I'd just do all my school work naked. Start moaning and rubbing myself over whatever topic I was working on.

"Oh George Washington, ooh baby chop that tree baby! Georgie's been a bad boy!"

okay so my school just gave all the students in our highschool chromebooks for "free" (raised our taxes by a significant sum this year) but i would not have an issue with this if there where not so many restrictions to them. you can not access reddit youtube facebook twitter even when your not at school. also the school reserves the right to snoop on what you are doing on it even if you are at home and that they reserve the right to monitor you remotely through the camera on the pc and they can snoop on your private emails. this all just seems ridiculous. sorry for the rage post
Its called group policy. Sounds like any institution that doesn't want idiots being idiots on their new devices.

Fucking hell
Are you serious? How the hell is it supposed to work? We pay taxes for goods and services provided by the government. Regardless if we use them or not. You can't just pick and choose what things you pay taxes for based on what you use, that would be fucking absurd. And completely impossible to regulate.

I'm not arguing that people shouldn't be taxed, I'm surprised people pay different rates of tax for different schools.

It isn't just schools. Local taxes are different all over the place. Different areas of the country have higher taxes than the other. The local governments set these things.

Property Tax is the easiest tax levy to apply to people, since shelter is a basic human need.

There are families that move into specific neighborhoods to take advantage of the school district. It's common in Long Island.

Those Chromebooks don't come with grammar checks? Schools are lazy nowadays.

Higher paid and better trained teachers would do much more good for students than a free Chromebook, the latter is a lazy use of tax.

I have a Surface Pro, I am more than capable at utlising superior technology thank you #:)

I didn't say utilizing superior technology. I was speaking about proper utilization. You won't need an i7 and 16 GB of RAM to do Google apps. My main portable workstation for work is also a Surface Pro 3, but I also do administration with some development that on occasion calls for processing power. As I already stated in another post, it'd be entirely ridiculous to supply students with a $500 machine when a $250 meets their needs.

Can you get a chromebook to boot from a USB device? You could just install linux on one and use that.

People need to stop making suggestions like this. As the sole operating technician for my district it is not fun having to waste time fixing devices that students decided to fiddle around with. Most school IT departments are stretched thin enough. If the OP, or anyone still in High School, wants to screw around with school equipment then go speak with your tech department. It's not uncommon for us to have a pile of obsolete junk for you to play around in, and I'm more than happy to let a student learn the ins and outs of computers on a device not being put in use.

I'm a living testament to that. Basically, paying higher property taxes to go to an award winning public school is nearly equivalent to paying for private schools in other areas. Long Island is indeed a destination spot for many families for this very reason who want their kids to attend a good public school.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Reddit is a fabulous source for the civil war report you'll have to write

It actually is, AskHistorians is one, if not the best, history resource on the internet. And i'm not even kidding.

I really wish the OP would post a scan of the agreement or a link to more information about the program.

I can't find any information about email scanning, or remote camera viewing as part of the Chromebook testings that several districts within Chicago.

I did find that Cook County raised property taxes for schools, but by only $34 a year for a $250,000 home. Most of that money is going to support the pension fund, not to buy Chromebooks.

okay gaf as an update on the google chromebook thing, i have really warmed up to them. i understand now that they're here to help not hinder and that there very usefull. i love that all our textbooks are digital which i am sure saves the school and the state some cash. they are very easy to use and understand and they are very useful in keeping stuff organized. its a lot better than carrying those heavy textbooks around and it's a lot lighter. i like that there are less handwriting assignments now because of them because my handwriting sucks. i also don't really mind the restrictions anymore. i have a phone an ipod and a pc to browse the internet on so it doesn't really matter. the privacy concerns still kind of bother me but as long a i stay on the school's good side it won't matter much. so in short you were right i was wrong sorry for being an idiot. i guess i was just confused by the new tech and how big of a change it is from what i have been used too most my life

also sorry for the spelling i have dyslexia

Nice post. Being freaked out by something new is common, regardless of age.

I don't know man, you could have saved that tax money!

Jk it's great to see students realizing it's a good tool.

If you ever need tutoring or HW help from GAF, we're here.

If you are still worried about the webcam, just put a piece of black masking tape over it.

Back in Middle School someone had installed Leisure Suit Larry on the Library Computer.

We would go ask the librarian the age verification questions so we could get to the actual game.

Oh wow! You're still in school? I thought you were a teacher complaining about this stuff. Lol don't believe that the digital textbook is cheaper that's a lie. I've seen the invoices for the digital books and man! Is outrageous! In the district that I work for we have chrome books too but they don't get to take it home though.

I had to pay for my own shoddy Texas instrument calculator in high school and you complain about getting a free chromebook because you can't do non-school work on it? lol

The camera thing sounds weird tho, just put tape over the camera.

How is it useless and superfluous? It's meant for school work in school or at home, not browsing reddit or porn. I'm pretty sure a chromebook is enough for the work assignments you get in high school etc.

Why do you even need a computer for homework? Why not use paper like we all did? Why waste money on this shit?

And boo hoo hoo, I had to buy a graphing calculator I never used too, but at least I could play some shitty drug selling sim on it.

And that calculator still works to this day more than 10 years later, not that I ever use it beyond turning it on every year or so to see if it still works.

Why would you write on a paper when you can type it?

I'm seriously jealous of the generation in school right now. I wish I didn't have to carry giant textbooks around and the reverse classroom idea is absolute genius.

Writing papers, reading up on articles and stuff the school expects you to read etc. How can you not see the benefit of using a computer for school work over paper? Computers are used much more now in high school education then let's say 10 years ago.

I'm not crying over having to buy my own TI, I was just putting some perspective over the whole "I got a FREE chromebook for educational purposes but I'm mad because I can't use it for reddit". Hell, I still have my TI around.

Exactly, I had to deal with second hand textbooks with crap written on them. Glad you have seen the light.
