Rumor: Atlus to Localize Yakuza 5 in the West

That didn't stop Atlus from region locking Persona 4 Arena.

Simultaneous releases, both with English and Japanese text and voices. They were literally the same game, but about $20 less in North America. It was an odd situation, and there's no reason why Yakuza 5 would need to be locked.

I just asked a couple Atlus USA folks and they haven't heard anything about this. FWIW. Seems pretty unlikely to me - they're not a big company and they just announced like 4 new Persona games.

Another Yakuza 5 thread, another thousand hopes & dreams crushed thread.

So it seems like Atlus, in addition to its own games, will sort of become Sega's in house translators as well? That'd be an interesting setup.

That's assuming this rumor is true of course.

When Atlus bought Sega there were basically two scenarios we discussed.

The happy-time, everything's-coming-up-Millhouse one was that because Atlus USA is a high-quality, efficient localization outfit, Sega would just start using them for their own internal games, letting them localize a larger portion of their output at a more efficient cost than they could've on their own.

The negative scenario was that Sega remembered that they already had a localization branch in the US and had mostly fired everyone from it already so they fired everyone at Atlus USA too.

At least based on what we've seen so far, we seem to be leaning improbably, but excitingly, towards the former.

EDIT:

oh shit owned
Nobody is more tone-deaf about this than Atlus.

Atlus is just trying to break people of a bad habit. I'm pretty sure it costs them close enough to zero sales and it doesn't encourage any nonsense from the fan subculture, so I'm gonna call that a win-win.

Are you 100% certain that they say the truth? Maybe they are planning a huge surprise for fans #DesparatePerson

I don't think they'd really come out and say, "Oh yeah, we're working on Yakuza 5. Look forward to it sometime this Fall." Maybe in a month or two we'll know if Atlus is actually doing it or not.

Jason, you're an amazing human being and you do wonderful work at Kotaku. But in this case, you really suck for being the bringer of potentially bad news. ;_;

I'm LTTP on this series (actually haven't arrived yet, waiting for a copy of Y4 to arrive in the mail), but I'd like to see that samurai one get localized.

Yeah, the fact they stuck Haruka in some idiotic dancing minigame really puts me off. It's one of those things that tells you the creators really aren't driving at anything particularly special. I enjoy a lot of the elements of the Yakuza games though, so I'm vaguely hopeful they do localise this. I still haven't played 3 or 4 yet, though, since I've never had a PS3.

The idol stuff's actually a very big part of the story, and Haruka's portion has more than just dancing minigames. It's a nice change of pace after Kiryu and Saijima. The second half of her chapters has Akiyama come in, so you still get your fightan.

Yakuza really is Shenmue's successor. Even down to the crushing of hopes and dreams.

What about Kenzan?

That game that was released only in japan five years ago that's getting its own sequel, which was also only released in japan which is coming out after the japan-only fifth entry to the mainline series which, up until that entry, was released outside of japan?

I'll try it if I get the chance to in English, but as a fan from the first game I have to say the Haruka stuff looks completley uninteresting to me. Can't see a lot of people who buy the series to suplex fools onto concrete liking it either, but I'll keep an open mind I guess...how much of the game would you say consists of playing as Haruka?

I really don't get why people fuss over that. Other mainline Yakuza games have you dating hostesses, fixing up relationships, and singing Karaoke. Are a couple rhythm game sequences that threatening to the player's manhood?

Not many people can handle being an idoru.

Clearing the game with minimum sidestories done in about 40 hours, around 5-6 hours of that was Haruka.
