Resident Evil 4 Review thread

They WILL fix it for the XSX, just like they did with RE8 which had a square/box aiming zone (in the demo, final game had this fixed, I actually finished it on the XSX).

What they will not fix IMO is the blurry PS5 IQ since they'll actually have to put some work in it and that's a friggin' bummer (and if they do fix it, it'll probably take some time).

Like many others have already mentioned, there's no excuse for such terrible IQ in 2023, I don't care if it's the reconstruction method they're using or what have you, it's simply and utterly inexcusable...

This is my feeling too. Well said. The iq is bad on Ps5. No excuses compared to series X when Village looked identical on both machines

I'm glad they actually did a good "remix" than just a res/engine bump. Started off with hardcore and enjoying it....just the pesky crashes with max RT is getting to my nerves. So far what I've played...I'm happy with pulling the DAY 1 trigger on it.

Did you think this remake had less cut content than the previous two?

Quite frankly, I didn't think there was anywhere as much removed as 2 and 3. Some parts actually felt expanded. Although that may have just been to compensate for the content that was omitted from the original.

"J.J." the soldier now looked weird. Why did they change him and put a bull mask on him? :D

I just got to the castle and the entire village section had next to nothing cut. The optional troll fight and the cable car section, that's it. Put on the other hand the lake was vastly expanded.

If the castle and the island are the same then this is prolly the best and most true Remake Capcom has evern done.

  • 💭 The first ambush in the Resident Evil 4 remake feels like being in a dream.
  • 🎮 The game is designed to bring back almost every room from the original title, but with a twist.
  • 🎭 The remake feels dreamlike, as if the player is in a place they are familiar with, but things are slightly off or uncanny.
  • 🤔 The video game reviewer questions whether the times where the player feels a smile outweigh the times they don't.
  • 🕹️ The Resident Evil franchise has always been about multiple retellings of the same scenario.
  • 📈 The remake of Resident Evil 2 aimed to recreate a scenario from a game in 1998 with the mechanical language of a game from 2019, creating two distinct experiences.
  • 🔄 In contrast, the remake of Resident Evil 4 aims to update the original rather than creating a wholly new experience that stands alongside it.
  • 🎨 The remake attempts to differentiate itself with a few iterative mechanical twists and a similar game layout that surprises players with subtle alterations and occasionally averts ones too.
  • 🧟‍♂️ The design of the overall map has shifted slightly in RE4 remake, allowing for easier backtracking and side quests.
  • 🎮 The core gameplay is different in RE4 remake; now you can move while aiming and shooting, and enemies are more aggressive, which balances the difficulty level. However, the way the game evokes tension has changed, and it's debatable whether it is as consistently thick.
  • 🦶 Moving and reloading is possible in RE4 remake, which wasn't possible in the original. This makes the gameplay less interesting and difficult as it almost always makes sense to retreat, unlike the original game.
  • 🧐 The argument that as graphics become less abstract, concepts like not being able to move while shooting start to create dissonance between the mechanics and the realistic-looking world is hard to justify when games like RE4 remake still have plenty of concessions that forego realism made for the sake of convenience.
  • 🎮 The new movement in RE4 remake is unique, and it includes on-the-fly weapon switching and the ability to store weapons away and pick them up later at typewriters.
  • 🕵️‍♂️ Stealth is now another tool on the table in RE4 remake, and Leon can creep around and do takedowns.
  • 🎮 The reviewer believes that the Resident Evil 4 Remake graphics and dialogue were updated, but the game still manages to maintain a middle ground between the original game and new audiences.
  • 🎮 Some scenarios from the original game were recontextualized, making them more realistic, but the game is still prone to lampshading the situations with dialogue.
  • 🎮 Some events from the original game were moved around, and Luis' story underwent the biggest update. The reviewer thinks it was calculated, as Luis was a fun character but felt underutilized in the original game. Luis's story was fleshed out, giving him more character and motivations.
  • 🎮 Luis's death was made much more poignant by fleshing out the details in his final moments. Passing on the key to his lab to Leon gave his death more meaning, and his character was given credit for being helpful to Leon and Ashley, who would not have survived the game without his machine.
  • 🎮 The other characters' stories did not get the same upgrade. Leon had a tiny bit more going on, but it was a nice bit of characterization that helped thread the needle from two to four better. Ashley's story remained similar, but she had more dialogue that helped develop her relationship with Leon. Krauser's reasons for betraying Leon were given more texture, but he still came off as ridiculous.

  • [🎶] The video is about the Resident Evil 4 Remake.
  • [💭] The idea of a Resident Evil 2 Remake was considered impossible at one point but its success led to many remakes in the franchise.
  • [🤔] At first, the possibility of remaking Resident Evil 4 was considered ridiculous as it was a massive money maker for Capcom and was the least in need of a remake.
  • [🎮] Unlike previous remakes, Resident Evil 4 Remake was much more faithful to the original.
  • [📺] The story of Resident Evil 4 Remake is considered weaker compared to the rest of the series, but it works well as a standalone title.
  • [🎥] The game's story was meant to be a standalone story inspired by Resident Evil and is the bare minimum necessary to tie into the series.
🎭 Character development: The Remake portrays Luis as a more complex and interesting character, making a tragic mistake by helping Umbrella poison an entire city with a zombie virus, and helping Leon and Ashley as the one good thing he can do after having to help terrible people do terrible things to stay alive. Collectible files allow you to discover more of his backstory. The other characters also feel more complete, less one-note, and more grounded in the Remake.
  • 🎭 Voice acting: The new vocal performances in the Remake are great, delivering well-characterized characters. The original voice acting in RE4 sounded great, but never had any emotional value to the series. The new actor for Ada's voice has moments where she sounds flat, emotionless, and amateurish, unlike the incredible job done by the voice actor for RE2
  • 🗡️ The durability meter for the knife adds a risk-reward system that requires players to be smart about how much and when they engage with it.
  • 🔪 Stealth kills now require players to decide whether to spend meter or ammo to take down enemies, adding forethought to the combat system.
  • 🎮 QuickTime events have been cut back to a satisfying extent, with some players possibly not missing them. This change allows players to focus on cutscenes without failing QTEs.
  • 👧 Ashley no longer has a health bar and can be healed of all injuries by the player character. Her AI has improved, making it harder for players to die because of her.
  • 🧱 Many set pieces and locations have been dropped in the remake, but this does not necessarily affect the game's pacing positively or negatively
  • 💡 The core formula of RE4 was well executed and engaging and the Remake mostly builds off of that foundation instead of radically altering it.
  • 💡 RE4R is a much more accurate remake than the two that preceded it (RE2R and RE3R) as it stays true to the spirit of the original game.
  • 💡 Some content from the original RE4 did not make it into the remake, but the long run time and solid action gameplay make it less bothersome.
  • 💡 RE4R feels so close to the original that the original isn't quite as necessary anymore outside of fun nostalgia.
  • 💡 The first release of RE4 sits at an interesting position since its gameplay was so radically effective that most games of its kind have just been sort of copying it to some degree since then.

🎮 People have a lot of attachment to the way Resident Evil 4 looked and felt
  • 🎮 Capcom went into Resident Evil 4 Remake with the same spirit as they had for Resident Evil 2 Remake
  • 🎮 Remakes have made massive alterations to all characters
  • 🎮 Every character in the game looks great, but one issue is Leon's face, which has a lack of points of articulation in facial animations
  • 🎮 Resident Evil 4 Remake can feel more closed off than the original due to its overall design, with areas that used to allow for free movement now restricting players to a very narrow path
  • 🎮 The game may induce a little claustrophobia, but even if it wasn't intentional, that's the result they ended up with
  • 🎮 Capcom has wonderfully tweakable visual options for Resident Evil 4 Remake
