Awesome - $299 PS3 in April , including HDD, online service better than XBL, and FF7 remake CONFIRMED FACT!
 
The Cell yields shouldn't be much of a problem, because the PS3 is only one of many products getting this chip in 2006. It's going to start showing up in televisions in the second half of the year, and supposedly yields are pretty good. The fact that the PS3 is using a "crippled" Cell will help significantly with yields. My IBM friends are very confident about the Cell chip (of course, they have a HUGE vested interest there). My biggest concern would actually be the RSX - noone seems to know ANYTHING about this chip outside of Sony and Nvidia.

Why do writers like this insist on writing such hollow articles? Go out there and do your job - interview someone. There was a similarly awful PS3 article in this month's Edge.

Sony's not giving them anything so they've got to stab around and find something to talk a bout.
 
It's a good article that makes a good point, and the wide variety and speculation of the various analysts is testament to that fact. Not all of them can be right, and most of them are all working from similar sources.

Sony seems to be able to keep very tight lipped, and lack of hard data can make an analysts job very hard, again, pointing to the validity of Robs point. The less hard data there is, the wider the spectrum of speculation will result because regardless of how much data they have to work with, they are still paid to produce such reports.
 
yeah and if devs and pubs are already biting their nails over when the ps3 will be here and it only hits 2-3 million by end of year then what? what if sony faces the same production problems MS had? MS will have had to have ironed out their problems by now and that should mean speedier production. i honestly think they flat out haulted production for a week or so to clear up that overheating problem because all of a sudden 360 are starting to pop up more and more finally.

ps3 will be getting out the gate with its first gen titles. if MGS4 isnt one of them it may be a struggle. if sony cant keep up with demand it may be a struggle. if its priced higher than everyone expected it may be a struggle. all while MS will be churning out 360s as fast as possible and on their second wave of software. the software that actually isnt leftover trash from last gen. pubs arent gonna wanna sit letting $$$ pass them by especially if they are already crying about how much games are gonna cost them this gen.
 
My problem with it is that it's completely empty. 'Analysts are undecided on the facts.' Well of course they are, they're analysts, who make their money on predicting what's to come - of course their comments aren't going to match. And Sony has NDA'd up all the developers and publishers with dev kits, so there will be NO facts. It's all speculation - and thats something any rational person can say. I don't see why this is such a 'special' comment. I might write an editorial about the sky being blue. Is that groundbreaking?

You could've just said "If everything that's possible goes wrong for Sony and everything goes right for MS, the PS3 might be in trouble".

It's not completely empty at all, it may well be lacking any new information to you as a person who probably follows the entire industry multiple times a day from various news sites and forums, but there are some people out there who probably only read one or two sites once a week or so who may be surprised at the wide variety of speculation being produced by analysts.

Just because an article isn't necessarily aimed at you, doesn't make it "shit" or content free.
 
Rob Fahey is a talentless idiot. He has a grandiose writing style which fools other idiots into thinking he's anything more than a bored and lonely man reading blogs and forums in his bedroom and reprocessing them. The fact that he's been in the job for five years and has never been to E3 or any other non-UK trade event should tell you something about how connected he is.

The fact that someone of such little talent is given such a platform should be a worry to us all.

That sounds like nothing more than professional jealousy to me, why don't you reveal who *you* are and what your connection to videogame journalism is before you attack someone like Rob, so we can judge.

And I'll find it hard to believe that you're not involved, given one of your previous attacks of Eurogamer.

I dont think the point of the article was to highlight the disconcerting disparity among analysts, as much as it was to underline why there is so much disparity for this particular business at this particular time. Considering the stock that is often put into these conclusions and the stakes at hand its certainly seems like a point that deserves to be fleshed out among certain circles, which you may or may not apply. I think Fahey did a fine job of that with this piece, but we'll have to agree to disagree there.

My impression is that the guy is pretty unexperienced...smart but he has absolutely no experience in anything really, quite young too, so my impression is he's like a writer that has some technique but nothing to say. The article has no depth or insight (which is pretty much impossible with experience like that), it's one level above average but still saying nothing.

PS3 will be no more than $400 in North America.

Sony's been hoarding an insane amount of profit of $150 PS2s ... taking an additional $50-$100 hit on the first 1-2 million PS3s isn't going to phase them in the long run.

As mass production gets higher, economies of scale tip more in Sony's favor, since they own a chunk of their own fabs and make some of their own components (ie: Blu-Ray drive).
