Eh. Not interested if it's not traditional animation. Or if it doesn't have an awesome 80's soundtrack. That was always the main draw for me.

This is going to be huge in brazil, this anine was very popular here. Licensing issues kept the original series out of netflix here so far, but this is a good payoff.

I am insanely hyped for this. Hope they do the gold knights saga too.

Show is big in several non English speaking countries. It's also interesting to see they're going with the name the show received in most of these, they know their market it seems. Will definitely watch it, please be good!

This show was insanely popular in the 90s in latinamerica. Even toys were popular.

The series has some cool concepts and perhaps too much melodrama. A remake could be good.

it's said in the famitsu apparently, and considering the staff, it was pretty much obvious! I updated the OP with the full cast

I'm confused by the staff. So this is a western production with animation outsourced to Toei? Good lawd that writing staff, awful.

Saint Seiya is definitely bigger than Dragonball in Brazil. This anime made the childhood of whole generation happier. I am hyped.

I've been meaning to watch the original Saint Seiya for a long ass time. But it's a pretty big time commitment.

Isn't this series big in Mexico? I remember being told that by someone once.

The Spanish and Portuguese speaking world are going to eat this the fuck up.

Gonna be wary if it really is Toei Animation handling it though. Outside of Omega's sakuga moments (which even then were limited mostly to the first season) they have not exactly given the franchise the quality treatment for a while. On the other hand, their CG tech isn't actually that bad if properly utilised, though it mostly has been utilised for Precure endings of late.

Edit:

It's big in a lot of places - mostly western continental Europe and much of the Americas south of the US border with Mexico.

I fucking love Saint Seiya. Watched the Hades arc and Lost Canvas recently. I'd love for a season 3 of lost canvas to happen but I'll take this too.

And to add to everyone else saying it: saint seiya was massive in Mexico. Glad to hear it was similar in other Latin countries.

It's Toei, you'll get cheap ass animation, like they did with Saint Seiya Omega, Dragon Ball Super and the Sailor Moon Remake. Sucks this isn't by a better studio like TMS which did The Lost Canvas series.

Lost Canvas was top tier and it's the best we've had since the 12 houses arc in the original.

I'm skeptical with this one, but I really hope it delivers, it could be big.

I wouldn't even know where to start watching.

Same. I've been interested in the series, but there are so many spinoffs/remakes/etc, as well as divisive opinions on what's worth checking out vs what should be avoided.

Doesn't help that there's no real official way to check out the original series: it got that godawful network dub that colored all the blood blue (for "sweat") and there's the ADV dub which I think only got two volumes before getting cancelled.

Holy Shit Saint Seiya fans on Neogaf? They are dozens of us!
This came out of the blue, I though the only Saint Seiya animation being made right now was the Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō. This can't be worse than the Saint Seiya movie from a couple of years ago and Omega right? Right?

There's literally no divisive opinion though.

You watch the original Japanese run, period.

I loved the Latin American dub as a kid. I've been trying to watch it on Crunchyroll but it's kinda hard to get into now. I stopped after Athena gets kidnapped, right after they defeat Ikki.

lol CG. I'm not even against new shows being in CG, but why even bother in this case (I know, money).

They are using the Latin name now?

the first to use the name was the french version, and then the rest simply translated from there! "les chevalier du zodiaque" became " Los caballeros del Zodiaco"

and thus it's mainly know with this name outside japan now

Okay.

But how?

Lost Canvas is near-universally accepted as pretty damn good, and chronologically the earliest in the series, so that's a possible starting point. I personally got in via Omega, divisive thought it may be as a non-canon sequel, and it does have the benefit of the OG cast appearing via cameos. Unfortunately most of them outside of Seiya don't become full forces in the series until season 2, which even as a fan of the series, I do not recommend. Soul of Gold is... serviceable, but is an immediate sequel revolving around characters who are only there because of spoilers from the original series. All should be available on Crunchyroll.

Not much of a legal option for the OG series though, I believe.

Let's all pile up on CG animation while pretending the original Saint Seiya animation was anything but a dumpster fire!

The strong character design, soundtrack, poses and occasional bits of great animation more than made up for it.

Certainly not a dumpster fire.

France ?

Every Latin based country loves this anime!
México here and I can attest to that. That series was insanely popular in the 90s. Only DBZ Was more popular and that didn't happen until 5 or so year after Saint Seiya.

Such a shame that Jesus Barrero, the iconic Latin Spanish voice of Seiya, died recently. He'll be missed.

Holy shit! A new Saint Seiya series exclusively on Netflix? And it's in full CG? This is going to be huge in Latam and Brazil!

Here's hoping that the English dub has some of the ADV dub cast reprise their roles. It's been a long time since I watched the censored KotZ dub on Toonami.

This better have Pegasus Fantasy or RIOT

Fuck yeah it is! An important network tv channel is airing the original series all over again in prime time (7:30-8:30pm) since June.

Why did this show get so big in Europe and Latin America but never in the US?

Except Shingo Araki elevated this to amazeballs levels thanks to his designs, I am convinced that if they would have kept Kurumada's designs this shonen would have tanked right away. Bless Araki, he will be dearly missed.

I can only speak for Brazil, but Saint Seiya was essentially our first contact with anime. There was pretty much nothing quite like it, we also got some other minor series afterwards but no anime was this big until DBZ came along.
