Skullgirls back from the dead as season pass announcement reveals 3 more fighters after Annie.

While we knew Annie was coming since last Summer, and we got an announcement that another fighter was coming after Annie last month, there was still some concern new fighters would be contingent on Skullgirls Mobile revenue. Autumn blew that fear out of the water today by announcing a 4 fighter season pass starting with Annie, and the possibility of a 5th fighter being added to the pass for no additional charge. I'll admit $30 for 4 fighters seems pretty steep, but considering its all hand drawn and each previous character has always cost $10, I'm willing to pay it. Plus, feels good for my favorite fighting game to have a consistent stream of content coming out for it again

Yeah it's a little expensive, but the work per character is legit; I'll pick this up eventually.

They're definitely banking on the sales to carry them. I have interest but I'm not gonna invest over a long period of time. Game came out in 2012, if they added some new mechanics and dazzled it up a bit and said it's a whole new game it'd get more attention.

Who is the developer here? I thought the studio behind Skullgirls dissolved after the fallout between staff and its president following the release of Indivisible. What did I miss?

Guilty Gear killed this game
You know this is a team based anime fighter from 2012 right? Like yeah Strive plays great and is likely gonna be THE defacto fighting game until at least the next Street Fighter release, but this never had a chance of becoming that big. It's just kinda a niche product within the genre that I'm glad to see come back from the dead

At the very least it's the Skullgirls Mobile guys who worked with Lab Zero on Annie before it imploded. In the post I linked they mentioned they are working with someone else on this, but aren't ready to announce that yet. It's probably going to be Future Club though, since its the studio the major people at Lab Zero founded after Mike Z wouldnt just leave.

The ppl that left/got fired got offers from the publisher to keep supporting the development of the game, I guess they took it.

Hell yes! The dream of Feng/Black Dahlia etc back in play. I'm buying the season pass.

Black Dhalia feels like a shoe in, but Feng is significantly less likely. I'm personally pulling for Venus because I love her area denial gimmick and the lore surrounding her character, but I know she's a long shot.

Black Dahlia and Umbrella are a lock. I'm game for literally ANYONE else at this point beside Minette, I don't want a shitty Roll clone in this game bruh.
I feel the same way about Adam. I know his gimmick has been done successfully with Aria in KI, but the way he's described sounds so dull compared to every other character

Interesting. I'll wait until the whole pass is announced before deciding. Annie doesn't do a thing for me, certainly not enough to pony up more cash to unproven devs. MikeZ for all of his problems was at least a competent FG dev. It's been so long, I honestly don't remember who I voted for in the big roster vote they had years ago. I think Minette or that kung fu girl with no arms.

I can always count on you to give me a laugh with a shit take.

OT: Gimme Minette. She was robbed of her chance.
Guilty Gear seriously killed this game though.

With most fighting games going full 3D like Street Fighter and King of Fighters, there was a lack of 2D fighting games for some time.
Skullgirls filled that void temporarily, but it's character roster was far from being interesting and unique.

Guilty Gear and other fighting games developed by ArcSys just completely filled that void and killed any competition.

Before people say that Guilty Gear is fake 2D, whatever, it looks as good as if it actually was.
Plus, Arcsys character design is miles ahead of whoever is designing Skullgirls characters.

The fact you're using the art style to differentiate fighting games doesn't fill me with confidence that you know what you're talking about. Within the "2d fighter" (which is to say fighting games with no third axis, as compared to "3d fighters" like Tekken, DoA, and Soul Calibur) there are two main genres, conventional fighters, and hyper fighters. Stuff like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are conventional fighters which tend to be more grounded and focused on the neutral game, while hyper fighters are categorized by their massive combo counts and advanced mobility options.

Skullgirls is based on Marvel vs Capcom 2, which is considered to be one of the progenitors of the hyper fighter genre. Guilty Gear Strive is much closer to a conventional fighter, although it does borrow some qualities from the hyper fighter subgenre, "anime fighters", like the Burst gage and air dashes. So while there is some overlap, they cater to different niches within the fighting game community. Strive didnt kill Skullgirls, because Skullgirls was never its direct competitor. If you told me Strive killed KoF XV I'd say you're probably right, and if you told me Thems Fighting Herds killed Skullgirls I'd at least understand your argument. Saying Strive killed Skullgirls is patently ridiculous though

Don't care about Skull girls but I loved Indivisible, I hope we will see a sequel.
Sorry man, Lab Zero imploded and 505 owns the rights to Indivisible now. It looks like they're content to let Indivisible die as a franchise. The only reason we're seeing movement on Skullgirls again is Autumn put out a mobile fighter with gacha elements that made them bank. They ran out of characters to add so they commissioned more, and Annie caused their mobile revenue to go gangbusters.

The studio was in effect dissolved twice. First Reverge Labs, then Lab Zero.

Yup, now the major players, except Mike Z, have gone on to form Future Club. We don't have direct confirmation Future Club is involved, but it seems likely, especially since one of the Future Club guys was hinting at the character tease at the end of the Annie trailer before it even dropped.
