Rob & Michele Reiner stabbed to death in home invasion

It always seemed odd to me that you could get black out drunk (note, not PASSED OUT drunk) and still be held accountable for fights, drunk driving, etc, but a woman is suddenly "unable to consent" to sex while the just as drunk guy with her still can.

Such a bizarre exception, really.
It is a mitigating factor.

Jake and Romy Reiner say in a statement obtained by TMZ
"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life."

"We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."

Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder ... he appeared briefly in court Wednesday without entering a plea.

He also faces a special circumstance allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon ... a knife.
Nick is being held on suicide watch at Men's Central Jail in L.A. without bond. The charges could get him the death penalty or life in prison, if convicted

The combination of suddenly losing both of your parents, it turning out they were murdered and that it was your brother who committed it? I just don't know how I could process that. I'm wishing all the best for Jake and Romy after going through that.

And in her case being the one to discover it to add even more trauma. Don't see how you ever overcome that.

How come the murderer was clearly dressed up in Palestine colors?

Seems inevitable that it's them. RIP.

Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, and many others. An excellent director in his heyday.
THe craziest thing is all those bangers you quote were made in a 8 year period.
Such creativity is mindboggling.
It might be the most legendary run of any director ever. The only one coming close could be 1981 to 1993 Spielberg :

1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
1983 Twilight Zone: The Movie
1984 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
1985 The Color Purple
1987 Empire of the Sun
1989 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade / Always
1991 Hook
1993 Jurassic Park / Schindler's List

And you can easily push Spielberg earlier to 1975 with Jaws, followed in 1977 with Close Encounters. Then that little stumble with 1942 but damn that guy was CRUSHING IT for 20 straight years! Longer if you extend to 1998 with Saving Private Ryan. Also gotta throw in the stuff he ghost directed like Poltergeist. Fucking LEGEND.

One of my favorite stories is when DePalma was filming Scarface, specifically the end shootout in the main hall, and Spielberg was just visiting him in Florida, chillin with him, watching him do his thing. Part way through filming the climactic battle, DePalma's like "Yo Steve I need to go grab a sandwich, can you take care of this while I'm out?" and Steve's like "Yeah sure no prob."

So Spielberg ended up being the one that shot either the entire, if not most of that final gunfight. So fucking cool. Just bros looking out for each other :messenger_grinning:

Well, even Reiner had "The Sure Thing" and "North" mixed in with his banger run. My point is that Spielberg has multiple "8-10 year" stretches of stellar work.

None of these guys has truly unwatchable slop, even if it's some emotional sappy drama far from my wheelhouse.

Hey don't bad mouth The Sure Thing.

Not only that but during that golden run of movies his production company Castle Rock also produced Seinfeld (1989-) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

Apparently Reiner wanted to direct Shawshank himself but instead he ended up being Frank Darabont's mentor on the project.

schizo meds have proven to be largely a failure, at least as a society-wide, large-scale means of keeping these people "functional"

also I hate how this is how I found out about Romy Reiner's existence

I mean obviously he is insane. I'm just pretty okay with insane people being locked away forever or executed for slaughtering people. Were his schizo medicines supposed to 'address a chemical imbalance?'

Paging Tom Cruise.

Fuck. Imagine having a guy in your fam whose a combo of: schizo, violent outbursts, druggie, anti-rehab, and kills your parents. And he's only 32 years old.

Those family dinners must had been a hoot.

It's not like he showed up fully-formed as a crazy guy. This was your baby. Your little boy. All those birthdays and Christmases (or perhaps Hanukkahs in this case). Summer vacations. Sunday dinners. And it leads to this.

At least that's the parent's perspective. To a sibling, he's your brother. He was always there.

As a parent we just try to instill good values and respect for yourself and others and hope our kids make the right choices because once they get to a certain age we just become advisors because they are going to do what they want anyhow

RIP to Rob and Michele.

Trump is doing this for nothing but attention. He sees someone loved and respected getting an outpouring of attention, and he wants the spotlight back on him. He doesn't care how he gets it. In fact, being as vile and disgusting as he can be garners him more spotlight. It's just rage baiting for narcissistic satiation.

While I agree that he could have used better text, that was days ago. Agreed but that doesn't stop my support for his initiatives.

You know what is going to happen when Trump leaves right? Are you going to show the same restraint or piss on his grave? I was never a fan of Rob's Trump derangement but that doesn't make me spite him in this sad situation.

I don't think I've commented here but rest in peace for sure.

Reveling in silence is what I'll be doing on that day, and I'm not the least ashamed to admit it. But it will be kept private.

Trump is a vile person, and the treatment he has received is commensurate with the character and treatment he has lived by and has inflicted upon others during his life. Rob's statements about Trump were perfectly justified and accurate.

I can peacefully agree to disagree. At the end of the day, Trump was being an idiot. That doesn't mean that we should all go out and vote Democrats on that alone LOL but I think you know what I mean.

I agree with you more than I disagree.

Trump almost got his head destroyed on live tv, he was also (according to him) unfairly prosecuted by his critics.
He will never show any grace over his opponents and, honestly, he has every right to do so. The most vile people saying he should turn the other cheek are hypocrites.

This is entirely different from a person who doesn't align with Rob Reiner political views to mock and ridicule his death.

Yep. I actually know a guy, a long-time family friend, who is disturbingly close to Nick in this scenario.

I don't think he's violent, but he's had every privilege in life (parents aren't Rob Reiner rich but probably have a net worth of $30-$50 million or so), but he's a total mess. He's 40 and lives like he's 19, just floating from house to house owned by his parents and alternating between periods of crazy behavior, then straightening up and "working" at the family business for 3-6 months, then quitting and becoming reclusive for a year or so, and then repeating the cycle.

I think the sibling dynamic has worsened things for him because his younger brother is now the successful one with a family, kids, and full leadership of the family business. It seems that Nick's brother is stable and successful, and that can exacerbate things when you see your own failures in their success.

But all that to say: the guy I know was totally normal growing up. "Cool," even. But he's becoming increasingly erratic and strange as the years go by, and was recently hospitalized after a mental breakdown that involved meth use and public nudity. Just wild to witness, especially seeing how his life and his brother's have diverged (and remembering when we were all kids and he was the "cool" older brother).
