SimCity thread: the reason Sim Societies was made was because Will Wright wanted it?

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I just picked it up from TVTropes, but apparently he thought SimCity 4 was "too difficult", and thus he made Societies. Googling somehow just gives hints.

In any case, SimCity thread. I believe 4 is the best followed by 3000. 4 because of its more expanded use and difficulty, and 3 for... nostalgia.

Yup. Sim City 4 is the definitive version. SC3000 is awesome too, but I have yet to play Societies. Oh, and the iPad version is playable, but not quite.. enjoyable :(

I always found 4 and even 3000 to be a little more difficult than they should have been.

SimCity 2000 will always be my SimCity choice. I played the shit out of that as a kid and would leave it running all day only to check it after school.

I have tried from time to time get into 3000 and 4 but I always have a "just can't be fucked" moment after a short period of time.

I remember playing the original on a 386 when I was 8. Now that was some pretty raw stuff, but I was on top of it. I will always have a place for this series, close to my heart.

I love SimCity and 2000, only played 3 for couple of cities and never tried 4... I have spent like billion hours on SimCity 1.

I'm still a fan on the SNES version. Even have the title screen as my desktop.

Awesome music too.

4 is great and all- but it hasn't aged well. Socities was a big mistake for them to make- and I wish they continued with a Sim City 5 instead of dumbing down the series for no reason. Sim City is a type of game which will never have mass market appeal, in the icky casual sence, so trying to achive that is just ingreatful to all the fans the series has built over the years.

Uhh really? Better computing power and the massive community support have made the game all-but timeless, with no whispers of a possible successor.

Like I said, go blame Will Wright.

4 still has a thriving community.

Well, the lack of multi-threaded support really hurts it (and the Sims 2). It's my one complaint about the game. That long startup time is a killer.

Phew, I thought a SC5 would be a the dumbed down version of SC. SC2k remains my fav too, but 4 + Rush Hour is so good. That'd have gotten my monies for numerous expansions :/

I fucking LOVE SimCity 4. Love it.

And it was just yesterday when I was asking myself, why don't we get more of these games for console? Apart from the controller issue of course.

Sim City 4 with the expansions and fixes patches is one serious monster.

We really need a true "Sim City 5". I don't see how SimCity4 cannot be updated/improved. The game doesn't need to revolutionise, just build on top of SimCity4 wich is a fucking solid basis.

There's a store on the Citadel in Mass Effect 2 that plays Simcity 4 music. Couldn't believe what I was hearing when I heard it.

Well, Societies had ports.

Societies shouldn't be judged in the same category as the big city builders. It was far more a social engineering simulator than a city builder. I really dug Societies. A very relaxing game.

Actually, Will Wright wasn't tied to SimCity Societies. He did mention that a new 'easier'' SimCity game was in development in a previous E3 event, but he had no ties to it - too busy with Spore. Instead, the task was handed off to Tilted Mills.

I'd love for Maxis to revisit the SimCity franchise and restore it to its glory. Societies left a bad taste in many gamers mouth as it wasn't 'true' to the series. Unfortunately Will branched off to work on his Stupid Fun Club and Maxis is still with the Spore franchise with Darkspore. :)

Maybe one day!

Sim City 4 had the coolest soundtrack. God damn this thread I do NOT need to get re-addicted to this game again right now.

Please dont think I'm trolling this thread but you guys should check out Cities XL if you're wanting a modern city builder.

The traffic simulation alone makes it worth playing.

+1 - I'm really enjoying Cities XL 2011. It feels like a grown-up SC 3000 with about a zillion more options and it's got an almost perfectly balanced learning curve

I always thought Sim City 3000/Unlimited was my favorite. Couldnt really dig 4. Oh and the music to 3 was always hot, especially Sim Broadway.

Hug me.

SC3000 was my absolute favorite. Great music, graphics, and a SENSE OF HUMOR, which 4 lacked in spades.

What are the SC4 expansions and fixes?
I am really considering buying SC4 after reading this thread.
Also, what does the NAM mod do?
Thanks.

I think I had totally erased the existence of Sim Societies from my memory until I saw this thread.

I should reinstall SC4 one of these days. That game was rad.

They have to make another SimCity at some point. I don't think they need to go much further than what 4 presented just truly 3D. And it would probably sell better than they'd expect.

Although Tropico 3 (and soon 4) has been scratching that desire for a new SimCity. And of course there is always 4.

Wait, really? I skipped on Cities XL in the steam sales because I heard that Sim City 4 was the better game.

Are there genuinely mixed opinions on this?

SimCity 4 Rush Hour was the only expansion for SC4. Mods made the game fantastic, although I can't really speak on them as its been forever since I used them.

NAM is the Network Addon Mod. It adds so many new features regarding transportation and other much needed things. I highly encourage those to check out http://www.simtropolis.com/. If I recall, they even have SimMars, which transforms your SimCity 4 landscape and buildings to appear as a colonization on Mars. Always wanted to give that a try but hadn't gotten around to it.

I'm always intrigued about Cities XL, too. I can never get a general consensus answer on the title. It certainly looks terrific, but the online features were always advertised to be a necessary part of the experience and that's not what I play a relaxing city builder for.

Ah that's an interesting thing, thanks!

You CANNOT escape!

SimCity 4 was my high school graduation present to myself. :P

I don't think I'd call SimCity 4 "too difficult," but you had A LOT to consider when it came to population growth, and you depended on other cities for help as well. I always sucked at taxes though. And yes, the game was an amazing soundtrack, IMO. Always loved "Oasis".

I don't have a PC to play my copy on... but... the itch... Why, OP! Why!

Fuck yeah man, I still listen to the Sim City 3 and 4 OSTs all the time. Love em!

I actually found the soundtrack to 3000 at Good Will a few years back. "Hey, Sim City 3000... Wait a second, this the Sim City 3000 Soundtrack? Cool!"

Simcity 4 was definitely the hardest in the series but it wasn't too difficult. Having skyscrapers constructed in your city was a real accomplishment the first time you managed to do it. Simcity 2000 was almost a joke with how easy it was to build a huge megatropolis, that's not to say 2000 isn't one of my favorite games of all time it was just... easy.

SC3000 was the peak for me; SC4 seemed too suburbia-oriented and automobile-centric. I miss railway-only cities of the SNES version!

SC2000 was a lot of fun too; I played it like crazy on the family's Mac Quadra. Now can someone explain why Chicago Cubs first baseman Mark Grace was your fire inspector?

Its great nostalgia and everything, but the steam copy I bought during the last sale isn't as bug free as I wanted it to be. I am getting that well documented horrendous lag when I zoom in and out of the map. I've tried the usual fixes like forcing single CPU etc, but nothing works. Too bad neither maxis nor NVIDIA cares enough to fix these issues in the latest driver releases, ot makes me sad :'(

I guess it's a machine thing. Some copies work fine.
