Rumor: Call of Duty 2016 to Be Set in the “Very Far Future,” to Feature Space Combat

Source of rumor is some posts here on GAF in this thread, now being reported by various sites, so I thought a new thread was ok.

Please lock/delete if not appropriate or not substantial enough.

With the past few Call of Duty games being set in the not-too-distant future, some franchise fans might be thinking or wishing that future games in the franchise — specifically this year’s iteration being developed by Infinity Ward — either return to the present day, or go back to the World War II era. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Noted industry insider shinobi602 has posted a few details on this year’s Call of Duty over on NeoGAF and he mentions how the game will be set in the very far future, will go the sci-fi route, and even have space battles!

Eggbok: Wasn’t Ghosts already sorta futuristic though? Not to the level of Black Ops 3 and Advanced Warfare but still there.

shinobi602: This makes Black Ops 3 feel like the stone age. Metaphorically of course.

El_Chino: Are we talking Battlefield 2142 style?

shinobi602: Very far future. Space combat. Full on sci-fi.

While we usually don’t believe or report on any rumors that pop up out of nowhere, shinobi does have a very decent track record when it comes to these things. Of note, he leaked that Black Ops 3 will feature wall-running, and robotic limbs and cybernetics which the Specialists used that all turned out to be spot-on. Not only that, but he confirmed that Black Ops 3 was coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 and that it was being handled by another studio (not Treyarch).

Thoughts on Call of Duty 2016 supposedly taking the franchise in this direction?

COD chasing Halo and Titanfall eventhough it is ahead.. what the fuck?

CoD won't get me away from my established Sci-Fi shooters so I won't get it, though a game set in the past would get me to buy it..

Fans: Can we go back to WWII?
Activision: THE KIDS WANT ANOTHER FUTURISTIC SHOOTER!

Isn't the audience at large used to score streaks and a lot happening all the time at this point? I wonder if going back to something more simple would be viewed as a downgrade by some.

I like a futuristic setting but I'm just blah about this. It doesn't sound appealing at all. I hated the ending of Ghosts but I would have preferred it stayed somewhat close to that time frame since the other two games already exist in the future.

Could be interesting I guess, way more appealing to me than a modern era setting at least. IW also hired some naughty dog employee's so I'm expecting the campaign to be better than Ghosts.

Futuristic...

I don't mind, COD:AW is my favourite COD, so I'm fine with sci-fi settings in this game series.

I wish they went with different style for the different COD teams' efforts, however. This "future" theme has been pretty much the same across all COD games since 2011.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
GAF -> Internet -> GAF : the thread: the movie: the videogame

Shame. I was hoping Infinity Ward would counter the other CoD titles by going back to darker, grounded CoD4 type stuff, especially with the Modern Warfare 10th anniversary coming next year.

Oh well.

Terrible.

Ghosts was shit but returning to Ghosts at least meant a return to grounded COD. Guess not then.

I guess the Ghosts story is also thrown out the window, which is a shame because the twist at the end actually got me interested in seeing what was going to come next.

Can somebody explain me why publishers/devs refuse to fill holes in gaming genres/settings and they chase same things (beside tough that if it was popular once must be for 5th time)? People are desperate for WW2 or Western games and yet nobody makes them.

I don't mind sci-fi either but they have three studios now working on the franchise it would be nice if one of them mixed it up a bit instead of all of them being futuristic. I think it would help with the burnout a lot of people are feeling with the series.

As much as I enjoyed BO3, the settings were the only thing holding it back. I find the future setting to be boring and looks so dull, as well as the weapons.

Wont be picking that up unless it really stands out.

I would imagine because the future stuff is continuing to sell.

Sure, there are lots of people claiming to want a WW2 game, but would a game like that be a knockout hit in this day and age? They probably don't want to take the risk.

Sorry, I'm not gonna buy that.

The only CoD I'll buy at this point is one with standard controls and technology, preferably one of the WWs, but I'd settle for Modern Warfare.

Fuck this space shit, we already have Destiny for that.

Ghosts used to be my least favorite CoD, but right now I hate AW the most because of its legacy and impact on the series.

That "twist" actually made me want to never play another IW COD again.

Full on Sci-Fi is right up my alley but Infinity Ward... I don't know guys, MW3 and Ghosts was (still is and always will be) a complete crap and somehow I cannot imagine that they will make something decent this time. But hey, who knows, right? (^_^)

At some point they need to re-boot the series if they want to stay relevant (for me), because going crazier and crazier with each game lost me several games ago and I had hoped at least 1 out of the now 3 studios working on the franchise would make a grounded game, while the other 2 could keep out-crazy the previous game.

Considering Black Ops 3 was the best selling game of 2015, you honestly think they're going to be need to reboot to stay relevant?

Also I got a feeling this will be grounded. Like it will be Sci-fi, but Sci-Fi doesn't always mean exo-suits and such. It's possible you may just be a regular grunt in a sci-fi setting.

Why it wouldn't sell? You think that RDR2 (3 actually) won't sell tons of copies when it is released? It is a bit different for MP FPS games because it is limiting factor but at least they could do what they did with Black Ops series where you could jump between past and present.

Call of Duty is always the best selling game every single year, only a GTA sells better, and that only comes out once every 5-6 years.

That's my point. People tend to act like the series is quickly dying it out when Black Ops 3 sold more than AW, so...

Just stop already! Go back to WW2 and show us how its done on the next gen hardware. Then I will be happy to play a COD game again. But yet another futuristic shooter? No thanks.
