Video: Part 1

http://www.retronauts.com/?p=2853

Great video series review by Kim Justice about Final Fantasy VIII's overlooked status and how daring it was as a followup to the biggest game in the series.

Kim Justice said:
"My personal history with the Final Fantasy series is actually quite short, in all honesty — Final Fantasy VII was my introduction (like most) in Christmas 1997, and it quickly became my mostest favouritest game, my default answer to that question for most of the last 20 years. Whenever I get the urge to play a JRPG (which admittedly isn’t often) it’s hard not to go back to the game even though I’ve run through it quite a few times and every beat of the story is written on my heart. I like the game so much that two years ago I did a considerably long video on it. As it goes, I’ve recently had the urge to play a big ol’ RPG again – it’s rare, but it happens…this time I wanted something a bit different. What about FFVII‘s much-maligned sequel, a game that really seems to get a pasting from most people and isn’t even particularly liked by fans of the series? And so, that’s how I’ve ended up starting a multi-part series on Final Fantasy VIII, the first part of which is out today.

FFVIII has a weird position in the series — after the previous game had sold bucketloads and made RPG’s quite the mainstream thing (at least for a while), the expectations and hype for this game were ridiculously high, especially in markets that either hadn’t experienced an RPG hit that big in a long time (the US) or a market that literally hadn’t seen a single Final Fantasy game before on any console ever without importing until FFVII (us poor Europeans). We obviously knew that FFVIII wouldn’t be a direct follow-up or anything like that, although I’m not sure how well it was communicated to us that the game would be very different — which was then pushed further by the game’s highly unorthodox gameplay and design decisions.

The good thing about part 1 is that it features the single greatest frame from the whole game.

Of course, all these little decisions are best explained in the video…it’s funny — I certainly wasn’t intending to make a multi-part series based around Final Fantasy VIII. My experience with the game was brief — I never finished it at the time and couldn’t after it got half-inched (pinched, innit), and so I thought I’d only be good for one vid on this game…that thought quickly changed on playing it, and after a few hours there wasn’t any way that I’d be able to avoid doing a big series on it, as I did with FFVII. Some of the ideas that the game has — the junctioning system, the way it presents its protagonist, the story with seemingly half of the important justifications and expositions hidden away in NPC composition, the card game that’s spread around the world…it’s full of ballsy, ambitious ideas — not all of which come off. But it sure took a chance, and even if there’s parts of the game that falter? It might be worth a bit more love. If you happen to have 70 minutes or so to spare on this Bank Holiday Monday, then maybe you could spend it watching the first video where I start to piece together this strange journey of a game."

Least favorite FF game, so I can't say so personally at all.

Bleach gave me less headaches.

FF8 is one of my least favorite entries in the series. It feels a little worse being sandwiched inbetween some of the best entries in the franchise (6, 7, Tactics, and 9)

corvallis, or
i have tried so many times to like this game, and as someone who really enjoys final fantasy 4,5,6,7,9 and X, i am confident now at the age of 28 that i will never enjoy FF8 for a myriad of reasons

also i honestly dont get why people enjoy triple triad for more than about 15 minutes

its worth noting that FF8 was one of the first final fantasies i ever played and i still didnt like it then, even with the benefit of not having previous series baggage

It's my favourite FF and it's not just nostalgia talking. I recently replayed it start to finish on Vita and it was just as good. I love the junction system and triple triad is rad. You can spend countless hours playing it. The music is top-notch, the whole cast is likeable, the graphics were a huge step up from VII which is crazy because they were almost developed concurrently (iirc). Fantastic game all around and gets a lot of unwarranted hate.

Yeah, the junction system can be over-powered if you abuse it but that goes for any RPG system. And it's not like you can just magically get all the most powerful spells to junction in a snap. You have to do some serious triple triad to refine or the tedious way, draw, draw, and draw some more.

This game literally turned me off of the series that I had been faithful to since 1990.

I even mistakenly skipped over FFIX for about a decade due the bad taste left from that mess of game.

My favourite Final Fantasy and one of my favourite games of all time.

It's a criminally underrated game with some big flaws but the rabid hatred it gets is completely undeserved.

Was waiting until IX fans had to make yet another thread about IX

This.

Playing it now for the first time and it's alright, nothing special. To be quite honest I'm a bit bored of it.

Still the GOAT. Just fix the goddamn Junction/Draw system. Really baffling coming off of the amazing Materia system, that they'd do that mess

Whats wrong with the junction system? For the life if me I cant grasp why its so hated. I had tons of gun with it and it made fight progression through out the gane better for me. Just cast aura on Quistis and hello let Squall and Irvine do the talking.

Very good game. The junction in system could get out of hand depending on your play style. Otherwise this game was top tier. Best card game. Best fur collar.

The greatest Final Fantasy. Absolutely gorgeous artwork, music and an amazingly developed set of leads(fully acknowledge the rest aren't as developed) surrounded by a beautiful lively world. The games battle system has its flaws but the exploration and options available in this game is astoundingly huge compared to games now.

Jesus, if I don't intently listen to him, he can go several paragraphs and I forgot everything he said.

His accent is bad for me. I think its a combination of British/soft spoken.

Arguably the best FF OST of all time. Story is a bit iffy towards the end, but characters are solid, and the world building was awesome.

Remember putting close to 100 hours in this game. Loved triple triad.

Re-appraisal for what? Aside from "Eyes on Me", it was terrible then and it'll still be terrible now.

Funny, FFVII was also my first entry in the series and I did love it at the time, but FFVIII blew it away for me from the moment "Fithos Lusec Wecos Venosec" played. It's the focus on the characters that really did it. It was less about the fate of the world and more the fate of the characters. This is perfectly reflected in its muuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better ending (essentially a gorgeous silent film which still holds up nearly 20 years later). The jump in quality between VII and VIII still astounds me. It's my personal favourite PS1 FF.

Even though it can be gamebreaking, I fucking loved the Draw system. It made me want to engage in battles to grab those magics.

One of the main reasons I hold that game in high regard.

The leveling system working against you as the game progressed was a huge bonehead move and deserves major derision the same way FF2's stat system was utter shit.

But to 8's credit, it was a coherent and memorable story, unlike the most recent entry.

I rather like Squall as a Protagonist. I think he's the best part of the game frankly aside for Triple Triad and the gorgeous backgrounds. But everything else about the game is such a mess.

I'll check out the video when I have time, but from my own experience, no. I tried giving it reappraisals multiple times and couldn't finish it on any of them. Still my second least favorite entry, despite some of the good ideas it has.

Was waiting until IX fans had to make yet another thread about IX

Feels like that's been more the case with VIII lately to be honest. Although maybe that was just the arguments in the thread about which game to remaster next.

I know people dislike this method but the reasoning was for people that loathe random battles it gave them the opportunity to not be punished for avoiding battles.

Holy shit that could've been made by me( and probably many others) I did exactly that after 7 and never completed 8 either.

Will watch this tomorrow.

Its my 2nd favorite ff game. Amazing game imho.

Mine too, and just a masterpiece in its own right. I love its world and how full of personality it is. Places like Balamb Town, Timber and Fisherman's Horizon are locations you don't ever forget.

Plus, very few games out there can match the same sense of grand adventure that VIII did from start to finish. It feels ten times bigger than XV does.

I've constantly gone back and forth on it almost every year since release. I loved it when it came out, started to sour on it by the time the Summer of Square really kicked into gear, appreciated it again a few years later, soured on it again, and so on.

After going back to it last year for the first time in a few years, I think I've just settled on it being okay. It has a wonderful first disc (with the Dollet Mission being one of my favorite parts of a Final Fantasy that isn't 9), an almost as wonderful (though insanely kookier) second disc, but then drops off pretty quickly for the back half of the game. I love everything about the idea of the game's mechanics, but often so much of it never quite comes together, and it's just as easy to break the game against you as it is to break it for you.

In a lot of ways, it reminds me a lot of FF2. Something with a ton of great ideas and attempted to do a lot of neat things to shake things up, but never quite pulls it together. That said, I absolutely have a soft spot for that game, just as I have a soft spot for FF8 a lot more than I'd have been willing to admit most of these years.

The game, though one of my favorite games of all time, has always felt unfinished. Like its ambitions were too high, and there's so much of it's world and story missing.

In retrospect, its menus and systems are pretty obtuse, but it's story, music, and retrograde futurism aesthetic are still charming today.

I had my gf, who's new to games, play it last year and she enjoyed it.

She kept getting confused about junction if and transferring magic though

I don't know a single person who wouldn't take 9 before 8.

*raises hand*

Final Fantasy VIII has one of the best Spanish localizations ever made, which is probably one of the reasons I liked it as much as I did. It's also visually stunning and has a fantastic soundtrack.

I'd kill for a 1080p remaster with re-done backgrounds and models (maybe even a less broken battle system?).
