School gave us chromeboks, they are worthless

okay so my school just gave all the students in our highschool chromebooks for "free" (raised our taxes by a significant sum this year) but i would not have an issue with this if there where not so many restrictions to them. you can not access reddit youtube facebook twitter even when your not at school. also the school reserves the right to snoop on what you are doing on it even if you are at home and that they reserve the right to monitor you remotely through the camera on the pc and they can snoop on your private emails. this all just seems ridiculous. sorry for the rage post

Youtube is odd considering its a chromebook, but those were the type of limitations placed on it when I had got a computer from school on loan for a summer program. Not being able to download and install programs and a few other basic things just to do work was annoying.

So the Chromebooks themselves are not worthless, just the restrictions your school placed on them make them worthless. I feel like the thread title could have been a little less misleading.

Waste of money I agree. Unfortunately school districts everywhere are getting conned into this. At least they aren't worthless iPads.

Your school gave everyone those for free so everyone had a computer to do schoolwork on. That shouldn't be hard to understand.

Even without the restrictions, chromebooks seem to be of questionable quality. I like the idea of giving each student a laptop, but not like this.

Well, your privacy concerns are understandable, but they are school chromebooks - they're for schoolwork, not personal use, so having browsing restrictions sounds reasonable to me.

The camera to spy on you makes me raise an eyebrow, but everything else is par for the course. No excuses for not typing up that paper when they gave you a computer to do it on.

There is no way the school wound be allowed to "snoop" on you with the camera in any situation.

I would love if my kids school used chromebooks instead of the $1000+ I have to shell out to get ipads this month.

Chromebooks are just fine for surfing the web, creating documents, etc. what a student would do for homework. Why would you need to give students some high-powered machine for that?

I remember when I was in high school 5yrs ago my school got a 20,000 grant (which was a big deal since we were a small school with like 350 kids. What they decided to do with it was buy 100 iPads that no one ever used except to play games on.

Are you not allowed to purchase a cheaper tablet? I can't believe there's something an iPad can do that a Kindle Fire can't. Especially for a kid in primary school.

Are you really complaining about a free computer to use?

There's so many options on the internet and the few avenues you frequent are blocked; how about you try to learn something new to find new horizons and information rather than bathe in the frustration of your self imposed inconvience.

Agreed. It's kinda odd they put ristrictions and tracking tools on them though.

The computers are a meta lecture by your school, OP. They want you to learn how to use computers by figuring out how to disable website filters and spyware.

My little sister just got one from her school. I don't know if her laptop has the same restrictions but that camera snooping stuff sounds pretty gross. Just use it for homework, I guess. It's not like you're paying for it.

I would say the privacy concerns are very legitimate, especially if ti involves underage children (and OP is not in college).

That said restrictions seem reasonable considering it's a homework device. OP has a misleading thread title.

I don't know how much of that is patently true. I'm pressed to not believe him/her because he/she is a highschooler who may be over exaggerating.
