After reading Gary's epic post up there, I really can't wait to see this movie. Not just because it looks like a good movie in general, but because it looks like it incorporates a ton of elements that I love.

Oh if you are still reading the thread Gary, did I miss the explanation about showing your fingers to people? Assuming it was radiation or something.

I may be wrong, but I think they were wanting to see if his
hands were shaking. Apparently, people got the shakes due to eating too much human flesh.

These fuckers gave The Fountain 48% which is a masterpiece of modern cinema. So yeah, I trust noone which is why I get burned a lot too with horrible movies that deserved their rating. I'll go see Book of Eli on Monday.

50% is pretty good in my opinion.

Half like it, and half don't. That usually garners some good arguing at least. Besides, the best movies always promote a bit of discourse and dissent.

This movie looks awesome and will... in fact be awesome. Can't wait. Everything I've read about it sounds right up my alley. Thanks Gary!

I'll watch it if it ever comes to Costa Rica. Why it's taking so long for some movies to arrive here lately (or at least, later than usual) is puzzling to me. =/

Might try and see a matinee on Sunday or next weekend.

Good or not, it's good to see Whitta on the silver screen.

Gary, how much onscreen is you? I know, obviously, it's your basic plot, but I keep hearing about re-writes, which worry me.

I want to like this movie because I enjoy post apocalyptic fiction but Eli having a working iPod 30 years after the world goes to shit is completely retarded and does not give me much hope.
Though I typically auto-dismiss any criticism that uses the word "retarded" I feel compelled to point out that we explain how and why the iPod still works. And if that's the kind of trivial detail that puts you off a movie I really can't help you.

It's absolutely my movie, probably only about 10% different from the original script I wrote. Scene-for-scene it is practically identical.

I just got back from the theater. I thought it was a very good film, and I appreciated the tone of the movie. It wasn't heavy handed but was respectful with the material. Good job, Gary. I wanted to help contribute to the opening weekend (I rarely do). I hope my $4 goes a long way. Hey, I'm unemployed, I can't afford a $10 evening showing. :)

Oh, and I waited to see your name show up in the credits. I then gave you a round of applause, though I don't think anyone else in the theater understood why.

Tbh, if I wrote a script and one person liked it, I'd be pretty chuffed. Of course, the more the better. It's good that there are loads of positive reviews.

Haven't seen the movie yet I'm going tonight, but all I can say is that about half of GAF is well educated people with valid opinions and the other half worship the golden calf of Metacritic and Rotten Tomato ratings.

P.S. Gary you should put out T-shirts with the 4x Gary Whitta. I would buy and wear.

We just passed 50 "Fresh" reviews, the overall percentage among Top Critics is higher (52%) and the RT Community review score rose to 82% in the last 24 hours since the movie opened. It's at 76% user rating at IMDb based on 418 reviews.

that especially is pretty good.

Oh man this movie totally lived up to my expectations. Sooo good.

I really want to see it again to see how many
hints to the twist
there were. I can already think of a couple now.

GARY WHITTA DELIVERS. :D

Congratulations on the release Gary. Regardless of what review sites say - you got a script picked up, had amazing directors/actors/etc. sign on to make it and it got made, and now thousands and thousands of people will sit there for two hours and enjoy it.

The snippet I read about the iPod also said that it plays a somewhat important part in the story so it doesn't seem all that trivial to me.

Eli goes to a town in order to charge it but then runs into trouble

If there is a reasonable explanation as to why it still works after 30 years, I'll gladly eat some crow. I'll reserve judgment until after I watch it tonight.

I think a 50% is a good score for an aggregate site. I've definitely enjoyed movies that scored much lower than that. Can't wait to see it. I may have to wait until next weekend though sadly.

I was really surprised how packed the theater was at 11:30 in the morning today. Hell, it was nearly as full as it was when I saw Avatar around the same time on it's release day. Hopefully thats a good sign!

Man there's some hilarious quotes in some of these reviews:

Doing for Christianity what Battlefield Earth did for Scientology, The Book Of Eli is an ill-conceived, preachy leaden dud that's painfully pretentious and deserves to limp off the cinema screens in a mercifully swift time. Avoid.

The result is like The Road rewritten by Sarah Palin for the greater good of Alaska and mankind
- This is London

Remember how, when you were watching The Road, you thought to yourself, "This needs more kung fu and Jesus"? God, and the Hughes brothers, heard your prayers.

Wow, those are some awful reviews. Remind me to never take these critics seriously.

Ooh that reminds me, I gotta find a good "haters gonna hate" GIF, I'm sure it will come in handy over the coming days. Should I go with the fat kid or the water-skipping eagle?

Wow, Gary actually wrote it? I thought he was just a cinematographer or something!

Congrats, man. I hope the movie does well for you. If I go see a movie over the next few weeks, I'll make it this one.

When did you start writing the screenplay?

Fat kid is timeless.

First draft was written late-October 2006 so it was a little over three years from genesis to screen. Not bad by Hollywood standards.

I only listern to reviewers who have had a movie made with denzel as lead.(and Empire)

Looking forward to seeing this movie.

Why did you say that like the cinematographer fetches water?

First I'll clarify that it was just a joke, as if that would've been insignificant. But I didn't mean to put that occupation down. My point was more to say that I didn't realize he wasn't just someone working on the film where his influence might be indiscernible, but, instead, he created the fucking thing.

Trust me, the cinematographer's influence on this film is VERY discernible.

Yeah, that's very true. The brown, hazy kind of look to fit the post-apocalyptic theme, and all that. Which makes my initial post even more ironic, haha.

I just the urge to see it tonight with my buddies (who also want to see it) after reading this thread. I'm excited for Gary since this must be such a crazy experience for him.
