Rust early access sales top 500k, Garrys mod 4M

PTFBecG.gif

Rust was "released" as Early Access on December 11th.

Rust sold 150,000 copies in its first two weeks, which would be up till December 25th.

It has sold 500k copies now, which is another 3 weeks later.

So that would make another 350k copies sold in three weeks? Damn.

edit: I'm an idiot, game hasn't sold a million yet, but half a million. Fixed now. It sounds a lot less impressive now, but still :P.

Is rust good?

How does it compare to dayz? Are they similar?

Damn, impressive stuff. Congrats Garry!

Will this thread be free of people crying about Early access game and how they destroy gaming as we know it?

I've bought both Rust and Day Z. I like them both, and can't wait to see what they grow into. Not every game will have the financial success to allow them to grow properly, but hopefully these two games take advantage of their earnings to make the experience what it truly should be.

Pretty similar, but Rust has more emphasis with crafting.

Survival with or without zombies is the new WWII shooter.

Really only in the indie scene currently. All done with zero marketing and only word of mouth sales.

Soon we shall see watered-down survival games from AAA studios. COD is now on it's way out.

I would be interested to see a AAA take on the genre, but I don't think it will pan out. Marketing towards the lowest common denominatory just wouldn't work in this genre.

Other than maybe State of Decay, I can't see this stuff really working on consoles. Haven't played DayZ or Rust but even from a cursory glance they are wayyy more complex/deep than State of Decay seems to ever amount to.

This is probably going to be a big PC genre. It'd be interesting to see if MMOs fall off to the side (as if they haven't already) from the survival genre.

Day Z has lots of inputs, but nothing that couldn't be done on consoles with a bit of refinement and tuning. For instance, player stance is controlled with 3 keys on the PC, but just like COD, you can control standing/crouched/prone with just the B button. Lot's of refinements like that can be made.

State of Decay is still technically Indie, though it has a small Microsoft contract.

Still waiting on a AAA game on the genre. This looks interesting but will wait for the full release.

I don't know if catering towards the lowest common denominator and homogenizing the experience would find success with the current audience.

I don't think those type of gamers would be interested in such an experience in the first place.
