Sega Forever subscription service coming soon?

#1
There's a few bits of information starting to come out regarding a potential subscription service coming from Sega, named "Sega Forever"..

Here's a decent write-up of what is known so far: http://www.seganerds.com/2017/05/23/is-sega-forever-a-subscription-game-service-for-mobile/

I'm imagining an EA Access style service, seemingly on mobile- but I'm really hoping it makes the jump to PC and consoles as well.

Sega have created several social media pages for Sega Forever already... and they're all dormant so far.

What do you guys think of a Sega subscription service?
I personally love the idea, especially if they can bring it to consoles.

I imagine we'll hear more closer to E3.

it would be fantastic if it had all their games from genesis, arcade, saturn etc

but it won't so I'm not sure what it would be... If they somehow got superb emulation going on their old titles and arcade titles it would be something I wished for for a long time not only from sega but others as well.

Most old arcade games are already emulated so im not sure what the hold up is on a company such as sega/capcom taking it a step further and making emulation work well and for cheap it isnt like they are making money on their old arcade and console games while they could make it worth while and sell it.
It would likely only be the games they have already made work and while that's cool it's still missing way too much

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

It'll more likely than not just be the games they've released already as collections (what you can find on Steam) - multi-game packs from recent consoles, some newer-ish games like Sonic Generations.

In that case, I already own all I'd want on Steam, anyway.

If it somehow managed to freeze over hell and be a collection of ALL their games from pre-this gen, then hell yeah I'd be on board.

An all Sega subscription service?

My dream scenario would be having unreleased games on console like Daytona USA 2 or Planet Harriers; or newly released English translations like Segagaga or Sakura Wars 1-4 or the complete release of Shining Force 3.

But in reality I bet it will just be access to the same old Genesis roms and some Sonic stickers.

I feel like Sega has already played their hand too much for this to be super exiting. The latter half of the 2000s saw the porting there classics to everywhere and everything, and while it was a fun time, I really have no desire to now pay $9.999 a month to play Ecco the Dolphin.

That said, if this service can give me obscure Saturm and Sega CD games, then I'm all for it.

Needs to be very reasonably priced to compete with, y'know, ROMs, not to mention the collections Sega already sells. Or it needs stuff no one else has, like Saturn and arcade titles. Would be exciting if they do it, though!

^This is exactly what the service needs to become.

Panzer Dragoon was listed in the survey?

Oh shit.
^That is a good sign, hopefully they find a way to include every Panzer Dragoon game.

A service like this would be a good way for Sega to gauge interest in its classic titles.

If it means I can play Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon Saga on PS4 or Switch I'm all in.

If it's their Genesis games released again on mobile I'm not interested in the slightest.

I'm betting it's just Master System, Mega Drive/ Genesis. Not really interested on playing mobile with touch controls either.

If its Saturn, arcade or Dreamcast and comes to consoles and PC, I'm so down for this.

If it's just Genesis games for mobile, why wouldn't I just buy the genesis collection on Steam and extract the roms to later play on an emulator on my phone? Especially for fan patches and translations. If it's newer games, like Saturn or Dreamcast, is it streamed, or did they manage to make a great emulator? There seems to be too many unknowns and I have my doubts this will be good.

If it has the real arcade games there to play, amazing.
If it's mainly just Mega Drive games, meh.
Sega got so much better after the MD shame they wasted so much time on reviving that.

Same, it was so ahead of it's time. A cable modem digitally delivering games to a console. This was in a time when even having a modem was rare.
Well, it was more like a "-dem" as it never uploaded anything. The channel simply cycled the data for every game in the library constantly, and it wouldn't start loading until it was time for the game you selected to get its turn.

Still felt super revolutionary, I'm sure.
