Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Review (PS4 version on PS5)

May 1, 2020
Posted this in another thread (but added more info here), but I think it deserves it's own thread. I don't see any Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 review threads.

Developer: CI Games (Wikipedia) (Polish developer headquartered in Warsaw)
Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, 2017 (PS4, Xbox One, PC),
Resources: PS4 Metacritic page / Digital Foundry Analysis (Youtube) / Wikipedia article

Follow up games in the series:
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts, 2019 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, release date June 4, 2021 (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC)

I started Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 last week, as got it for like $5 US off the Playstation store, for my PS5 (PS4 game though), and it's incredible. This game regularly goes on sale for such a low price.

First time playing this series, and never knew it was this good. Environment is amazing. Great AI. Enemy is very good at tracking you down and killing you, unless you use lots of stealth (either long range with silencer or sneaking). Go in guns blazing, and you will die.

Love the use of the drone to scout out an area, and mark your targets.

Great exploring buildings with tons of rooms. Very well realized world. Surprised how big the map is! Never expected that for some reason. Very complex environments.

One of the best games played in a long time. I'm going to pickup Ghost Warrior Contracts 1 and 2 at some point.

Didn't think this would be better than the excellent Sniper Elite 4, but I think it is.

First game that uses CryEngine that impresses me. Not too many games use it.

Almost did not get this, because of the mixed score/reviews on Metacritic. But I said for $5 US ($6.41 CDN), why not. First couple hours regretted my purchase, but after that, realized what an incredible deal I got.

It's 30 fps only, and really felt it at first, since getting used to 60 fps now on PS5, but after playing it awhile, I'm getting used to the 30 fps. Some small annoying bugs from time to time, and some textures could be better. Windows don't break which is weird (but can fire through them as if they weren't there). Long range view through the scope is excellent! Got a 500 meter + kill last night. :) Also, field of view seems a tad small (hated that at first), but got used to it. Expect that to be fixed on the Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 PS5 version (hoping it's more than just a PS4 port). Dialog is not going to win any awards, but it's OK with decent voice acted lines).

Initial loads can be very long on base PS4 hard drive, but was reasonable on my PS5 external SSD. Once in the world, fast travel is very quick.

There are multiplayer maps, and only tried it once, and it's a dead zone. Hardly anyone playing. Not really my bag anyway.

I was actually planning on getting Contracts 2 at launch when my friend mentioned 3 and Contracts being on sale so I grabbed both.

  • I'm about half way through 3 and so far it's been pretty fun, but no where near the Sniper Elite games.
  • The selection of weapons is good and how you can unlock them by finding them is cool.
  • Game is plenty buggy though (playing on PS5 btw) and there's been several locations I'll get to that have ? marks on the map, but once I get there the audio and dialogue from enemies is there, but the actual enemies aren't.
  • Sniping is extremely fun though, despite the overly sensitive enemies. It's either they don't notice anything or they immediately find your location.
  • The assortment of equipment and gadgets you can use is great and offers many ways to play. The major missions have tons of ways to approach and complete them.
  • The drone controls are pretty bad, and has a weighted feel that is weird.
  • Fast travel is basically instantaneous and provides your vehicle each time.
  • It plays/feels a lot like a Far Cry game, just with a smaller budget and emphasis on sniping.
  • For 5 bucks, it's easily worth it.
Haven't played Contracts yet, except messing around in Private 1v1 matches with friends. But I've heard it's more linear, but also improved. Here's hoping it's just as fun and I still plan to get Contracts 2 at launch.

Also, it should be noted that PS5 players CANNOT play with PS4 players on either game.

Wait this is City Interactive game?
Yes, the Sniper Ghost Warrior series is their first series after they stopped putting out garbage at a high rate. Basically their first series of them trying. It seems each game improves upon the last.

I was into it at the time when I saw it, bugs aside, but I played Sniper Elite 4 instead and I had just beaten Far Cry 5 as well so I had my fill of both those aspects too recently.
