Seems today is a media dump day for RE7.

Eurogamer 'Played 5 hours, what I think': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGXgI46XSYM

The series is finally done playing catchup to 4. This is the confident re-imagining we should’ve got two sequels ago. All that matters is that it’s here now and it’s terrifying. If the remaining hours are as consistent as the five I got to play, few games in 2017 will come close to touching it, horror or otherwise.
PC Gamer Article: http://www.pcgamer.com/meeting-the-horrifying-baker-family-in-resident-evil-7/

What I’ve played so far has been encouragingly strong, to the point where this could easily stand alone without the Resident Evil name as a great horror game. The fact that it still can with that name attached (and its connotations of a melon-biceped Chris Redfield fighting bone dinosaurs) probably says more. The four or five hours I’ve seen has actually been one of the best things I’ve played this year, riffing the series’ familiar values off the uncertainty of its newer ideas to create something unpredictable and, above all else, interesting.
"Four Hours of RE7 is one of the best things I've played all yeat" from GamesRadar: http://www.gamesradar.com/a-four-hour-demo-of-resident-evil-7-is-one-of-the-best-things-ive-played-this-year/

Resident Evil 7 displays both confidence and humility – a tricky blend to achieve. It hasn’t stubbornly ignored successful trends that have fuelled modern horror games – like the widespread shift to first-person – nor has it simply mind its own reservoir of images and characters to create new terrors. For the first time in years, the series has looked outside of itself and this has resulted in a meaningful evolution of the series. But this isn’t a departure, far from it; this is a homecoming. Resident Evil 7 breaks its recent traditions in order to better serve the original design. Once again, you’re alone in a sprawling gothic house, surrounded by terrible things, and you have to survive. It feels at once both old and new, familiar and unknown, and – for the first time in years – like the most interesting and exciting horror game around.
IGN answering 3 big questions about RE7: http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/11/30/answering-3-important-questions-about-resident-evil-7

Resident Evil VII, based on my time with it, already feels bolder and more confident than recent franchise installments. It feels content to let the level design and atmosphere drive the pacing forward. There were no quick-time events during my demo, and explosions were few and far between.

I can't speak to the quality of the entire game. But as someone who has been waiting for the series to find its way back to its horror roots for years now, I'm excited. It feels as if Capcom might finally remember what made the series great to begin with, and finally knows how to mine that legacy without using it as a crutch.

It might look different on the surface, but everything that made classic Resident Evil so great, for me, is present in Resident Evil 7 - uniquely weird puzzles, a foreboding atmosphere, a memorable locale and genuinely intimidating enemies. It isn't action horror or horror entertainment - it's real, classic survival horror.

Wow, both the video and article are glowing. More likely be popping up so I'll update the OP with them as they come.

The article says this may be one of the best games of the year if RE7 can keep up with the quality of the first few hours they played, and the gameplay video by GamesRadar is glowing. Seems publications were able to play the first 3-5 hours of the game. Capcom claims the game is 15-16 hours long.

After my initial disinterest they've really turned me around with what they are saying/showing.

Not watching anymore videos but the praise is hype inducing. Can't wait!

I guess we'all be getting the next part of the demo during PSX?

Gamesradar can fuck off saying 5 & 6 damaged the brand.

4-6 were all action games. You can't just scratch out 4 because you like it.

4 IMO was a natural evolution. With 5 and 6 they went too over the top IMO. I loved 5 and could let some shit pass. But you could see what it was becoming

They werent tho...

5 was incredible and still my most favorite to this day, 6 is amazing for it's creature design and combat design by itself.
I like both of them too, but there is no denying that most people find them pretty bland and safe, not wanting to take any risks and instead capitalizing on the gun action alone. This is why I think 5 and 6 damaged the brand as a whole, they weren't really doing anything good for the series.

On the other hand I see RE7 exactly the opposite, taking a lot of risks and going forward with the series. I hope the effort gets them good results

this looks scary as hell, I'm not sure I'll be able to beat this game. I never beat any of those modern first person horror game either. P.T is about the only one I managed to beat, and that's with inviting my friends to come over so I don't play the game alone.

And you can play this whole thing in VR.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

5 and 6 damaged the brand so much they became capcom's two best selling games lol.

On topic. I like what I saw in the video. Too bad we couldn't see the other weapons. I really like the look of the mold monsters.

Maybe it has something to do about 4 being an incredible game while 5 and 6 were mediocre to bad games?
4 was revolutionary for the series. 5&6 were safe bland mediocre titles.
4 IMO was a natural evolution. With 5 and 6 they went too over the top IMO. I loved 5 and could let some shit pass. But you could see what it was becoming
4 did damage it depending on what you want out of RE. There are still people who dislike the change and evolution that game brought.

My complaint is that RE5&6 always get a lot of shit for being action games. Even though that is still what RE4 is. I can understand disliking 5&6 but if any title REALLY did damage the brand it was only 6. 5 reviewed and sold well, and is their highest selling game to date.

So even if you dislike the changes, I wouldn't call such an accolade as damaging the brand. Like I said you can argue with 6 more due to the lower review scores.

All in all, even if you like RE4, it was the start of change for the new direction. So it can be held to the same sort of blame of changing the series from its original design.

RE6 may have been a poor RE game, but saying it was "safe" or that it didn't do anything new for the series? If anything, it was too risky for its own good.

Now back on topic, the gameplay looks good.
Aiming with the pistol seems to be ZombiU style which is fine. Best way to balance having First Person and not being a super soldier with a gun.

Man, the last bit on the gamesradar video. How is Ethan still alive after getting three or four hacks from a fire axe?

Some of this b-roll looks incredible even though it's on youtube. I wonder if it's just the VR-ish camerawork that is making it appear more photo-real to me.

Combat still looks suspect, but it looks like an interesting place to explore, and I'm really glad to hear it's not too much like Amnesia.

I say mostly 6 damaged the brand, that one was a mess of epic proportions, and not even trying to emulate 4, just a weird game without vision.

Not sure whether to drop for the RE7 CE at GameStop, or use the money and put towards a PSVR. Huge Resident Evil fan and have been a big champion of this game ever since the beginning. Screw the haters!
