAG/Slickdeals, yeah...and my own promo codes that I get from their text messages, when I rarely use and put them up on my Twitter.
But yeah, I found this out by a text they sent out earlier and dismissed it cause it was super vague, like "The future of video games is being discussed this week!" I thought it was just about E3...

It's funny reading the comments on the facebook page for Redbox. They posted a status linking to the site and asking about gamings future. A few of people on there saying "Gaming is making kids fat" blah blah blah "either minimize your kids gaming or get rid of it".

Yeah, I'd probably just skip something like that myself, it sounds so generic.

Get rid of it? Parents have been shot by their kids for less..

I wonder if stuff like this cropping up will force Sony's hand and have them make a statement? At this point if I were them I'd admittedly be staying quiet to use it as a press conference bomb, but failing that I sure wouldn't want to make people think my system ran the same as theirs if it didn't.

Why is it saying PS4? What kind of half right information

For the same reason that GAF is pushing a twitter campaign, their stance is far from clear. All you can do is keep the pressure on until they lay their cards on the table.

Mainly because they just do not know.
Until they have solid word they have to treat it as a business decision, they can not go on faith.

It says MAY, we have no confirmation on the PS4 yet.

Just because they choose to be silent doesn't mean they are innocent..

Personally I think that silence is damning.

It also does not mean they are guilty. Genuine question, why tease your fans on twitter about something that is clearly important to them, if your just going to throw it in their face? How is that a good PR move?

Also its not like Yoshida is a low man on the totem pole. If anything we would be one of the few who does know whats happening. So why tease your fans, instead of just keeping quiet?

Or their conference is going to start with some statements that flat-out state they're not going down the route Microsoft is. Drop that bomb, and then drop some exclusive game bombs.

Monday, monday, monday!

Actually a bit surprised MS (partially) revealed what they're doing last week. We don't even know the full extent of their shitty plans yet.

It feels kind of cool to be smack at the beginning of a new era in technology. One day our kids and our kid's kids won't know wtf a disc is, and we were there when the first shots were fired. This was always coming, we just didn't know when.

Does it say anything in there about what Publishers can do on their system? Just because Sony says these things are not required doesn't mean games from certain Publishers won't.

Chances are the Ps4 will have Publisher controlled DRM just like the Xbone.. which is the question Sony have been avoiding so far.

Yeah, that's the best way to build anticipation, don't say anything. But I'm not saying that's what they're doing. Obviously the "let MS take the heat" route works either way for them. I do hope they make it absolutely clear that they're going to keep the PS3 style system in place.

All they have to do is say "Nothing changes." Pow. Boom. Megaton in and of itself.

GameFly probably knows what's up and is going to be a partner.

RedBox is a relative blip in the market and will not.

A blip that me and everyone I know uses on an extremely frequent basis. I think RedBox has more pull culturally then people give them credit for. $1 a night movies, $2 a night games? It's amazing.

If I had those deals growing up I would have been in heaven. Instead I got stuck with Holloywood video and Blockbuster both of which were overpriced, assholes about returns, and constantly tried to upsell on shit I didn't need.

edit:
I go to peoples houses I see those redbox discs holders on people tables and next to their TVs. When I was in college you would see those cases everywhere. I don't know, I think until streaming becomes as affordable --amazon instant will charge me 3 to 5 dollars for the same movie -- RedBoX is here to stay. They are everywhere. Gas Stations, convenient stores, grocery stores, fast food restaurants, ect..

To be honest I bet Sony's possible scheme is actually a lot more rental friendly. Neither are inherently bad with it, but Sony's could feasibly have a bit of machinery within Redbox machines to reset the RFID, whereas I'd imagine you need the X1 discs to actively be read in a disc player and connected to the internet. GameFly could easily do both I'd imagine, but the RFID's probably faster.

Microsoft put out shitty news before e3 so it would be drowned out by e3 coverage. They also cancelled all post e3 interviews with execs except for hand picked journalists that will suck their dick and say how great they are. It is a calculated pr move that hopefully won't work. If this console is a success it will be the death of game rentals.

So they may be 66% correct? I don't think it will require internet, but the other two may be right. Since they have never clarified after the off the cuff comments a few month(s) ago I am still skeptical. :/

I see your edit; Yeah regarding used games. They are a "renter" service.

Apparently, the DRM Sony is considering will be offline, more specifically using that RFID on disk tech mentioned months ago.

Gotcha gotcha :)

Good - at the very least everyone needs to understand what rights they're giving up with XB1 (And possibly PS4).

I only rent 1-2 games per year, but I want to have that option nonetheless.

I'm kind of confused by all this anti-consumerism bullshit I'm reading. XBone and PS4 are essentially Steamboxes. I don't read or hear shit about not being able to resale my pc games. Don't buy the machines if you disagree where publishers are going with this. It runs the same course in print, books, newspapers, yellow pages, etc. Times are changing with the digital age. Will Redbox, Gamefly, and any other reseller be pissed? Sure, but the owners of the content are going to do what they want to do. Movies will eventually go through this as well. If I happen to purchase a next gen system, I'll simply wait for games to become cheap enough that I don't have to worry about reselling the game. I'm not standing up for what's happening, I just realize that it's what's happening. I don't have to play games if I disagree with that, I read all these opinions like it's a right or some shit like that. I've built a huge Steam library not spending more then 5-10 bucks per game, I don't see this any different.

Sony wouldn't be silent if they had a DRM bomb to drop. At this point, Sony's diffident silence in the face of the shitstorm around MS strongly implies that not only do they have an ace up their sleeve, they're planning to just murder MS when they get up on stage only a few hours after the MS conference is over. If they had a horrible DRM scheme of their own they would be talking about it while MS is busy taking all this heat, they wouldn't wait until E3 and let it completely dominate E3 coverage of their PS4 unveil. Also, they aren't canceling any interviews and Q&A sessions.

Sony's stance, while hinted not to be as draconian as MS's, is still unclear.

Correct.
May be something, may be non existant.
Trying to see where this bring in an "Uh oh".
We already know for a fact that the PS4 does not require an internet connection, so that in and of itself shows that Redbox do not know their next gen from their own assholes and instead are lumping it all together out of ignorance.

Allegedly Redbox added later that "Fucking Steve Ballmer is a fucking pussy." and that they were going to "Fucking kill Microsoft."

Chairs may or may not have been thrown.
