The first-person shooter genre is easily one of the most popular ones in all of gaming and has stood the test of time over the course of multiple decades at this point. With so many developers providing so many different takes on this formula, fans now have multiple sub-genres to choose from - arena shooters, military shooters, horror shooters, and of course, survival shooters. The latter of these sub-genres is mostly dominated by PC-centric franchises such as the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. among others.

Of course, there's also a budding indie scene that has given us games like DayZ, Escape from Tarkov and others. In this feature series, we are highlighting many such promising experiences spanning multiple genres. Today, we will be looking at Road To Vostok. It's a pretty ambitious game that while not the most groundbreaking in its themes and ideas, boasts some interesting background research and features in-depth survival mechanics that might end up being appealing to many players.

  • 🧑‍💻 The developer received positive feedback on the first demo and used it to identify three main areas for improvement: shooting, loading, and AI.
  • 🔫 The shooting mechanics were improved by making the weapons more dynamic, adding new FPS arms with inverse kinematics, introducing an attachment system, reworking the weapon audio, and adjusting the recoil system for a more realistic and fun experience.

Road to Warstock: Progress Update and Public Demo 1 Version 2

The Road to Warstock is an upcoming first-person shooter video game, and the purpose of this update is to provide an overview of the progress made so far, including the release of Public Demo 1 Version 2. The game's developer had previously released Public Demo 1 six months ago, and it was met with positive feedback, with over 300,000 players trying out the game.

The feedback received from the players helped identify three main core mechanics that needed significant improvements: shooting, loading, and AI. While the AI is still a work in progress, the developer has focused on shooting and loading for Public Demo 1 Version 2.

Shooting Improvements

The shooting experience in Public Demo 1 was lacking, with unrealistic recoil and mediocre audio. The developer has addressed these issues by implementing several improvements to the game's shooting mechanics, including:

  • Modular weapons and new FPS arms that support inverse kinematics for more natural and dynamic weapon handling.
  • A first iteration of the attachment system is now in place.
  • Weapon audio was reworked with over 200 unique weapon audio files added to the game.
  • A new recoil system based on more realistic pivot points and reduced camera shake.

Loading Improvements

The initial inventory system was confusing, slow, and visually unappealing. The developer decided to rework the whole system, resulting in a modern multi-tile inventory system that supports all kinds of useful features such as item transfer, item rotation, item swapping, hover tooltips, and much better item icons. The updated inventory system is now linked to the updated equipment system and character preview, which will play a major role in the upcoming Public Demo 2.

Other New Features

Besides the improvements to core mechanics, there are several new features in Public Demo 1 Version 2, including:

  • Winter options for the game world.
  • Expanded Village map with added water system and indoor areas.
  • Support for left-handed weapon rigs, inverted mouse, and variable optics.
  • Improved terrain and nature shaders.
The Public Demo 1 Version 2 update is available for free on Steam, and the developer is excited to hear feedback from players. While some features, such as swimming and fishing, were deactivated for this demo, the progress made so far is well on schedule towards the next Milestone: Public Demo 2 this fall.

The project's progress has been made possible through Patreon, which provides the developer with the possibility to work full-time on the project and hire possible contractors to key areas of the development. By continuously implementing feedback from the players, the developer hopes to make Road to Warstock an enjoyable and immersive first-person shooter game.
