Only allow selfie sticks if there is a go pro attached. This ban is dumb. And yes, I use a "selfie stick" for snowboarding.

Yes, but do you snowboard in a museum or art gallery, which is where the bans are?

No, you don't.

See? A completely different situation.

As for people saying 'But how could the selfie sticks harm the artworks?'...knock someone while they're using the stick, they fall over, stick flies into priceless work of art/ancient remains/person's eye/ear.

See?

Plus, if any of you have actually been to the National you'd know the place is already packed to bursting, especially when they have a special exhibition on, and there really is not the available space for idiots waving 1m long sticks in front of them.

stop being so obtuse...selfie sticks arent a necessity, you dont need one to take a selfie. The mere presence of others? what? imagine if everyone was carrying around 40 inch poles on crowded streets...

Given the choice, I would rather be asked to help people take pictures, which I have on countless occasions (that's what I get for working near tourist traps) than be whacked on the face.

Stop being so old-fashioned. All photos, use of smartphones, posting on internet forums... none of them are a necessity.

You don't see how this could be a huge nuisance in crowded public places? Or crowded theme parks or museums etc? It juts your phone/camera out a couple feet in a direction expanding the space you're taking up by quite a bit. Like I said, not a big deal for people to use them outside where there's space to walk, but in crowded areas, nope.

It's also only for a moment to take a picture. It's less intrusive than blocking off that same space with another person to take the picture.

All the time. Got an idiot friend who does it also and constantly posts on Facebook. He will have his selfie stick out and going while on Space Mountain and Aerosmith Rocking Roller coaster. Lot of people are doing this, surprised no ones been seriously hurt by someone letting these things slip. At Disney you got to hide the sticks when getting on the rides as they dont let you bring it on, but it's easy to hide and ppl love to sneak em on.

So stupid. What's the point for space mountain too...lol

Oh yeah I guess I should have specified. Mostly me and my friends use them for sports or crazy hikes. Indoors is just LOL

They can be pretty dangerous as a hazard honestly. I was at a local club two weeks ago and some chick pulled one out at the bar on her bday. Of course her drunk ass couldn't balance it properly, and it came crashing down on a bunch of beer/shot glasses. Bartender got glass in her eye, bday chick got escorted out...Its funny how you think its petty, but people are fucking clueless to their surroundings honestly..

I get cool angles in the park without needing someone to film. Which is kinda the point of using them in the first place.

But you realize...when you say to someone "look at this picture of me snowboarding"...no one gives a shit regardless of what angle its at. That's the point. There isn't some overwhelming need for more photos of everyone. Just enjoy snowboarding and don't worry about what other people think of it.

Perfect.

Never understood the reason for Selflie sticks in a crowded place. People are always happy to take a picture for you and it looks a million times better than any shitty selfie shot.

I think the sticks are stupid, but they do serve a purpose. I don't agree with a ban unless it is a safety hazard. I see some countries that's the case, but not all. PEACE.

I recently saw some people struggling to take a selfie so I offered to just take a picture of them and they stared at me like I had offered to shit on their chest or something.

The only non-dumbass use of a selfie stick that I have seen, is when a colleague was using it to record a statement from a politican in one of the events that I cover as a part of my job.

He held his phone steady and I could see it was useful just as any camera. I liked it.

Other than that, people look like jackasses using that shit.

I've seen way too many selfie sticks here in Japan. They're an abomination.

"selfie" is such an annoying word btw.
I try not to say I hate many things because it is a strong word that I think is misused plenty instead of dislike or whatever but boy do I hate the word "selfie". It just really bothers me. I know it shouldn't as it is just a word but it does and I can't help it. On topic, selfie sticks are stupid.

My girlfriend and I takes pictures of ourselves a lot but when the word "selfie" became popular, we gradually took less pictures. I don't know... just hearing the word selfie and every friend using that term in social media kinda irked me.

Never been a fan of the selfie and when I see a selfie stick being used I see it as a useful visual clue that anyone owning or using one is of below par IQ. However having said that I do not agree with them being banned. The Selfie stick isn't "harmful" no one has died from using a selfie stick so they pose no harm.

Think this is another case of "I don't like something so ban it".

It doesn't need to be harmful to be hazardous. And I think it is reasonable to consider a 3ft stick being waved around at head height hazardous when in a large crowded area.

I still don't get the fascination. Why do you want a photo taken from above (almost no photos I've seen hold hem out in front at head height). And why do you want a photo that mostly consists of a stick and your arm?

Bullshit.

I'm gonna invent a 10 meters stick so that you can take a picture of yourself from 10 meters because that's so cool. Don't ban it because they serve a purpose.

What purpose do these sticks actually serve?

If I want a picture taken from a distance, I'll ask a friend or a passerby if we all want to be in the photo. Why would I need a stick?

Hey, wielding a selfie stick isn't the most dangerous thing that a person who might be predisposed to wielding a selfie stick could do.

Selfie sticks are one of those things they will make fun of years to come when the look back at this decade. Like on retro TV shows there will be some hipster guy and duckface girl holding selfie sticks and listening to Kanye West and Mumford & Sons and everyone will be pissing themselves at how stupid and ugly the fashions and tech was.

I saw a dude in Camden almost walk right in front of a bus while filming himself using one of these. Would've made for an interesting selfie if it had hit him.

I always thought people taking pictures with an iPad looked ridiculous, then the selfie stick trumped that, then I saw they make selfie sticks for iPad...

See them a lot over here and don't really understand the hate.

On the contrary; it has the positive effect of stupid tourists bothering me much less to take their picture.
