Silent Hill 2/3 Via PS2 on PS4: What Are The Odds?

I was just breezing through the PS2 On PS4 section of the PS Store and found myself surprised at some of the new additions. Thinking over how much I regretted selling my PS2 versions of Silent Hill 2 & 3 a few years back (just after the HD collection was announced but prior to release, mind you), I can't help but wonder:

Is there any chance in hell Konami would put Silent Hill 2 and 3 up on the PSN via PS2 on PS4?

I don't know much about the nature of Konami and the fiscal obligations they initially avoided with Silent Hill 2's original voice actors, nor the nature of how they eventually did seem to pony-up some cash for the original VO work on the HD collection. They sprung at putting Silent Hill 1 up on the PSN for PS3 and PSP (Vita supported through PS3 transfer), so surely this isn't out of the question, right?

Not impossible. Konami still does stuff like MGSurvive. I could see it happening.

I remember them having issues with SH2 HD since the finished build was lost. Is it still possible?

Would love to replay SH3, remember I found the character models really imoressive from a graphical perspective. Never got around to play the HD collection but from what Ive Heard I rather play the original

Considering we got that Suikoden game for PS3 just a while ago I'd imagine SH can definately happen if fans are vocal about wanting them.

This is my curiosity. PS2 on PS4 seems a bit simpler than remastering or porting.

Weekly thread

People ask about a PS2 on PS4 version weekly?

It takes too long to engineer the trophies for these games, probably

The process of adding trophies to PS2 titles is apparently simple thanks to whatever emulation they have going on. The flags added to acknowledge trophy triggering is light work.

As well as PSN titles, Konami have been decent about supporting Virtual Console games on Nintendo platforms; maybe there's something of a chance.

Yeah, didn't they lose a bunch of stuff for SH2?

The had to redo some of the music and stuff when they did the remaster.

I wish they could release all the PS2 Silent Hill games as PS2 Classics:
- Silent Hill 2 : Restless Dreams
- Silent Hill 3
- Silent Hill 4 : The Room
- Silent Hill : Origins
- Silent Hill : Shattered Memories
And why not start supporting PS1 games on PS4 so we can enjoy the first Silent Hill.

Not really. They lost the source code for the games.

I feel this bares repeating because it's what the thread is predicated on:

  • A remaster would require the source code and the like.
  • PS2 on PS4 does not. It's emulation.

The reason I suggest a PS2 on PS4 version is that it could circumvent the issues Konami had with the HD collection.

I hope it happens, but while the HD collection is pretty shitty, it's not unplayable anymore since they patched it. 4, on the other hand, is hard to get these days. I'd love to have SH4 as a PS2 classic. Insta-buy from me.

Guys, don't accept the "source code is lost" bullshit excuse. You don't need source code for PS2 on PS4 ports, and you don't need it for HD Remasters either. Bluepoint uses retail discs for their remasters, and Konami already knew this because Bluepoint had already done the MGS HD collection.

I mean if they wanted too, they could just half ass the trophies. If they would be that much of a problem. I don't think difficulty affects trophies more than what the price of the title is.

How the fuck can you loose the source code in this day and age? Yes, even for 2001. What a fucking nightmare of a company. Wish they'd just be wiped off the face of the earth.
Square lost the source code of the first Kingdom Hearts. Bad management or bad track of the servers can always happen even in 2016. I believe Maxis lost the source code of The Sims 2 due to a fire. There's always a reason this happens.

That 1up article with tom hulett and bluepoint games still gets me every time.
Link? Really curious about this!

Well, I hate to be a downer here guys, but I think the chances of this happening are low. Would I love to see it happen? Sure, I haven't played these games in their original forms for years, and would love to do so again, plus folks who have never played them could see what all the fuss is about without having to drudge through the mess that is the Silent Hill HD Collection. Is there anything stopping it from happening? Yeah, mainly Konami.

They don't need the source code for PS2 emulation, so people should stop saying that. I just don't think they care enough about their franchises or their fans to put in the minimal effort required to release these games as PS2 Classics. Pyramid Head Pachinko and spin-offs like Metal Gear Survive (I'm surprised Survive is even a thing, tbh) are about the best we can hope for from them in the future, I think. I'd love for them to prove me wrong here, but I don't expect that they will. :(

I'm willing to bet most gaffers keep a more solid backup of their computers than some of these companies. What a freaking disgrace, smh.

Konami doesn't give a shit about any of their properties besides MGS this gen.
So no. This probably won't happen.
They're even too lazy to bring over the MGS2/3/PW remasters from last gen. Everyone has done it except them. They just don't care.

Isnt SH2 ridculously hard to port due to how it was made on the PS2? Could be tough to emulate.

How does the PS2 version hold up when emulated on pc?

Konami doesn't respect their legacy games. Jim Sterling had some quotes from people who've worked there and basically that anything in the past doesn't get lauded.

This would be a dream come true for me honestly, but I still don't think it will ever happen. On a side note, where the hell are PS1 Classics on PS4, Sony!? Is there some technical hurdle that makes it impossible to emulate PS1 games on PS4 or something?

I think it a matter of no forward thinking and just no seeing a reason to preserve in the 90s/early 2000s.

Repolishing and retreading old games was pretty unheard of.

If I remember correctly the best way to play SH2&3 is the original PS2 discs on a backwards compatible PS3.
From what I remember scaling on these systems isn't all that great. Probably a PS2 with a good scaler connected to a TV will do wonders. Or hell, CRT through component!

Another SH thread. What the hell is wrong with Konami, can't they see there is pent up demand for this series? At least sell the rights if you're unwilling to revive it. Boggles the mind.

It's probably on actual hardware on a CRT.

I personally like emulation through PCSX2. You just stick your disk in an optical drive, make sure the FMV fix is on, and you're set.
