Should I stay *or* should I go.... Gaming Clan Drama

Alright GAF, it's Friday so once in awhile and off-topic gaming related thread is needed for a little fun. I'll let you all be my advisors in this little incident...


So, I have been with a PS3 gaming clan since RFoM, (my first MP game.) The clan itself has been together since Battlefront on PS2. At our peek, we had about 500 members between Resistance2, Killzone2, Socom and CoD.

I quickly ascended the "ranks" to be one of the leaders of the clan and really became real life friends with several members.

Well, to make a long story short, the founder took leave for a few years and told us to manage the forum and rosters and do what we had to do, so me and another guy pretty much ran the show for a few years. He took care of the website, and I used my people skills. Anyhow, the founder comes back and instantly issues a bunch of commands, freaks out about the changes that were made (which were for the better, IMO.) .
With that, my buddy decides to go off, build a new site for ARMA III (even pays for hsi own server), PS3/4 and anything else and brings another board member with him, and thus, maddness ensues, everyone bolts to the new clan.


Now, that leaves me caught in the middle of the battle for Middle Earth..... Should I run with most of my friends and leaders to the new site, with new opportunities but starting as a grunt, or should I stay loyal to a leader I never really played with much, but have long history with?

The third option is to just drop out of the shit altogether because I'm a grown adult and really don't need to deal with any of the crap anymore, however, I will miss helping lead, guide and being a mentor to some teens that really do just want someones ear at times regardless of how they get it..


So GAF, should I stay or should I go? Is there any kind of win/win here? do you have any crazy gaming drama stories?

Never understood the need for the formality of a clan for most games. Play with whoever you want to play with. Why does it matter if you're a Tier 1 General anyway? Can you make people run laps or get you coffee or something? Anyway, why would you want to be associated with a 'leader' that you don't particularly like (at least it doesn't sound that way) and a group of people that you aren't friends with? Give up the clan stuff or go play with your buddies.

It's gaming...just have fun with it.

Yeah, I'm more in it for just sitting back and chilling at this point. I want to enjoy gaming with friends... Clans are a good way to meet people and organize competitive events, such as MLG, but more and more I have been backing off of MP games and just playing SP games to catch up on my huge back-log. The kids are gettign older and I have less and less time to play with all of their activities. I'm leaning heavily for option #3, but I want to keep the peace, some guys can just be such whiney biotches about he tag next to your name online though...

this is what I'm torn between, I'll have friends on both sides, and of course, I'll have abotu 30 or so guys I recruited either fallow me, or split between the two...

If you are an effective leader then you will not be a grunt at the new site for very long. Go there provided that you are on good terms and friends with the guys starting the new clan.

My suggestion is to follow your real life friends. Maybe just step down from "leadership" and be a grunt if you want the social construct in your life but don't want the people management overhead that comes with leadership.
 
Isn't it better to just be a "grunt"?? All you need to do is play games and not deal with the BS.

Option 3 is the correct option.
 
Join the new clan, don't worry about rank, and let everyone know that your life is getting busier so you'll probably be on less. If you really want gaming privacy, you can also just make a new PSN name for those times when you want to play SP without anyone catching sour feelings that you're not playing with them.

In your own words you're a grown man with kids who are getting older. No one should have a problem with you taking time out with your life. As for the "too old for this kind of crap," I don't view clans as negatively as some here do. Some are bad but a lot are no different than the Gaf Clans/Friendlists/Guilds that get formed for games. Just a large list of people you have an option of playing with. Out of that list of names smaller groups usually form of people who play together often. I like that a lot more than randomly friending people you come across in games to invite later.
 
Why would you start as a grunt if you go to the new clan? Sounds to me like the leader of your current clan hasn't really done much over the past few years and wants to come back to the same position he held way back when. I would jump ship if I were you.

find a smaller group of mature gamers to game with. Mega clans can be fun but ...
 
Stop caring about rank and play with your friends. If you care more about your rank in an online clan than having fun with people you care about, you need to put the controller down.

Fuck how old you are. If its something you enjoy doing then continue on, sans the drama. Keep on keepin on and make the choice you feel will benefit your gaming experience the best.

Here is one of my nerd stories...
This takes place a very long time ago at the now extinct FFA (Family Fun Arcade) in SoCal.

Some dude was playing 3s against a friend of mine on a head to head machine. After he won the match he stood up on his stool, looked over the machine and yelled "get the fuck out faggot!" or something to that extent. I followed him out of the arcade about 5 minutes later and confronted him about what he said. The conversation went something like this.

Me: Hey dog, why the fuck did you call my friend a faggot?
Guy: I didn't call anybody a faggot.
Me: I was standing right next to him when you said that shit.
Guy: I didn't say anything to him. What are you talking about?
Me: Are you fucken serious? You stood up on your stool and called him a faggot? You got a problem with him being faggot?
Guy: Naw man, I dont have a problem.
Me: Fuck you puto (bitch).

The cat never said anything derogatory to my friend ever again. He never looked me in the eyes after that happened, and I would see him almost every weekend.

And yes, my friend is gay, and yes, I did used the word faggot. I know, it was a poor choice of words, and maybe I could've handled the situation with some tact. But looking back at it, the only thing I regret is that my friend had to hear that hateful shit.

Nothing wrong with clans and finding folks with the same problems/interests. I've been part of a over 25 clan for years. We don't beat each other up over losing and just have fun. Being out there alone sounds boring as fuck.

Yeah, I'm still really torn and have been killign myself over it because I recruited so many of the guys in question and I know many will follow me at the same time. I guess I'll have to make a press release on both websites to announce my intentions. Hell, I'll just have my own Lebron version of "the decision" Eiither way, it's not gonna come out perfect, lol.

I'm curious, what's exactly the payoff of joining a gaming clan?. I never joined one, and now I'm too old for that shit.
 
Go where your friends are and just stop talking to anybody else. Shit doesn't matter.

used to have so much clan drama back in the day ... and all of it could have been avoided if I was like "well guys, I'm gonna go play and have fun with my friends, have nice lives." Instead I willingly pulled myself into forum arguments, went back and forth crashing each other's severs (ie, going in there with other names and trolling them, etc)... it was ridiculous.

But it was also one of my fondest memories of videogaming. Those TFC and CS days. Alas.

Friendships, organization, and competitiveness (both MLG events and public matches) Going into a FPS with a group of competitive players that knows how to play together is a HUGE advantage.... I mean, we used to go whole night playing KZ2 willing every round of Warzone the entire time. Or even better, playing Resistance 2, we had two rosters full of 100 players, and constantly rolled with full parties of 20 and dominated every match. It also allowed for some of the greatest and best private games with clan mates, too much fun just going around Melee and granade only in RFoM....

The payoff comes when you've played with people for a while when tactics and familiarity starts to reach its peak, then you really reach a level in gaming that you simply don't get when playing with a few friends and definitely won't get by playing alone. Unlike when playing with your friends, then there's usually a guy who isn't really taking it serious, another one who is only on for 30 minutes and the last guy doesn't really like the game etc. however with a tight group of people who all joined a clan for a certain game, they are really passionate about it and that makes for a special experience.

It's really hard to put words on it, you just get a level of commitment, teamwork and pure gaming bliss moments that you simply can't get anywhere else and it's enough to put some effort and work into getting it established and maintained.

My best gaming moments comes from clans and guilds.
 
Been with a clan since Cod2 launched on 360 and really came into our own when R6V launched. Best group of friends to have when gaming competitively, hands down. Became real life friends with most of them because of this.
 
Mix of 2 and 3. If you have friends within that new clan, there's no point in just leaving them if you like playing together. But at the same time you don't *need* to be in the clan to play with them, right? Just play as friends.
 
How can he just come back after a year hiatus and resume a leader role? I don't understand that part. You and that one guy should be leaders now.

Can I join?
 
Option 6: get married, have kids, teach them how to shoot real guns, takedown terrorists, save president.

As an expert in MMO/Online Game drama, i can only give you this advice:

If a game starts giving you in real life stress, it's time to let that shit go. If you are paying money to get more unnecessary drama in your life, that's money better spent somewhere else.
