How come it took 5 pages to post this gem?
GAF (almost) disappoints for once!

I'm looking at my copy right now. The logo is in a raised reflective foil, and it is cut to be narrower at the bottom like that.

Never seen this before. What kind of game is it?

The Saturn and Playstation boxart for Macross: DYRL. This side scroller was ahead of its time folks, ahead of its time. And the movie is in my anime top 5.

Another awesome Amiga boxart - I'd love a poster sized version of this - but so far my search has been in vain. If anyone has the original I'd love a huge-assed scan of this.

Old PC, JP Mega Drive, Super Famicom, Sega Saturn and some PS1 covers are the best. Since the PS2 era and on ward, I've rarely been impressed with cover art. =/

So many great covers in this thread. I remember seeing so many of them, even if I never actually played the game.

My contribution:

One of my all-time favorite series:

You'll always be Hero's Quest to me!

Wow so many replies with N64 is pushing me one inch closer to a mid life crisis...

Here's an entry from my own personal collection:

http://twitpic.com/41sx07 (it's Vanguard for Atari 2600)
VANGUARD!!!! That was my favorite Atari game as a kid! And the first video game I ever beat (well, it simply started over again, but I still counted it as a victory). Oh man, the memories. I think I feel a tear coming on...

What is 'retro' considered anyway? Older than today? It's weird seeing stuff that's only 1 or 2 generations old, but I suppose that's considered retro to some.

Id really like to hear the story behind this cover. What does this old dood have to do with the game? :P

There actually was an interview I read before with the guys that did the box art for Phalanx. I forget if I saw it on the net or an old EGM, or both, but anyway the gist of it is that they just wanted it to stand out. They knew they were releasing another standard shooter in the sea of SNES shooters, so they thought by doing a cover like that would make the game stand out. Well it worked, though I don't know if it worked in their favor.

I personally think it's brilliant, and ballsy as hell.

It's funny how in so many cases, old school box arts either tried to paint a picture of what gamer's should be imagining in their heads with legitimately good art. It's sad how half assed most modern boxes are, opting for dull 3D renders of the starring character.

I find it funny how this is a boxart about Raphael and its 3 clones using the weapons of the other turtles.

Might as well post something for the thread.

I have always wanted to know who the artist is who painted the covers for Contra 3, Super Castlevania 4, and TMNT: Turtles in Time. It's obvious that the same person did all 3, and damn, he/she is an awesome artist. If I was rich, I would track down this person and hire him/her to paint videogame-based murals all over my house.

So...does anyone know who it is?

That's actually their original colors, after they were just black & white, in the comics that started it all.

It was the cartoon I think that (wisely) decided to color-code the Turtles' eyemasks.
