As a jaded former fansubber... the subtitle timing is pissing me off.

But I am glad to see someone is bringing this over!

I think it's a good sign when the only complaint you can find is the subtitle timing being a little off. The dubbing isn't that bad and not annoying as I feared

I guess I have low standards, it's okay to me but I wish they would translate on screen text too.

If it's not loading, are you outside of US? It's North America only I believe.

i'm too used to the JPN announcer but i'm sure i'll get used to it. kinda wish the US announcer would calm down a lil. XD

Not the biggest fan of the announcer, particularly whenever he said "Ryu" :p

Still, a lot of fun to watch, especially when he gets to the "end" and you know the episode isn't even half over.

Aww, some of the writing is pretty weak. They need an editor
and someone to wipe out the lines where Arino grunts and there's like 20 words

Nice to finally get to watch this episode again, however...they cut out all the non-gaming stuff, heck they even cut out most of the introduction of the show. Didn't like how they pretty much covered up all the music by jacking up the volume on the English Announcer (who btw, should learn how to pronounce Japanese names... Arino =/= Arena with an o ; Abe=/=Abe Lincoln; and Ryu=/= Rai U) Otherwise, I'm glad that this show is being aired in some form in the states. I've seen the first 7 or so seasons and I'm still gonna watch them in this manner. I do commend Kotaku for licensing this at all, and none of these issues will keep me from watching. I'm glad they kept Arino subbed, even if the subs aren't entirely great. You can tell this was kind of done by a low budget company because they couldn't even be bothered to translate the on screen text.

I'm just glad someone decided to bring the show over. Kinda sucks that it's just his gameplay runthrough and nothing else, but eh I enjoyed it. I was expecting worse to be honest...like 100% total dubbing

Also, on Kotaku's site:

Update: There seems to be a geotagging issue that is preventing people in Canada and Mexico from watching the show. We are looking into this and hope to have it resolved by Friday. Sorry.

they're the best parts so i understand. altho i do hope they consider subbing the arcade trips cuz they're awesome and very educational.

Hopefully this first set of episodes does well enough do get another "season" and they can include all the extra bits.

This version of it is absolute shit. The announcer is terrible and all the extra fun stuff is missing, what is the point? Like I guess it could be worse but why not just do it right?

Mod stance on rehosting these? I'd be happy to throw up the flv/mp4 reencode to hosting sites

I'd be happy to do this too, I've got tonight's episode already ripped, it's about 300 MB in size but I'm sure the converted size would be a bit lower. I can throw them up on my Mediafire account if people would like..it'll take a little time to convert and upload though but I'd be happy to help out too. Either Jediyoshi or I can do it doesn't matter. But wanted to offer to help out anyway since I plan to rip the other 11 episodes of this first "season" for the US.

It is pretty half-assed :/

I'm struggling to think of a worse way they could have presented the show, but at least more people get to experience it.
Arino could have been dubbed, that would have almost certainly be worse. To be fair to the US version, it makes sense that those of us who have seen the JP version would think this is not as good but I will be watching every single one in hopes that they will take the audience input for the next set of episodes. There are a TON of episodes I would love to see get an english sub of and this is probably the one shot we will get to make it happen.

I guess that's true, but what we've been given is still terrible. The announcer is just so much louder than everything else, and the script is just totally awful. It sounds like an extremely literal translation, and, coupled with his poor delivery, it's unbearable. The idea of a dubbed announcer is great, as Iron Chef clearly demonstrates, but the execution here is just so, so bad. Also, the subtitles are late and have no consistency in where they appear, text is untranslated, and segments of the show are completely missing. The only redeeming thing here is that it's available in English, but I fear that the existence of this garbage official version will discourage competent fansubbers.

jediyoshi/bh7812, do it for me.

No problem, I'll start the conversion/uploading process. It will likely take a few hours though so if Jediyoshi is already doing it it's all good :) I'll post up a link to the download once it's uploaded!

Agreed with everything you said, and if they don't get this straightened out by a potential second season I will absolutely be unhappy about it. Who knows though, maybe the faults of this version will inspire a new crowd of fansubbers to take on the task of subbing GCCX again.

I've heard about this show but never really sought out to watch it

I missed out. That was alot of fun

Roughly half the program being devoted to the last boss is exactly right

Count me in on the hatewagon as well. There's something grating about the announcer's voice, and the subtitle timing bugs me as well. The omission of the developer interviews and gamecenter visits sucks too.

I guess I'll stick to watching the episodes in Japanese for now.

This fits perfectly with my third playthrough of Retro Game Challenge on DS.
Awesome game and finally I get to see the show which it was based on. Awesome :)

A thanks in advance to those that are ripping/uploading the show, I always get screwed over since I technically live in the US (Puerto Rico), but these kinds of licensing deals always end up meaning continental US/north america.

A race it shall be! Unfortunately I have the advantage of not having a life [;

Here are mirrors to Episode 1 in mp4.
http://www.multiupload.com/49XQX7EL79

I was about to youtube it but I noticed they do copyright claim them. I felt morally alright with it as Kotaku hosted those VC fansubs

I mean, it's nice that they got it translated and the like...but they cut out the other segments? why not translate the rest of the images, too?

There could be a lot more to it, that's for sure!

I wouldn't have thought I would like as much as I did, but I look forward to the next episode.

Though I do wish they had kept more than just the gameplay stuff, who's Arino why do we care? I feel like I missed a lot.

Also I can't be the only one that kept on thinking "Use the boomerang star!" on the last boss.

I'd love to see him do Ninja Gaiden 2, that was even harder than 1 but I managed to finish it. Now Ninja Gaiden 3, I REALLY love to see. I never made it past the 3rd stage.

That and battletoads.

Yeah the out of order thing is the worst decision considering this episode references past episodes.

Apparently they're doing the episodes that have been released on DVD...which are seemingly random episodes because the show hasn't been collected into proper seasons.

Converting and uploading are all done so I'll throw up the link to where I uploaded it too..it's all good JediYoshi, this way there's two different mirrors for people to choose from :)

www.mediafire.com/bh7812

It's in the Retro Game Challenge Episodes folder, which is where I'll upload them to every week. It's a mp4, 50 MB. The quality of the mp4 is so so was just trying to help get it out as quick as I could. Mediafire is VERY lenient so I doubt they will pull it. I have a ton of other stuff on my account that has been there for a while and hasn't been pulled.

Enjoy!

Really liked that.
Gave me a lot of laughs, especially when Tojima decided to block the sun.
Never got beyond stage 4 myself, so seeing all the final forms of the boss after those grueling sessions must've been tough.

I liked the announcer personally.
The blunt delivery really served to make it funnier.
Though I don't like that they stuck with "kachou".

They should have just started from the beginning of the series. I don't like this jumping around picking and choosing garbage :[

Oh, and the dubbed narrator sucks.

Absolutely love this TV show! It's right up there with Iron Chef, MST3k and Mythbusters for me. I appreciate that kotaku is putting this out there, but man where does one start with the problems the gawker/kotaku version is already having?

The Good: Arino and his ADs are subtitled. I'm glad that, since they appear to be cutting the fun non-challenge segments, they are using the extended versions of the challenges found on the Japanese DVDs. They did a good job with the title card.

The Bad: No opening, no king/dark king/queen/etc segments (some of my favorite bits). They don't subtitle much if any of the onscreen text.

The Ugly: The announcer mispronouncing and straight up whitewashing some of the character's names (the Abe Lincoln bit was borderline offensive), mix this with the fact that gawker/kotaku didn't even get proper masters of the shows and just overdubbed the narrator over the existing soundtrack shows a total lack of effort.

If my guess is right gawker/kotaku probably won't be taking viewer suggestions in improving the show, so I suppose the silver lining to all of this is maybe more people will get into it and either a licenser who is actually willing to deliver the show the way the audience for it wants it will pick it up, or it will inspire fan subbers to finish more episodes.

*edit*

Wow this video http://vimeo.com/1244534 shows just how much better the "official" version Fuji TV was shopping around was. :(
