The Good: A faithful translation of Capcom's original survival horror classic; features two playable characters plus two distinctly different single-player modes; some excellent sound and music, plus voice acting that's so bad it's funny; creative minigames make use of the touch screen and microphone.

The Bad: Visuals look grainy and washed out; controls are clunky and can take getting used to; cheesy video and dialogue don't really fit with the game's serious theme.

You know a game's a classic when you can play it years later and still have a great time. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is surprisingly successful at translating the scary bits of the original to a much smaller format, and the end result has a lot to offer Resident Evil fans as well as those who've always wondered what the fuss is about. You wouldn't expect a portable game to be able to scare you, especially since this version's visuals simply aren't on par with the cutting-edge graphics Resident Evil is known for. But Resident Evil DS packs in a lot of gory, atmospheric moments. It's pretty wild that now you can play a game like this on the go.

:lol I bet Kasavin hates Manos the Hand of Fate because the MST3K commentary ruins the movie's serious tone.

Just wanted to show my approval of the MST3K reference. Bravo!

I don't think I understand why this is so funny.

Because that IS the game. If that's a complaint, the original RE should have gotten the same one.

Resident Evil has ALWAYS had cheesy voice acting and story.

As far as the FMV intro, the FANS wanted that there and Capcom put it there because it's celebrating the ORIGINAL game the way it was when it was released.

But RE is not a "serious" game. And on another note, I'll never understand people in reviews for this that say stuff like "it's not as scary in portable form" or whatever.

.. Were people ever actually scared by any RE. Tense in the first one, maybe. But scared?

RE:DS was made for fans in mind, Kasavin wrote the review primarily to someone who hasn't played the game before. I fail to see the problem here.

People did complain about the cheesy dialogue in the first one. From the Gamespot review:

the (thankfully) isolated cinematic sequences showing the interactions of the S.T.A.R.S. team members. These scenes are filled to the vomit-line with some of the most hokey, badly-translated, drama-killing, god-awful voice acting ever burned onto a disc. Oh well.

Just because it sucked then doesn't mean that every potential RE: DS owner is aware of how shitty the cinematic portions are. Seems like a valid "Bad" to me. Personally, I was scared by the first game (and appropriately offended by the voice work), but I'd never really played anything like it at the time.

Has Kasavin given up on coming back here to post and defend himself in threads about games he reviews?

Haven't seen his cheery self lately.

I wouldn't blame him if he has. Too many GAF-ers don't seem to understand that reviews aren't written just for them.

Doesn't explain why 1UP gets a pass here.
