New Super Mario Bros. sold 450k units in its second month, but in that month (June 2006) NDS had monster sales (593k).

Nintendo 3DS Software Sales Increase Nintendo 3DS XL continued to impact the video game market in September as overall sales of Nintendo 3DS software increased by 89 percent from the same period a year ago. Standout titles include New Super Mario Bros. 2, which sold more than 295,000 units in its second month, as well as Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which all saw sales increases compared to last month.

“Nintendo 3DS XL continues to galvanize our Nintendo 3DS business,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month. With a great slate of upcoming games, including Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which arrives exactly one month from today, we like our position heading into the crucial holiday selling season.”

In another milestone, Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS family of systems has now sold more than 5 million units in the United States alone. This is the third Nintendo DS game to reach the 5 million mark, joining New Super Mario Bros. (10.6 million) and Mario Kart DS (8.5 million).

Well....not really. The 3DS userbase is still waaaay smaller than the DS userbase. The fact that 3DS was able to pick up that much slack despite a smaller userbase is pretty impressive.

Another month, another terrible report about the performance of video games at retail. The NPD Group has just sent us the data for the September period (technically five weeks from August 26 through September 29), and to no one's surprise, the report showed total industry sales down 24 percent to $848.3 million. Hardware sales plummeted 39 percent to $210.9 million, while software sales (including physical PC titles) fell 14 percent to $547.3 million. Accessories also dipped 11 percent to $139.9 million.

The month was dominated by the release of EA Sports' Madden NFL 13, which quickly sold through 1.65 million copies in its first week on sale. EA Sports also scored with FIFA 13 (4.5 million worldwide in five days), but that title shipped near the end of the reporting period, as did Blizzard's newest World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, so the full US sales for those two will probably be reflected in October's data report.

Even with a new system (Wii U) and big titles coming soon, like Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin's Creed III, the industry is going to have a tough time breaking into positive sales territory. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said recently that holiday sales will likely be "relatively flat" and that new consoles are needed ultimately to reverse the ongoing retail declines.

Speaking of these final months, is the Wii U going to be included? (Can't remember if this has been discussed already...)

Yeah, it will start in November. At that point, the points per system will go down to 16.6667 or something like that. No even way to get it to 100 points, but throw enough decimal places at it, and it should be close enough. That way the system points will stay 100 for every month of the year.
