The last time I ever screamed while playing a video game was in 2013 when I played through Outlast, and I thought that I've grown enough hair on my chest since then to not be affected by mere horror video games anymore. And yet, here we are, 10 years down the line and I'm screaming my head off like some shithead YouTube let's player when this thing pops out at me out of the darkness and proceeds to swallow me whole:

I do hop at jump scares playing a horror game flat, but I wouldn't say I'm scared. That's a physiological reaction.

But in vr, it's completely different. Geez I'm going down these little alleys and it's quiet, there's light, I have good vision, I'm safe. I'M STILL SCARED.

The feeling in my bones is reminiscent of real life situations that you want to avoid at all costs. Like, it brings up the feeling of those experiences in your life because it's so real (compared to playing on a panel) and somehow I get actually scared.

I suppose you have to be the type who will let your imagination run away a little bit, especially if you're not a noob and you're used to VR. You'd have to be a real stick in the mud not to be feeling this one, though.

You have my full respect. I didn’t get past the first building you enter in the game following the intro. It was pitch black in there and there were too many scary noises. Nope.
I regret being a soft arse because it genuinely does look awesome.
Edit: Even holding the baby in the intro freaked me out.

Completely agree. I was astonished to realize that even if rationally I knew I was not in danger, the combination of realistic perception of darkness and light, and the correct perception os 3D sound tricked my brain anyway making me fear an attack from somewhere. That brief walk in the forest after the ambulance at the beginning was already heavy.
That and playing with maracas in Horizon made me realize how extraordinary is 3D audio when done right. I advice eveyone to be sure to set 3D audio right for your ears from PS5 dashboard (you should hear the watery sound at the height of your ears, not lower, not higher): it makes one hell of a difference even with the in-ear earphones (which punch surprisingly quite good, if you wear them well inside ear).

I played through all of RE 7 in VR, and have played pretty much all the decent horror based games. None of them have really bothered me.

I played that bit tonight. Absolutely awesome in its creepiness. I’m loving re8 so much. I think I’m going to start it again as soon as I’ve finished it. God I hope re4 can match up to it.

It took me like 3 tries to make it through that part (the first building with the old guy with the gun), and the baby did creep me out too, mainly because I was worried the game was going to do something horrible to her infront of me or in my hands, and I really didn't want that to be my first memory with VR.

But yeah, if you hype yourself up a little and go back in a few more times, and get past that first building and kill a few of the lycan, then you can really make it quite further without much trouble. The castle stuff isn't as scary for the most part, and looks so great. If you have to just watch a youtube let's play of that section with the first house (I found one by Christopher Odd or someone which was pretty good), you'll see what's going to happen and that should be enough to help with the fears and get past it - also set the volume to a medium-ish level, too high and obviously jump scares, and I feel too low and then you can't tell what's coming either. But don't give up! It's so much fun to be had if you keep at it.

Only issue is RE4 is more the Rambo of the REs, I would not go in expecting it to match the creepiness one bit. It's action through and through. You get ammo counts in your suitcase numbering in the 1000s by game's end.

I’m going to have to man up at some point soon. Ironically, I’m really looking forward to Saints and Sinners 1&2, but only because they don’t come across as realistic as RE:V. Only time will tell on that one though haha.

Hmm, I'll probably strongly disagree when I play to this point, haha. I do find the ability to simply be killed to ruin the scare more - at least from what I experience. Once I get killed by the lycans and other things in RE8 I just pop back in and then it's not scary like before.

But from what I understand this section is similar - you can get killed/eaten by this thing. And for me the scare comes from the build-up mostly. And all the baby sounds and darkness and seeing this thing in VR probably will give me nightmares I imagine.

Village is absolutely terrifying in VR. I finished the flat version, thinking it wasnt scary at all except the part you mention, but in VR even the first village section was incredibly intense.

Oh and the cutscene where you meet all the vilains at the beginning was jaw dropping, as seeing Lady Dimitrescu in her full glory.

Exceptional experience.

Have you played it? It's not vomit inducing at all - well I guess the cutscenes can be awkward at times, but they account for like less than 1% of the gametime, and are able to be set to be viewed flat if you can't deal with the angles used.

Eye tracking doesn't do much I don't think, but if you're new to VR you probably can't handle free movement and no vignetting off the bat. I had to take quite a few sessions to get my VR legs up to that point, but it's such a fun game in VR I enjoyed them all regardless.

Well you've mentioned you get extreme motion sickness so VR is going to be overhyped dealing with that. It isn't for you. But it's incredible when you don't deal with that.

I'm not really sure what you mean by limiting.

However RE4 on the Quest 2 is often described as incredible - so I imagine if that didn't impress you, perhaps RE8 would be a tough sell. But it's the console experience, but larger than life, and thus scarier as well.

By warping do you mean the snap turning? Maybe you should try and look at a video - the game is essentially identical to the console version but in VR and with the +/- that go along (mostly +):


I found that one to be a pretty good watch prior to trying it myself in VR. It's the first 30 minutes or so, and he's a big horror fan and has played the flat version so he knows what he's doing in the game and goes on to explain the differences a bit as well.

I can't imagine how scary the game would be for first-timers in VR. Truly envious of those folk.

But for someone who played through Village a dozen times already, the Beneviento house just feels like busywork in subsequent playthroughs, even in VR. Playing in VR made me realize there was an umbilical cord on the floor, though... never noticed it in 2D.

Bought RE: Village on sale last week.

What a game. Most fun I've had in a long time. On 4th play through now.

The mannequin part of the DLC is the stuff of nightmares.

Yup anything with a cockpit. In the last 2 years, pretty much any fps for me that isn't super fast paced is superior in VR too. Real time strategy is surprising good too.
