Resident Evil Community |OT2| Best Fans Ever!

Does his best thinking in the flying car
The Resident Evil Community thread |OT| has fizzled out, despite a strong OP by cvxfreak. These things happen. Jawmuncher contacted me two weeks ago about starting a new one. The new thread could benefit form being on the main Gaming forum for a month, picking up new subs before moving into Community. Jawmuncher discussed this concept with moderator(s), and here we are now.

d31de2e9f9a82f18970198268636a5a3.png

Why? People like talking about RE on neoGAF, even if they've stopped doing so in the community OT. Let's look at some recent conversations:

Ranking the Resident Evil games by Lightning Count
Resident Evil 5 is so good by Neiteio
Resident Evil 0 |OT| by me
Resident Evil 6 rated for PS4 and Xbox One in Korea by Jawmuncher
Europe: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition coming out on Oct. 29 on Wii U
SoulsBourne is a modern interpretation of old school Resident Evil by Dance Inferno
Resident Evil 5 (PS3) - co-op partner wanted. by Lightning Count
RTTP - Resident Evil 2: Surviving the Horror by ScOULaris

Lets Talk Resident Evil Revelations 2 vs other modern RE by ksdixon
Are there any games with better pacing than Resident Evil Remake? by Crimsonclaw111
RTTP - Resident Evil 2 by Lightning Count
Why is Resident Evil Code Veronica so underrated? by The Last One
Playing RE HD last night, tank controls finally clicked for me by Neiteio

Those are just the threads that have had activity in 2016. I excluded a few, like the RE0 announcement thread, just because they started a long time ago & were ultimately replaced by the OT.

So why not take another shot at a RE community OT on GAF?

Deporting oneself badly
Don't be a jerk. Absolutely provide insight into your opinions, but "lol [RE6/CVX/RE4/whatever] is utter shit and its [success/failure] just goes to show how [pedestrian/stupid/unskilled/butthurt/whatever] the [old fans/new fans/critics/casual gamers/santa claus/whatever] are. This fucking fanbase is the absolute worst" is just the same old shit we've been reading for years. Have an actual point. Don't just drive-by gameshit.

Yeah, just as an awareness thing, the intent of the thread is to foster community among RE fans of all stripes.

In creating this thread, I didn't envision a "correct" type of fan, nor did I consider a minimum experience requirement for declaring oneself a fan. I'll update the OP to reflect this, but I consider policing/questioning somebody's "RE Cred" an off-topic/disruptive sort of thing & really would rather not have it here.

550w_gamingreview_re5gold_2.jpg

I will happily modify the OP when I see good suggestions for other recommended topics. The OP very much belongs to the community, and as memorable quotes/ideas/gifs arise, I will try to reflect that in the OP. Apologies to Jawmuncher (& mods with whom Jm discussed this) for the delay. I was working on something a little more elaborate, but it ended up being a parody of discussion on another site (THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED).... so yeah that got scrapped. All that remains of that concept is the title, RIP

Asking the tough questions, though: will we ever see Rebecca play piano again?

EDIT
I have failed this community

Wonderful thread. RE has a great fanbase all over.

GamingMoe recently interviewed Kenichi Iwao, the man who conceived of the game world for the original Resident Evil. It's an interesting interview, and yours truly was the interpreter. ;)

Meeting Kenichi Iwao was amazing. Just hearing him talk about how he created RE1's characters, enemies, world, etc. was very mind blowing. I wish there could be an opportunity to go back to the series and see what he would do with it.
Actually, it not only helps set up Umbrella's downfall, but gives a full look at just how evil it is. Survivor and Dead Aim are essential to getting the full scope of the story, in my opinion. They both illustrate the company declining. The novel and stage play are great too.

The series has some of the most natural story progression imaginable, honestly.
This isn't new news, but Capcom Cafe (a Capcom-themed cafe in Japan) has been celebrating RE, Been doing a series of chibi little Resident Evil Zero comics, some special series merchandise, and apparently they've been serving these two dishes for the past couple months during the series 20th anniversary:

Because it's great.

Really great.

And also really real.

I'm really hoping we get RE7 announced this year, it's been ages since 6. Rev 2 was a great step in the right direction, and I'm hopeful that a higher budget and RE6's amazing mechanics as a base should result in something special.

Yo! I'm here for this! Is there a PS4 REGAF community? Anyone still playing on RE5 or 6 or any other RE on PS3 or PS4? Add me: onyxtour I have Mercs 3D and getting a new PC soon too so I can mod some RE5 and 6. I love Mercenaries and the versus/multiplayer though mp on RE6 not so much anymore since everyone just uses Piers but I'm always up for some RE!

Anyways, even though Umbrella Corps is not looking like something I wanted I'm still excited for some new RE, will def get it. Can't wait for RE7 and REmake 2!

Y'all think Julia Voth meant something by this? "#shesback" or this?

Cool. I bought all the classic REs when they were on sale back around Halloween and now I'm pretty much addicted to the series. REmake 2 is possibly my most anticipated game at this point, can't wait to see footage.

Give Ada Wong her own game.

Actually make it an Ada / Fong Ling game.

And make Bruce like shitty Leon in the game

Anyway, I'm in. I love me some RE5. I can't, with good consicence say there's a bad RE game. Every one of them has a redeeming value about it.

Will be sure to add you, really hope they release 4-6 on PS4 proper, I have a new PSN ID so I have to get the plats on 5 and 6 again but I'm waiting on potential remasters, 6 is looking likely anyway.

That's a good idea. I'll add something about finding fellow players for online to the OP

(I can also vouch for ubersticky. He's a good shot)

Yes! Finally! I'm definitely in this! I love my RE, it's pretty much my most favorite series. Let's keep this OT going.

Love anything Resident Evil. I just hope that seven is scary and back to the real roots of survival horror. I also want to see more of Claire Redfield. She was great in Revelations 2!

Lovely!!!! The franchise is very dear to my heart. It's actually the start of my love for survival horror. The series has changed since then (since Resident Evil 4) however I still cherish it for the most part. I'm most looking forward to the Resident Evil 2 remake. I have SUCH high expectations that I don't know if I've set them too high but man whenever I put on Resident Evil or Resident Evil 0 HD I'm reminded of what they can do. It could be a magical thing.

Oh and as if you can't tell, my favorite character is Claire Redfield. Followed by Leon S. Kennedy.

I've played through 2 so many times that I feel like it's the first one I'll be able to complete with no saves and all that for special achievements. I hope we get down information on it soon. Even an image.

Although I mainly play the PC version which still looks amazing.

And a great community to have. Really exited to hear about REMAKE2 , RE7, and whatever else they have in store for the franchise.

Thanks for reviving this. Been hoping to see it active again for a long time.

I hope we see something new soon for the franchise along with REmake 2.

Me and another gaffer put a ton of effort into a Witcher community thread, it was moved to community on the day it was posted and died.
Good to see RE get another chance.
Let's do our best!

I have now finished every mainline game other than 6. I bailed out of 3 twice, but finally finished it. Even though its predecessors are better, it's also not as bad as I remembered (the feeling that it's just ,,Gaiden" kept growing in my memories too). I can't say it's absolutely amazing, but definitely a very fun survival game.

I wish RE: CVX would get a PC release, especially since every other mainline game in the series has been released there at some point. I have the PS3 version but some of the textures could really do with a bit of work!

On a tangent, can anyone advise whether the Chronicles games are notably better on PS3 than on Wii? I have both consoles but would have to pick up a PS Move controller and camera for the PS3 versions.

I really hope that Capcom put Code Veronica (along with RE1-3) on Steam. It'd be nice to have most of the series in one area.

I gave up waiting and got it from PSN last time it was on sale.
Never played Chronicles on Wii but it worked fine on PS3 with Move.

I hope RE7 has Raid. But not Rev2 Raid. Rev1 Raid instead.

And I hope RE6master has Voth-Valentine as a bonus.

I'm also buying that absurd Umbrella shooter, but I'd like proper RE announcements soon. Getting impatient over here.

Fun fact, if you search that guy's name on either google or wikipedia you immediately get to the site of Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has produced the series until 4. I got really hopeful until I found that the guy introducing the remake has actually only produced RE6. Caution way up again for the remake.

I played through REmake/RE2/RE3 in a row last year. Just reminds me those games certainly have unique stances and takes on what makes RE work.

REmake is about the uncertain. You don't know if the next threat is right around the corner, and suddenly a quiet hallway isn't so safe.
RE2 is about overwhelming fear. Zombies are all over the place, and you're not just dealing with 2-3 at a time. They come in packs.
RE3 is about survival. There's a giant genetic freak with a rocket launcher after you. He is always watching.

No Resident Evil is exactly the same scenario. And that's what made going through each one different and fulfilling.

I also highly recommend Revelations 2. You like old style movie cheese? RE1's hokey acting and dialogue? Then you're right at home with this game. And it helps that it brought back my favorite RE girl, Claire, for one more ride of terror.

Glad to see the community back up, hopefully this time it'll get a following that sticks to it. Especially as was posted how big RE threads get on GAF main page.

Really hope the anniversary celebration this year goes all out. I want to be swimming in RE related things all year long.

The RE4 HD texture mod is going to be amazing, and it's almost done.

Also, Carlos is the best one-off character. A hero working for Umbrella? He was Finn before Finn. Despite the RE3 segment of Umbrella Chronicles being the worst and most inaccurate adaptation of its respective game, it did Carlos a lot of justice and boosted him to main character status, which was awesome.

I still need to play 6.
6 will either move Ada forward a notch, or back... depending on your reaction. Personally I love RE6 Ada, she has a very "oh how quaint" attitude as the world burns around her, and her noir-like narration/VO was a great change of pace from the other characters' campaigns.

There are folks who advocate breaking the game up and playing the chronological segements of the campaigns, jumping around... I could not disagree more. RE6 has very very neat narrative mechanic that gets utterly lost doing that. The characters do not view the same circumstances the same way. As the player, you know what they know. You start as Leon and you perceive the events from his perspective. His goals, his direct experiences, his antagonist. But each campaign plays on that perspective by challenging it with new information and experiences you've had with another character. Three times they add information and change the context of the "crossroads" events... when the campaigns collide. And it all culminates with Ada. Too cool for school, she's the only one playing the meta game.

I mean if you automatically roll your eyes at the RE "story" then maybe this does nothing for you, and Ada is just someone talking too much. But I enjoy the story and thought this mechanism of layered and intersecting narrative was reallly clever. And that Ada was a great pay off.

I shed a tear every time someone on gaf recommends chronological playthrough (as a first time) they missed the whole point! Really unappreciated aspect of RE6.

It still blows my mind how good Revelations 2 turned out to be.
If you're a RE fan and still haven't checked it out get to it right now.

After reading the OT, it spurred the question: what was my first RE experience? To think back on it, my first RE experience is one of my favorite video gaming memories. It was the mid nineties, and my brother and I would constantly visit comic book shops to check out if they had any new Aliens comics. One day we came in and there was a demo kiosk for the Sega Saturn and a few guys were around playing it. I could see that they had just started the game Resident Evil, and I sat down to check it out. I had seen screen shots in EGM, and from the screen shots and I could not comprehend how the game actually played. I was super curious to see the game in action.

The guy playing chose Jill Valentine, and as soon as he started playing, I remember thinking it was the most cinematic game I'd ever seen. I couldn't believe how crazy this game was! The character had a pistol with only a few rounds, and the person playing burned through these rounds rather quickly, trying to dispatch zombies around the mansion. It was super interesting to watch this dude playing get super frustrated and eventually die. I remember thinking that this game is totally different than any other I had seen before. Every decision you made had to be deliberate as it was painfully permanent. You could always reload saves, but as for a single play through, ever action made had to be strategic. I remember watching the Jill run through the mansion, with doors being locked. In my head, I tried to remember all of the doors and which key corresponded with which door. I was excited to get my hands on the game and play it myself. While the dialogue was hammy, the plot was incredibly intriguing. Pharmaceutical corporation working on weaponized virus in a remote installation, all hell breaks loose and you have to investigate. Holy shit. Fucking terrifying. Back then, and even now, I have to say that I feel it's the best explanation for "zombies" in media.

I think RE might have been the first thing in media to remind me of (the greatest film of all time) Aliens. There is this incredible tension as the characters don't have enough resources to bulldoze through the adversity, the characters needed to be aware of their resources, and utterly survive. To me, this changed video games.
