Pretty awful news, but since when is 19th and 1st anywhere near L.E.S.?

Pop singer Gavin DeGraw was viciously beaten by a pack of thugs on the Lower East Side early today — and then hit by a taxi as he stumbled off, police sources said.
The 34-year-old crooner — who’s spent the summer opening for superstar rockers Maroon 5 and Train — had been drinking and just left a group of pals when he was attacked by the marauding perps sometime between 3:50 and 4:20 a.m. at 6th Street and 1st Avenue, the sources said.

He had his nose broken and suffered cuts on his face, they said.
The creeps then fled, and the dazed singer, whose hit song "Chariot" went platinum, kept walking, sources said.

He wound up at 19th Street and 1st Avenue, where he was struck by a cab, although not seriously, they said.

He remained in Bellevue Hospital tonight. The sources said the attack did not appear to be a robbery. DeGraw, who hails from upstate South Fallsburg, has a Manhattan pad. He and his brother also own a bar, the National Underground, on East Houston Street.

I heard about this yesterday. There is something really odd about this story. Something about it doesn't add up.

He's 34?

And it's not that weird that nothing was stolen. Vandals will break store windows just for kicks, too.

People generally don't just beat up strangers, even marauding perps up to no good at 4 in the morning; they'll at least try to get something from you if they are going to put in the effort to attack you. It's certainly possible this was a random act of violence, but even then, it's still very odd.

Something seems really odd about this. Coke deal gone wrong?

Drunk guy gets into a fight? Not really sign of a global decline in morality. Guy probably should have taken a cab.

Same thing that happens every night. It happened to someone who was famous though, so now it's big news.
him not getting robbed or shot is weird... usually one of the two is attempted... sometimes both!

Getting beaten up like this randomly is odd, it happens but the fact that they didn't take anything makes this weirder. Anyway I hope he's ok now.

two things don't make sense for me:

His bar is on East Houston and Allen, he stumbled to 19th and 1st and was hit by a cab? That's over a mile. Are we really to believe he was hounded for a mile through Manhattan?

What's the motive? He wasn't robbed.

No - it's just par for the course. The world is not going crazy.

As for him not getting robbed, my guess is that he did but didn't report it. As someone else suggested, maybe it was a deal gone wrong?

If hw was attacked randomly by marauding thugs I apologize in advance.

Here's another take on the story:

Singer Gavin DeGraw told NYPD cops he was assaulted early Monday morning after leaving an East Village restaurant.

Sources say the assault occurred along First Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets between 3:40 a.m. and 4:20 a.m., and police are now searching for surveillance video and witnesses who may have seen something.

DeGraw told police that several white and Hispanic men assaulted him, causing a broken nose and a fracture to the bone around his eye.

He then made his way to 19th Street and First Avenue, where he was struck by a cab. He was not seriously hurt from that incident.

A source says the "I Don't Want to Be" singer was highly intoxicated, which is complicating the investigation.

DeGraw did not initially report the assault to police, who learned of the attack only after being called by staff at Bellevue Hospital where DeGraw went for treatment.

DeGraw has been touring with Train and Maroon 5. They were scheduled to perform Tuesday night in Saratoga Springs.

DeGraw has a new album, "Sweeter," due out in September.

So in other words, he mouthed off to a group of people, got his ass beat, drunkenly stumbled in front of a cab, and somebody finally put his dumb ass in a hospital. Gotcha.

How is this an odd story? It was 4 AM and I'm guessing everyone involved was drunk. Not every bar fight needs to be examined for conspiracy theories and cover ups.

ITT: People advocating beating someone until they need to be hospitalized for "mouthing off" LOL!

I wouldn't quite say I "advocate" drunken beatings. But if you've ever spent more than an hour in a bar, you should have a pretty good understanding of what the limits are...as in how much you can drink, and what you can reasonably expect to say/do to a group of other drunk people without incident.

I, for example, would never be dumb enough to slug someone over a booze-fueled argument, but I am very aware that:

1. There are many people that happily will.

2. That group of people increases in size and scope the more intoxicated and beligerent you get.

and

3. A good healthy portion of those people frequent bars.

This is why it's critically important to understand how much alcohol you can consume before you start making poor decisions. You are gambling with your life and well-being every time you cross that point.
