Thought this deserved its own thread.

PN: In Brawl, he had a large focus on history, with notably the Subspace Emissary: the first mode 'History' of the series. Are you going to propose something similar in the new Smash Bros. ?

Sakurai: in fact, we do not expect to include a similar story mode this time. As you already know, Smash Bros. has a large number of different characters, which were entitled to their own cutscenes in the story Mode. These were supposed to be rewards for players finishing this mode with each of the characters.

I think it was something fun for the players, but at the same time, all the cutscenes finally found themselves on the internet. Players watched them online, which was not really sticking with what we had originally planned. It is for this reason that we are not going to do something similar this time.

Nevertheless, we expect well introduce new characters with cinematics of introduction, as we already did for the villagers of Animal Crossing Mega Man or even the coach WiiFit. We have several ongoing collaborations to propose several cutscenes of this kind there.

More proof that Nintendo has never heard of the Internet?

I have a feeling this game will be underwhelming coming from Brawl. To be frank, the graphics jump to HD isn't as big as I hoped for, and even the title of the game breaks the tradition of "Super Smash Bros. [Adjective for fight]".

That's an amazing reason, but no story mode is good news.

Subspace Emissary was tripe from a writer who's done some solid stuff in the past. That and, well, it was just dumb.

I won't miss it, I forced myself to finish it. Once. I never ever played it again.

1. no it doesn't say they won't have a story mode, just not a "similar story mode" to SSE. SSE was generally poorly received.

2. they haven't heard of the internet? their reasoning for not including the story mode was the internet

3. the game is gorgeous

No but really, they confirmed the game will have a story mode, just not like SSE.

Seems more like some weird thought process of Sakurai rather than Nintendo being dumb.

I can see what he is saying, but it isn't a good reason at all considering everything that goes up on the internet.

EDIT: I'm glad it is going though. Waste of space really since it wasn't great at all.

Two games is hardly "tradition," and in Japan they've always had simple titles.

Smash Bros. DX
Smash Bros. X
Smash Bros for 3DS/Wii U

It's not much of a departure.

Are you kidding me? SSB4's Wii U graphics look stunning. Are you mad because you can no longer see the denim on Mario's overalls?

Daaaaaw. :(

I loved the Subspace Emissary.

Well, at least I hope they'll create some Mario\Zelda\F-Zero, etc. theme levels, like Melee.

That thread was discussing many different topics, and I wanted to focus on just Sakurai leaving out Story Mode simply because cutscenes will end up on YouTube.

Alright. It was stated before, but I suppose it makes sense since the original article was pretty huge.

The reasoning behind having all of the cutscenes available right from the start is, of course, ridiculous.

I think it's a great move. Brawl had a bunch of fluff. Worthless cutscenes, boring adventure mode a broken online system. It was Melee with slightly tweaked physics, it even looked similar. Any other game would have gotten blasted for bringing so little in a main entry title but the fanbase is so rabid that a couple new characters is more than enough

I have a feeling it's still largely going to look and feel like the same title 12 years ago regardless

“There will be a single player [campaign], but it won’t be like the [Subspace Emissary] mode in Brawl.
One thing we can do with the Smash Bros. series that’s unique to us – because we have all these different disparate characters brought together – is we can create that sort of fan-movie experience as a special gift. But now those things are posted on the internet, it doesn’t really become a gift for people who played the game.”

“What we decided this time around, we’re just going to have [those movies unlocked] from the beginning. We’re going to have a movie for Wii Fit Trainer, The Villager and Mega Man and they’ll be viewable right at the beginning, you can watch those right away.”

Translation: HD stuff takes more time than expected once again and the games would be out in 2015 with proper story modes.

What? Thats an odd reason to not have cutscenes in a story mode, those of us there on day one didnt go online to watch these scenes, plus wasnt that the fastest way to unlock characters.

I just hope subscpace emissary and its awkward repeat same bosses again mechanic goes away.

It's a dumb reason, but the story mode sucked in Brawl anyway. When it comes down to it I want all effort put into the multiplayer mode. I'm way more bothered by the 3DS version seemingly holding back the Wii U version.

Can't say i'll miss the story mode, but that is a really, really stupid reason.

Agreed. I do hope though that characters still have little ending videos if you're playing single player arcade. (Like in a lot of fighting games) Those are dumb fun and a nice cap to the play session!

This really didn't need another thread when it was already being discussed in the interview thread it came from. Also you turned it into a troll Nintendo thread so there is that too.

Translation: HD stuff takes more time than expected once again and the games would be out in 2015 with proper story modes.

It's being developed by Namco. I think they know their way around HD.

i think its just that they made a cutscene for each individual character assuming that people would beat it on each one so they could watch it but no one did it. the few that were curious just watched them online instead. why make all of that unique content that few can experience? i don't see the purpose either.

It's not much of a departure.
I would also assume they'll give it a different title later.

The story mode wasn't all that fun - or it atleast didn't justify its length. The story it tells is really fan-servicey and it's fun, but making an action/platformer out of those mechanics just doesn't fit. The short mission trials like in the first game work just fine as puzzles, but also as a way to improve your skill

But can we take a moment to enjoy the greatest fucking cutscene ever, all thanks to Brawl's story mode?

This game will be underwhelming because it lacks SSE (like Melee and 64 did) and because of its name.

Nohthing in this post made sense. Not your Nintendo online jab (which pretty much only made sense around when Brawl came out and not your comment that 1080p 60fps isn't as big a jump as you hoped for...

As someone who played through all of SSE on Intense over and over trying to trophy-ify every generic enemy in the game this is pretty good news

Uh why are some, including the op, assuming that the new smash bros isn't going to have some "adjective for fight" to it?

I thought the whole Smash Bros. for wiiu and 3ds were just placeholder titles, and that we'd get the subtitles later?

I don't have the opportunity to play this with my Smash Bros with my friends so this is bad news to me. :( No single player just makes it feel kind of bare bones.
