Fans of video game Titanfall may have to wait for up to a year to see the sequel – and a TV series spin-off is in development.

Lead writer Jesse Stern promises Titanfall 2 will portray a world in which science meets magic, but a world which will still be “grounded, dirty, human and real.”

Stern and his colleagues in the creative team at Respawn Entertainment started work on the sequel in late 2014 after spending six months adding content to the first edition. As a then-start-up which only had a couple of computers, Respawn did not have the resources to do both multi-player and single-player versions.

Flush with cash after Titanfall clocked 10 million individual users, the sequel will have a dedicated single player campaign. Distributor Electronic Arts EA -5.43% has not set a release date, indicating only it will be out in fiscal 2017, which runs from April 1 through March 31, 2017. “We’re only a little past a year into it,” he tells Forbes. “It takes two years to make these things usually. Sometime late this year or early next seems like the right neighborhood (for completion).

“The multi-player game will be even better than it was the first time around. The first game was an Xbox exclusive (initially). This one is going to be widely available, I believe on all platforms. One of the shortcomings of the first game was we just did not have the mechanism to tell everyone ‘here’s who you are, here’s where you are and who’s around you.’ We knew all the answers, we just could not deliver it.
“So we are doing our best to deliver a vision of grand global colonial warfare retelling the story of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space. We imagined the next generation of immigrants moving out to the new frontier of an inhabitable planet. Rather than taking a traditional sci-fi approach to that we wanted to look at how that would happen practically, what the ships would look like and with machines that were designed for excavation and construction, demolition and working the land, and what happens when they are turned into instruments of war.

“What inspires us is the junction of technological advancement with the inevitability of conflict and war and what the next war might look like. In Titanfall 2 there will be a lot of [scenes] where science meets magic, but keeping it grounded and dirty and human and real.”
Stern misses the daily buzz of working on episodic TV and is developing a number of projects including a series spin-off of Titanfall with Respawn in partnership with Lionsgate TV. “What I love about TV is the tempo,” he says. “Every day you are collaborating with other writers, working with your cast and crew and your studio and the network. You come up with an idea, you pitch it, you sell it, you shoot it, cut it and edit it and come up with another one.
His ambitions jell with Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella who wants to diversify into scripted and animated TV series. Perhaps the biggest challenge for a Titanfall series is the cost factor. “It would be very expensive,” he says. “We are trying to find a way to tell a story in the worlds we want to be in and produce in the TV model.”

'Titanfall 2': Lead Writer Promises A Grounded, Dirty And Human World

On the Single Player Campaign:

On the TV series:

On being multiplatform:
“The multi-player game will be even better than it was the first time around. The first game was an Xbox exclusive (initially). This one is going to be widely available, I believe on all platforms.

Well, Lionsgate is really into gaming right now, so that part of the rumor makes sense.

I realize that's not been well reported on GAF (feel free to blame me, I wasn't sure how many people would be interested in Lionsgate executive puff pieces), but I did want to note that they are a logical partner for the purposes of evaluating the rumor.

I heard something about that but didn't know they were pushing for TV. That sounds super interesting.

So this game will have a single player campaign that includes elements of science fiction and fantasy. They have my interest now at least.

Oh yes, thank goodness there is going to be a campaign in this one and the premise sounds cool. Multiplayer was fun in the first but I need a campaign to scratch my itch

Well, so far they've been about putting their film properties into Gaming, but this is a pretty logical extension of that, and they've been hinting at grander ambitions overall.

The "all platforms" part is really, really intriguing. Time for that unprecedented partnership to reignite, EA?
I probably wouldn't hold my breath too hard on that one.

I enjoyed the first game but I didn't find anything all that interesting about the world to warrant a TV spinoff. Though maybe the second game will correct that.

Sweet. I really liked a lot about the world of Titanfall, but it was a shame that nothing was there to go into more detail about it.

Really psyched for Titanfall 2. The first one had so much potential.

That whole part about being widely available better mean only current gen consoles. I assume so since EA has dumped last get but still.

Campaign is fine as long as it doesn't take away from a vast multi-player experience with the same amount and quality of maps as the 1st. TV... Meh.

I'm fascinated by it. Not that I matter, but +1 from me if you post anything about it ;).

As for Titanfall....I'm psyched, loved that game.

Hoping it would hit this holiday, but with a new Battlefield I expect it to be out at this time next year. Can't wait to see it though.

They would have to be crazy to hinder it with last gen versions. EA may not always be in touch with what people want, but I think this time they know that people want a current gen game.

If I were to wildly speculate, I'd guess Battlefield for fall and then a Titanfall beta in the holiday, followed by a full release in April.

Just a couple of computers? Sounds like an understatement for that type of game.

Anyways, I'm glad to hear there will be a campaign. That's usually what sells me on shooters. But I enjoyed Titanfall for a while.

If they think they're up to the task of a campaign, I want it to be firing on all cyldiners. Full co-op like Halo, big open areas, nice mix of Titan/vehicle and on-foot gameplay. Easy on the setpieces and cinematic shit, please.

Respawn was a really small outfit compared to most AAA games when they made TF. They're larger and likely have a much bigger budget now, so I'm willing to believe that they can pull off a campaign without the MP suffering.

I don't think the MW campaigns were lacking maps.

More importantly, free maps this time around if we're to go off Zampella's wording.

So Titanfall 2 will have a SP mode :D? Cool, as its gameplay mechanics could make for some really fun missions to complete and some really fun set pieces to go through. While I'm sure it won't distract from the MP portion of the game (Respawn is filled with IW developers and they did a good job balancing SP and MP modes with past Call of Duties), so I'm excited to here that news :).

Hopeful that the game is strong and everyone enjoys it when its officially announced/shown off :).

Titanfall's great. I'm looking forward to more. It was probably the best FPS multiplayer I've played this generation.
