RYU GA GOTOKU: New Gameplay Vids

they are
and the game is HOT HOT HOT
I want an announcement DAMMIT!

Edit: I'm hopeful for Yakuza, but I want it to be official. :)

i was discussing this with Cormacaroni - there surely has to be one of two paths for sega

1) full blown 18-rated game, and keep everything in

or

2) cull out all the stuff that Americans wouldn't like - two school girls asking you for some 3p action for instance, is that going to survive?

Maybe it's just the DMC3:SE talking, but that looks pretty boring. Is it like Shenmue where you can learn new moves and build their level up? And is that the actual in-game music or something GT threw in there?

DMC3 is an ACTION GAME, Ryu ga Gotoku is an ACTION RPG. Learn the differences. :D

I read the preview in this months PLAY. They said it's made by amusement vision. Same team who did Spikeout for Xbox. It's like an open ended RPG with an ultra refined Spikeout fighting engine.

I've got this game sitting on my desk, but I just can't bring myself to play it for some bizarre reason.

Are we in the twilight zone or something? Am I truly seeing people diss the GREATEST GAME OF THE GENERATION?

If I were Zeus I would start striking people down right about now.

It's made by what was AV and Smilebit before Sega fucked up all the studios. The lead guys on the game are all from Smilebit. It's an awesome action RPG with a crazy good story and excellent writing.

I just looked at the first movie and The Warriors looks better than that....

Ryu is an action rpg? I thought it was a beat em up..

First System Shock, now this. You can't stop saying stupid shit today can you?

Correct, I've said it once and I'll say it again. Sega doesn't have the balls to release this game uncut in the US. PROVE ME WRONG SEGA! DO IT!

yes you can build up your character and learn new moves. The fighting engine is supposed to be incredibly deep.

Eh, it's probably another overhyped GAF game.

The combat looks like shit. There were times in that video where enemies were looking in the (player controlled) character's general direction and were doing combos to air because the character wasn't close. What the hell?

I've got this game sitting on my desk, but I just can't bring myself to play it for some bizarre reason.

i did the same - i had the game for a while and then i was off ill one day and fired it up.

OMG, WHAT was i waiting for? the game kicks all manner of ass, the main character is the biggest bad ass EVER - you can take everyone you THINK is bad ass and throw them away, Kiryu is just so many levels above.

Looks boring in shots? seriously, you need to play it - there is nothing boring about wandering around "shinjuku" as a balls out yak pimp looking for trouble.

In Ryu 2 i demand a "swagger" button

I think that's partly my problem. I just want a large chunk of time to devote to this game, and haven't had that yet.

Release the game as 18+ Sega, come on do it. Or release two versions. But release the game as it was meant to be!

you should at least plop it in to get a taste - it seems like the main game is quite short (i'm owned by work, so not had chance to finish it off) but it's pretty nice!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those fights are very early in the game, so the moveset is limited and the difficulty is scalled down.

Combat looks boring as fuck. Are there any better videos of RGG that show off this supposedly awesome fighting system?

Truth be told I'm not sure how you folk find the DMC3 videos not to be "boring as fuck" aside from the flashy lights.

Himuro said:
If you have played DMC3 you know why they're amazing. These RGG videos however are basically the same moves over and over ad infinitum

Guess what sparky? I have played DMC3 and the videos are still not interesting to me.

Well, I am playing Suikoden IV right now. Hmm, I guess I hate myself.

Yeah, and the person playing repeatedly kept trying to throw large enemies even though he got squashed everytime. I wouldn't judge the quality of the game on the guy playing these vids as he he is pretty obviously incompetent.

It looks good, it was just no fun watching the same combination for ten minutes. But if it's early in the game, it's understandable.

Himuro said:
Noone is "hating" we're just giving general impressions based off of these videos. That's what they're for.

Oh you're right. "boring as fuck" is a general impression.
Okay, you've gone and pissed me off. I'm quitting Suikoden IV and plopping this in now.

Himuro said:
Have I ever said I love Suikoden IV? Go and do what you want.

Damn, you are just no fucking fun, kid.

Okay watched the first video, I kinda understand now. This looks like an IGN video. Crappyass players who don't know how to "play" for the camera can make even the BEST games look like boring turd. Man, this guy really sucks at the game too. :(

Time for video #2.

I'm likely going to import this if Sega doesn't keep the Japanese voiceovers and just wait and play it on my import PS3. My Japanese should be decent enough by then.

Holy shit, the 2nd vid is hilarious. I noticed that he has SEVEN FUCKING FULL BARS OF EXP. If you're going to be taking videos to show off a game, at least LEARN SOME FUCKING MOVES! This isn't an INVESTMENT BANK, you don't gain MORE EXP by NOT USING IT! :lol :lol :lol

I've been studying for 4 years and I'm intimidated by this game, haha. I guess because of how everyone is saying how great the story is.

After seeing this, what really needs to happen is Sega needs to go all out and make Streets of Rage Next-gen in all of its original arcade beat-em-up glory.

4 years on and off, or 4 years near daily? If I'm not solidly fluent by then I'll be seriously disappointed. Hell, even the official non-native Japanese Language Proficiency Test estimates you only need 900 hours of study to achieve Level 1, which is pretty much full fluency. I think that's a bit optimistic, but still, I'm amazed at how much progress I've made in just the past couple months.

Japanese is ridiculously overrated in it's difficulty to learn, especially after I spent a hellish three months trying to penetrate Cantonese, which I promptly gave up on. Seven different sounds for 'e' that all sound EXACTLY the same?! That's no language... that's a mother fucking space station.

Well, as a big fan of the game, i would have to agree that its a pretty shallow fighting system. Nowhere near as in-depth a move set as Shenmue, never mind DMC. But...the combat is FUN. It feels brutal. When you whack people with a mountain bike, it feels different from whacking them with an umbrella or a neon street sign. It's just very satisfying. But it's not the only thing upon which you should judge the game. It's the atmosphere and the fun of realizing a common male fantasy - swaggering around like a pimp looking for trouble and kicks in a red-light district - that make it for me. And the story, which makes the likes of GTA look silly.

I don't care what country you're releasing the game in, you throw this quote on the front and I guarantee you'll push 500k+. :D

Joining the "I have no idea what is so special about this game" party.

It looks so completely mediocre in every possible way. Controls? Camera? Music? Visuals? Combat? Every last one of them looks absolutely nothing more than mediocre. I just don't see what's so special about this.

I even read Bebpo's impressions and I still don't get it, what am I missing?

a copy of the game

unless you are studying full time and dedicating almost all your time to it, it's going to be very tough. But good luck.

I've been a crap student for about 5.5 years - and i'm finding Ryu very tricky.

Well four years as a college student taking full semesters, working 30 hours a week and trying to socialize. Now that I'm working the 9 to 5 am I actually putting in consistent every day studying.
But it's not entirely the language issues I'm concerned about. Being that this game takes place in Japan with yakuza characters, that's the bit that's a tad intimidating.

I had a girlfriend who spoke cantonese and she tried to teach me a bit. Mother of god that is near impossible.

Most of the conversation is text-only, and you control the pace at which it advances. So really, there's no reason why you couldn't work through it with a dictionary and get every last nuance if you felt like it. Of course, some of the yakuza speak/kansai-ben may not be in the dictionary, but you can probably guess from the tone.

I see, totally understandable now. It's pretty much required to try and put in a little bit every day or every other day, or progress will be slow. What I wouldn't give to have someone like you live nearby, as that would make such a difference. Practicing full-on conversations would be too awesome. Instead I'm relegated to making cross-city trips to the Japanese cultural center, and just talking to strangers... who stare. ;_;

Damn straight, shit is just crazy hard. There must've been ~800 moments when my buddy would tell me I'm saying it wrong, and instead to say like so, and I'd just yell back 'WTF! That's exactly what I said! Rageohol!'.
