Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) - Visible Equipment Gameplay Video

Okay it's somewhere on the official site. Most people should be able to navigate towards it after the site actually loads. It's a terrible Flash site so I can't link directly to the video. Don't think anyone has uploaded it to Youtube either.

Looks pretty good honestly. 3-piece visible equipment + accessory (head, body, legs). The armor pieces look pretty distinct too. :)

Edit: Youtube'd!

Here we go: http://youtu.be/I3KasapG9uw

BTW, the site's horrible at loading because literally everything excluding the videos is packed into one 16mb SWF file.

My fear with visible equipment in games is that a lot of the good stuff will look dumb.

Having to wear worse equipment so that you can go through a serious story scene without concentrating on how ridiculous your character looks is not something I've ever enjoyed. (._. )

I can't actually view this video yet. Hopefully it shows up on YouTube soon.

I dunno. Not being able to see your guy actually fight in the equipment makes the feature a lot less interesting to me.

I mention this before too. Seems like a waste of resources to be honest. Aren't the cinematics done in the old school SMT fashion anyways?

Don't the cutscenes play out like a cross between oldschool SMT and Trauma team? Do you even see your character outside of exploring in the field?

slime stacks? DUMB?!

how dare you. Plus it's DQ vs SMT. A costume like that seems completely legit in Dragon Quest verse, serious scenes or not.

Thank you for hearing my words Atlus; I am not worthy.

Now then, how are the battle animations? *note, I don't really care since I can speed through both SMT 1 and nocturne without any problem.

Biker helmet on 1492 samurai costume. Hmm...

The death animations are pretty awesome.

know i'll love this game but, yeah, being able to see your different outfits while running around doesn't really compensate a whole lot for the lack of 3d battles :) ...

Some interesting things I noticed from the video:

- All equipment pieces influence HP, so the more you upgrade your equipment, the higher your Max HP.
- Headpieces all add bonuses to different base stats except for Speed.
- The leggings shown in the video add bonuses to Speed to none of the other stats.
- Armor does not seem to give any stat bonuses, but instead determines your affinity against the various elements.
- I have just realized that there is no "defense" stat at all this time, which explains why there is a direct impact on HP for equipment.

Interesting design approach.

It was an example. Lots of games with visible equipment have this problem.

Resonance of Fate doesn't! That's why it's the BEST!!! :D

Reminds of the old days when I used to play as a Dragoon in FF11.

The classic, purple level 60 Dragoon gear (Kain's armor) was amazing to look at, but it had shit stats compared to the level 60+ stuff.

I would love it if more games adopted the concept of a vanity slot so you could choose your appearance and get stats from something else.

DCUO was great about this. Still there was some horrendous looking equipment in that game. Funny though.

This is the best armor ever. Every game should have this armor set.

I really hope it leads to SMT 4 figures and a Demi Fiend figure.
I WOULD BUY A DEMI FIEND D-ART SO QUICK.

I really want them to get into SMT demons toys though. Like, I'd love an Ose or Justice figure.

If you ask me, goofy costumes make serious scenes far far better.

Nothing like trolling a fanbase by making powerful armor look like a fashion tragedy.

Thanks. Putting them in the OP.

NP. I like to consider myself a high-res media buff. Low-res makes me crinnnnge.

I like the Silver Rider and Blood Duke tops. Could do without the spikes on the rider top, though. Can't see myself wearing anything like the Ashigaru jingasa, either. I hope they have some modern, street clothe-esque costumes. I liked the pre-order hoodie one they unveiled earlier this week. Maybe throw in some dark jeans to match. :D

Oh, there were some other costumes that were shown off recently too.

Two downloadable costumes for Shin Megami TenseI IV were revealed by Japanese retailers. If you pick up Shin Megami Tensei IV from HMV or Lawson you can get a code to download "Law Clothes" armor. Law? Lawson? Haha! The outfit with the blue and white striped coat is the Law Clothes.

Grab Shin Megami Tensei IV from Tsutaya and you’ll get the "Tau Clothes." The yellow and blue hoodie is based on the logo for Tsutaya’s colors blue and yellow.

Right now, these are the only two costumes that have been announced for the protagonist, but since DLC costumes are enabled we’ll probably see more of them later on. Shin Megami Tensei IV comes out on May 23 in Japan.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I'm a bit confused, I thought there were multiple characters we play as in different parts of the game. Are there other characters or it is just this one person with visible equipment changes? If it's the latter, I'm a bit confused about the direction they're taking with this game.

cool. visible equipment changes adds a lot to a game for me.

So what are the stats then?

HP
MP
Strength
Magic
Agility
Luck
???

Just like the last thread I complained about this in, I REALLY hate having your armor visible in games. Particularly when they are pre designed characters and not generics you create yourself.

Visible weapons and toggled costumes are cool but I don't want stupid looking equipment blocking the characters the whole game. Has been a pet peeve of mine in any game that has it. SMT is about the last game I want to have any goofy as hell looking armor like in those screenshots as well.
