Roblox community is recreating mass shootings

"We do not tolerate racism, discriminatory speech, or content related to tragic events"

Roblox is facing difficulties with moderating recreations of mass shootings in-game.

As reported by The Verge, Anti-Defamation League researcher Daniel Kelley has spotted numerous recreations of New Zealand’s Christchurch mass shootings on the community-driven platform.

Most recently, Kelley spotted one of the recreations when creating a presentation on how to report offending content. The Verge had confirmed Kelley’s finding and located two different servers that focus on the shooting via simply searching 'Chirstchurch'.

Roblox confirmed that the aforementioned servers have since been removed from the platform. The company stated that references to the Christchurch mass shooting are increasingly difficult to block through text searches as a "catchall filter" would block all references to the city.

Earlier this year, Roblox went public with an impressive first day, after claiming in an IPO filing that over half of children under 16 in the US have played the game. In the same filing, the company named community moderation as a potential risk to the business, stating that if it cannot provide a "safe environment" then the business would "suffer dramatically".

"Hateful ideologies"

"Each game on Roblox is potentially a social platform in and of itself, and can potentially give refuge to players of all ages who are flirting with or fully engaged with hateful ideologies online," said Kelley (via The Verge).

"Every space that allows for the veneration of hateful ideologies contributes to the normalisation of these ideologies and their spread."

Addressing the in-game servers found by Kelley, a Roblox spokesperson stated: "We promptly removed this experience from Roblox after it was brought to our attention and suspended the user responsible for violating our Community Rules."

"We do not tolerate racism, discriminatory speech, or content related to tragic events. We have a stringent safety and monitoring system that is continuously active and that we rigorously and proactively enforce."

Roblox is currently facing a $200 million lawsuit over alleged music misuse in-game, from artists such as Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran.

Roblox saw a revenue rise of 127 per cent to $454 million for Q2, 2021, with strong player growth in Asia-Pacific countries.

Saw that tweets and article a couple of days ago.

Not that surprising sadly. I do wonder if Apple knows given their friendly relationships with Roblox but ehh, not much they can do. Maybe a flag that filters only creation from validator creators.

I swear to God, I would like one time to search for "Christchurch" on Roblox and not find a new recreation of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting on a game platform aimed at very young children.

now why would you want to search for christchurch on roblox.

you dishonest attention seeking drama whore

Cause kids play games like Roblox and Roblox allows users to create to UGC (User Generated Content) so someone needs to check if those games are moderating the UGC (User Generated Content) created. If you have a job in that field (cause you find it a meaningful purpose) you would be checking new platforms. Ignoring the fact that is a game where alot of young kids are spending alot of time.

Do you have an issue with his motivation in checking UGC moderation? Or his actions aka tweeting about it?
Do you have an issue with the researchers whom are quantify the disinformation on other platforms?

I thought Roblox was being played by 10 year old or younger still. How does this have a community and shit like this?

And the bulk of players is what? 8-9yr old? It is a bit scary to be honest. We are raising a bunch o psychos
Not here, if my kid installed Roblox he'd be homeless :messenger_tears_of_joy:

But seriously, we're trying to raise our kid as a good lad, he doesnt swear, like any of this Tiktok, Facebook garbage, hell I cant even get him to watch Aliens, he's a bit too straight laced most of the time.. but

I, on the odd occasion, say to the missus, have we screwed up here? We're teaching him to be a good kid and hopefully a nice adult but when we look around all we see are a bunch of feral arseholes

I think we need to move.

I've never played Roblox. Looks like it was for the best
not really, 99.99999% of roblox content is just fine. But as in any platform that enables user generated content, theres going to be a couple of outliars.
In any case, the fix is simple: set a usd 100 to register as creator, similar to what Apples does.

I am trying to figure out if you think there should be no external pressure on platforms/games to moderate their UGC content but the problem should (maybe rightfully) fall on parents to ensure that kids don't go onto any platform with any UGC. It does sound like the latter.

I hope you can understand people's world view that sometimes kids access platforms and games that are largely wholesome so parents allow it and then you have bad players in the world ready to exploit that. Therefore an external player is needed to ensure moderation is happening. Tweeting is a way to raise this issue as much as you seemingly dislike it.

I am also interested if you have any kids but it's a personal question so feel free to ignore.

Sick people get joy out of corrupting young children. Whether it's introducing young children to pornography, nurturing suicidal thoughts or encouraging thoughts that could lead to school shootings, etc.

There are some truly evil people in this world and they're online with the rest of us.

Sorry if I'm ignorant, why would you be searching for Christchurch?
Why would a user i don't know, him cause he is checking if they are moderating the UGC and enforcing their own policies.

Roblox Community Rules – Roblox Support

Overly violent content and/or content related to tragic current events or circumstances. We do not allow such content, including:
  • Atrocities, massacres, and other shocking real (or pseudo-real) world events; and
  • Extreme violence, physical or psychological abuse.

Why would someone be searching for CHRISTCHURCH as a matter of course?

10 minutes of searching despite using specific keywords? Unlikely it had much visibility. On a platform for user-generated content, the tools to automatically screen content aren't going to be 100% effective prior to publishing or there will be too many false positives. Whatever falls through the gaps is sorted out by user reporting and active moderation.

If this was getting a million users before being taken down it'd be a more reasonable claim regarding their moderation practices.
