Should I sell my gaming PC for a PS4?

So to explain, I only want a maximum of two games consoles in my house. And I think with the amount of time I can put to gaming, that's fair enough.

I currently have a gaming PC and a Switch. Gaming PC is a little HTPC with an R9 Nano so reasonably beefy. Its hooked up to my TV with Big Picture Steam and a Steam Controller. The Switch is not in question, but the PC I'm considering selling for Cash and a PS4.

Steam has an amazing catalogue, but the PS4s heritage catalogue is improving. A number of cool PS2 Classics have been announced recently, including Code Veronica and those probably won't come to PC. In addition, a lot of the PS3 gen games that were previously PC only (this gen) that now have collections on PS4 (like the Ezio Collection). I'm also a big Final Fantasy fan, so I'm waiting on FFXV and will be in the same situation for FFVIIr. I also assume PS5+ will be fully backwards compatible because of x86 so again thats good for building up a library (can you sense a theme here?) I've not even mentioned PS4 exclusives yet.

In contrast PC has full backwards compatibility, pretty much all the existing FFs are on there. Its basically covered for most games in the PS3/360 gen, and similarly so for current gen (albeit with a few major exceptions). I also often pick up indie games, but can see my Switch increasingly getting those.

So my question is: Which should I pick? To stop it turning in to a console war, I'd like you to only talk about the positives about the platform you pick and your reasoning, and avoid being negative about the other platform. Thanks!

And lock if boring.

Edited to stop people asking me to get therapy.

I'd keep my pc.

I play more on my ps4 than my pc, but with a Switch, you'll be getting some of the quirkier japanese games that might not come to pc. Also as you say, the Steam library is impressive. And also very cheap if you wait for sales.

Its a good point. I do feel like I'm missing out on Kingdom Hearts for example, but I could totally see that series being ported to Switch.

What makes your gf think that 3 gaming systems is too much? Maybe you should re-arrange your cabinet accordingly instead.

I have a PS4 and PC on my TV's cabinet and it's perfectly fine. The PC is well-hidden.

For me it would purely be based on which platforms have the exclusives you want to play more. Multi platforms will be on both so as long as you are ok with differences in quality between console and PC, use thebgames to decide

Also worth bearing in mind that you'll then lose access to the current games you own on PC. a steam link is pretty discreet - couldn't you tuck the PC out of sight somewhere and have both? PCs can be useful for other things too

I don't really feel like I'm missing out on much playing only on PS4, as a somewhat casual gamer. I have a capable PC sitting on my desk (i7 4790k and GTX 970), and I did buy some games for it in the past, but I don't really have any urge whatsoever to play on there instead of on my PS4.

I would say you should sell your PC if you like the direction PS4 is heading and believe in it which I can see you are which fulfills your needs of gaming. Also, PS4 has good number of exclusives (already with great diversity) moving forward, and will have all the big 3rd party games that PC gets (sometimes as timed exclusives before PC) so it will lose nothing but some graphical features.

I guess my PC would have to be hooked up to a monitor for steam link to work? That would be the only difficulty.

In my opinion PS4, PC and switch is the perfect combo for this generation. You are so close to reach it. Don't give up. Get the PS4 in addition to the rest. It's just one more box and you're set, no need to get something else. Sell the PS4 as a great Netflix/Movie box to your GF.

Also why does your GF even care? That's a bit strange, imo. My wife would never force me to sell my PS4PRO or my PC.

It's mostly down to what you want from a gaming platform and what you want to play.

If PlayStation and Console exclusives appeal more to you then you may be more inclined to stick with your PS4.
On PC you have the largest and most diverse gaming library open to you among many other benefits so perhaps that appeals more to you.

For me I couldn't be without my PC, and I have a PS4 and Xbox One with many of their exclusives.
The PC is simply otherworldly for me as it can do so much things and provides me the opportunity to play games with higher levels of performance with improved visuals.

No. Not even talking about games, the PC gives you so much more.

Also, Your Girlfriend seems like no fun. only 2 systems in the house? I had more systems than that before my wife was born.

I only want a maximum of two games consoles in my house. More specifically my girlfriend doesn't want a house full of games machines.

In all seriousness this seems like a totally arbitrary number. Bumping that 2 to a 3 basically gives you access to most, if not all, of the exclusives you could want.

And the PC exclusives... which especially since OP likes indie games are quite numerous.

I really don't understand why your biggest motivator seems to be the PS4 maybe getting slightly better legacy title support

We have a pretty minimalist house. I won't lie, it looks pretty cool and the PC case I have basically looks like a sleek little speaker. It's only the Switch that actually looks like a games machine. That's how we both like it to be fair.

Whenever I'd sold a system in order to fund another I've regretted it.

If you like the look of the PS4 exclusives and upcoming games then maybe pick one up anyway. You can grab a slim for $200 if you shop around and I'm sure your SO will understand if you explain that gaming is your passion.

If the exclusives appeal to you, why not? I play more on my PS4 than my PC, which is partly because it has games like Bloodborne and Nioh which are my jam and not available on PC.

Then get the PS4 slim. It's also a very small, descent looking box. One more small device shouldn't be a problem.

Essentially its Jak & Daxter, Kingdom Hearts (all of them now), and still waiting on FFXV that has made me doubt my choice of console. But its a fair point. I think sticking with PC is the way to go, and just pray for KH and FFXV

Convince your girlfriend the Switch is a handheld system not a console and therefore doesn't count against the limit.

Do it, As further down the line your GF can get a ps4 also and you both could use the account share loophole, Meaning you both get to use 1 sub and both get to play the same game at the same time even though you only bought 1 copy.

Not just your GF, But you could do that with anyone you knew who had a ps4.

The JRPG's are making a great return also.

Nah. Convince her that PS4 + PC + Switch is all you need this gen.

Switch shouldn't even really count toward the limit. It's essentially just a tablet.

Do you have a large Steam collection?

I wouldn't give up my PC for what is only the potential of another machine from what you are stating.

Id personally hate to be put in the situation of having to get rid of some of my hardware but honestly if push came to shove Id probably get rid of my Switch, PS4 and various past gen consoles before I got rid of my PC.

Although that's probably mostly due to games I like (RTS, Total War, Grand strategy etc)

There are many photos of sleek looking, minimalist gaming setups with more than two consoles and a PC here - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1329385 (including past years). But if that's really a problem OP than I guess I would buy a PS4 and get a decent laptop (you can always hide it in a backpack lol).

You only live once. My wife married me knowing that i'm a gamer. Limiting me in whatever capacity would be stupid and something she would never do.
Obviously, besides working, being a dad and doing house chores like a normal person, i don't spend money on much besides food and entertainment.
So the kind of "i have to choose" thing, i don't really get it.

But to answer your question: Don't. Wait for fucking black friday and get a deal on a ps4.

When it comes to gaming, it's all about preference so if a PS4 is more conducive to your style, go for it. The only real recommendation for keeping the PC however is if you have no other PC/laptop available for work purposes. If not, the good outweighs the bad in keeping the PC.

Situations like this depend on just how much you game and what kind of games.

When I was in my 20's my PC was my main platform for the most part. Just the amount of time I could play and the online on PC was way better.

Now im 35 and play a lot less games I would keep my PS4 over my PC. This year I have played SFV, Horrizon and a bit of persona 5. That and dipped in and out of a few other fighting games and a smidge of overwatch. I have barely touched my PC at all. So hands down my PS4 wins because of its simplicity, ease of use and suits my gaming needs.

Its one of those questions only you can answer because its so different depending on your own preferences and situation.

You should explain to your girlfriend that a computer doesn't count as a game console, because a computer is necessary for other duties. So, you can have a Switch, a PS4, and a computer that just so happens to be powerful enough to play games.

EDIT: Am I hallucinating? I thought you said something about a significant other...anyway, I guess if this is just for yourself, then...it's a hard choice. PC library is ever expanding, but if you want specific PS4 exclusives, then go for that. Eventually Final Fantasy XV will be on PC, but VIIR may or may not.

This is obviously the correct answer.

you may get a lot less than what you expect for your P.C so dont be shocked, as they decrease in value rapidly

If money is enough of a concern that you're considering selling the PC for a console, then you wouldn't want to sell the PC considering how cheap games can become on that platform.

You're better off buying a cheap PS4. The console limit seems arbitrary, and the only concern should be money spent.

Havent used my gaming PC or Xbox in months as the PS4 release schedule has been sublime so I can understand you asking because I fell the same.

I think if you are asking the question in the first place you perhaps should.

Keep your PC (you probably won't get all that much for it anyway) and get a PS4 too. A PC is not a console, so with a PS4 and a Switch, you've got your two gaming systems. Move the PC elsewhere if space is an issue.

I also think it's absolutely ridiculous that your girlfriend is setting a limit on how many gaming machines you can have. I don't think I could deal with someone that controlling. But that's just me.

You only live once. My wife married me knowing that i'm a gamer. Limiting me in whatever capacity would be stupid and something she would never do.

Yup. My wife knew all about my hobbies before we got married and this has never been a problem. I did make it a point to keep all my stuff in a single room, however, but that was entirely my own decision. I don't let my gaming/nerd crap spill out into other areas of our place, save for an NES Classic Mini hooked up to the living room TV.
