Rumor: GTA V set in Hollywood [Update: Rumored Cast Post 330]

Having lived in West Hollywood part of me likes the idea of being able to freely rampage around town. But in terms of making a good game... really, Rockstar? Why not London, Paris, Rome, Moscow, etc? Maybe they're gun-shy about those cities because they don't want to be looked at as trying to emulate the terrible Wheelman? But GTA has been to London before... It just seems like putting GTA5 back on the west coast isn't a very creative choice.

if they really wanna go all out...they should make

GTA V: The whole entire world.

That's right. They replicate the entire world and your missions span across the whole world.

the game would take 20 years to make.

I honestly think someday it will be possible. Just get Google or NASA on board to plot out the entire geography of the world, make it an MMO where people can develop entire cities and other people can visit. Have achievements like "climbed Mount whatever". Basically let people do whatever they want on this new Earth. It could be called Earth 2.0 :D

Vice City or bust.
Even if it was Vice City they probably wouldn't go with another 80's setting, which is what made the game what it is. (Hint: Awesome)

Rockstar has done Liberty City (New York) three times now, and not including spin offs or side games.
You can't compare the 2D games with their 3D succesors, and GTAIII was a generic East Coast city, inspired by New York, but with very few, if any, recognisable landmarks. The third island was just pure fiction.

Vice City and San Andreas on the other hand, were much more true to their real-life couterparts, especially San Andreas.

But it's been 6 years already, and didn't people LOVE the episodes for GTAIV ? Basically two new games, set in the exact same city ?

He called it!

Did he? About Hollywood?

To the people wanting a GTA in another country but the US... The USA has always been a big part of the GTA DNA since GTA III. The game references/parodies/laughs at so many different aspects of North American culture I think it would be a wrong decision for a modern GTA game to be set in something other than the US of A.

The USA culture is known throughout the entire Western world, and that is what makes it relatable to the players.

Setting the game in London (again) or Paris or whatever will make that stuff go down the drain for the people not familiar with that culture.

Why would a rich man want to go around doing petty crimes, and not mention murder and terrorism, for random people? He's rich, they should be answering to him.

And this is the main problem with modern GTA. I'm tired of these main characters who make no sense. Return of silent characters or asshole/prick main characters for the love of all that's good PLEASE.

lol it may sound ridiculous, but corporate scandal and underhanded dealing would be my idea of Grand Theft. We can only keep experiencing these same petty crimes for so long, move up to the big leagues.

Calling bullshit on this one.
Same. I don't think they'll release GTA V till next gen. Even if it's not V, Hollywood is just a fraction of what we saw in SA.

Praying for Vice City in the 80s again.

Hollywood could be fun, not so much the environment but the characters in it and maybe some variation in the missions. Being a movie star, playing a part in a few movies in real-time? Could work. But please make a GTA: London.

How are they going to pull off the characters in those locations where the dominant language isn't English? Part of GTA's appeal is their characters and how well they fit into the location and time period that they're based on. How could they pull that off if they were to base it in Japan? There's no way they could try to sell it with everyone speaking Japanese. And yet if everyone is speaking English then they run into a problem with the characters not fitting into their location.

I don't think it'd be an issue. The main character can be an out-of-towner (like in every GTA already) who speaks English. The Japanese cast could all speak Engrish, the city NPCs could be a mix of Japanese speakers and foreigners speaking English. Hell one of the GTA games (SA?) already had random city people speaking Japanese.

The same way any Hollywood movie does it. By having all principle characters speak in English while the random chatter is done mostly in whatever the native language (or a mix of languages) is.

That would be pretty pointless . And that's why GTA will never be set in a country where the majority of it's players do not speak the language and where one ethnicity has dominance over everyone else.

Also another very important point what could you satirise in a GTA game set in japan/France/russia that the majority of the games buyers would understand?

Playing GTAIV nearly everyone would have picked up on the world around them stuff like America 's next top hooker and weasel news.

60s/70s/80s London tbh. It doesn't really matter that they've already done London, that was so long ago that a new GTA set in London will hardly be similar.
Either that or something futuristic. As long as it's not some generic city.

Someone mentioned Dubai. This is the most interesting prospect to me. Tokyo? Yakuza has 'Japanese GTA' covered. A Mexican city would be interesting, with the drug trade and all, but it might be too soon after RDR to do a 'Desert GTA'.

Dubai has ridiculous landmarks, plus the general excess and clashing of Eastern/Western culture there would make for some great story potential.

I am surprised this would be GTA V. I was expecting something like GTA: Hollywood for this gen and then GTA V for the next round of consoles.

Maybe Rockstar got tired of waiting, considering this pitiful generation just keep dragging on.

So for the PS2/PS3 era they've done versions of New York twice, 80's Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles... and now Hollywood? Do the Housers not want to do anything apart from an English take on American life?

I really think they should expand their horizons a bit. Yes the Getaway exists, as does Yakuza. But that doesn't mean they can't do London/Tokyo/anywhere else outside of America. Also, 3 of Rockstars best efforts (Bully, Red Dead Redemption and Vice City) haven't been set in the present.

I was really hoping for a japan like location, something with a very dense city and an amazingly scenic natural area. Hollywood is such a ugly city in terms of natural scenery.

Wouldn't "Hollywood" just essentially be LA in general, like part of San Andreas? Hollywood itself isn't a very big place.

GTA: Detroit. Never has a city been so rife with parody potential, we had a gangsta mayor after all. Put in four areas (City, suburbs, "upper peninsula" and Canada) and you're good to go.

Yeah, but if they all spoke Engrish then they'd have people complaining about how it sounds goofy or how they can't understand what they're trying to say. As Dabanton said, the language issue is the main reason why I don't think Rockstar is going to base a GTA off a location where the dominant language isn't English.

I'm hoping for a return to Vice City in a time when Tommy Vercetti rein is winding down. Like late 80's early 90's. The soundtrack alone would (could) be great!

Now this sounds awesome...

Detroit city, the burbs, and canada....I WANT

That sounds awesome. Can't wait for Rockstar to bring their storytelling magic to good old Weirdowood. I predict enough Paul Thomas Anderson nods to make your nose bleed.

I can see Rockstar parodying the sleazy showbiz stuff really well in an entertaining game, delving into drugs, porn, working your way up to become a big movie star or something, but it's a bummer that "Hollywood" itself is such a boring and dirty place.
