So is Megaman dead now?

With the cancellation of both Legends 3, and Universe this leaves 0 Megaman projects in development at Crapcom (Megaman Online is still in development in Korea AFAIK). The Japanese side of the company has always believed Megaman was never popular in the west (that's a derp), and their actions of murdering a sequel to a much beloved entry in the west is proof this thinking still exists.

With the series' creator now gone, will they bother with the IP in the near future? I'd say probably not. Even when the Battle Network (and to a much, much, much smaller case in the Starforce games) series proved to be a huge hit around the world they still handled the IP poorly (pushing out yearly sequels, too many spinoffs and milking it dry), and with the only man who cared about the franchise gone, and the company showing signs it wants nothing to do with the IP, I'd say Megaman might not be seen until 20XX...

I think Megaman died when Inafune left. They might add him to a few things, and we might get some more spin-offs here and there.

But yeah, Megaman is pretty much dead. :(

Nah, it's too historically relevant to truly die. Someone will figure out what to do with it at some point.

But as a popular, high selling franchise? Absolutely.

Is it possible that whatever stakeholders have a beef with Inafune could be petty enough to dismiss any or all of his legacies? Or is this strictly business? I don't see how this is anything but bad for their fanbase... ugh, Megaman may get some sort of weird reboot like Bionic or DmC. Hmmm...

They'll probably keep making those shitty EXE and ryuusei games that the kids love, but that's it unless Capcom gets a major turnover in the managerial department.

What a joke of a company.

I don't know, but I find the idea really depressing. It's what really got me into videogames, it was my biggest fandom. I always took it for granted that it'd be there and now
the future is so uncertain it makes me sad ;_;

EXE is over, RnR is over, and their last attempt at milking them by doing an incredibly cheap cross over that was just an EXE1 port with like 30 minutes of new gameplay and the ability to use RnR Rock but only until almost the end of the game bombed. So no.

There are several titles in several popular and iconic games that have had projects canceled. The difference here is that those projects are often never shown off publicly like Universe and Legends 3.

Just because these two title titles were cancelled doesn't mean the property is dead.

I think you clicked the post new thread button a little too soon.

They'll probably keep making downloadable games with him but I don't see him getting his own retail game after what happened today.

I thought you said Crapcorn. That would make a great username, come to think.

It was dead before Megaman Battlenetwork on the GBA wasn't it?

Megaman, it seemed to me, never was a popular franchise. It had vocal fans, sure but it didn't seem hugely popular compared to other Capcom IP's.

This sucks but lets not let go of reality.

Legends was never ever a big seller and this was Inafune's attempt to give it one more shot because he loved the franchise.

This happened because they didn't believe it would make them money, the idea that they would throw away money because of Inafune's is nothing short of crazy.

there was Megaman 9 and 10 after it through.

but yes I don't think Capcom is going to be producing any new Megaman games any time soon and will probably keep the main focus on monster hunter, street fighter and resident evil.

For Capcom to announce something. This may not happen tomorrow or the week after though. It might take a little bit before they figure out what they want to do with Megaman next.

However, I admit, they could forgo the whole thing and just invest in handkerchiefs. At least a hundred dudes on NeoGAF are crying uncontrollably and Capcom can be savvy at times.

Not dead. I mean I'm sure we'll see a Mega Man 11 and whatnot in the long run. Mega Man is still pretty damn popular.

Legends, EXE, and similar shit however? Yeah that's dead

Capcom rarely ever did anything with it once the PS2 generation started. Even though Devil May Cry could essentially be retooled for a 3D Mega Man game, we instead got really shitty ones.

YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH!

Megaman lives on, inside of me. Us. So please Cra-...Capcom, make a battle network 7. Yes, I know, you said it was impossible, no ones want a battle network 7, but think of the starving children. Their tears!! The wails of the depraved! Give me Network 7, or give me death.

On a serious note, wtf man. My childhood is now officially ruined. Sonic, you're my only hope now. God, damn it.

Maybe it's for the better? Looking at how Capcom is now treating their top IPs like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, do you really want Megaman to also suffer the same fate?

I'd say Megaman at least died with some dignity. Sure, he was molested a few times (Battle Network and Shooting Star), but he hasn't yet been fully raped yet!

The Archie comic series just got off the ground, but that's probably a Capcom of America thing.

Go back to sidescrollers when the X series was in its prime. X1-X3.

Problem solved because your fan base grew up to these games.

Mega Man, Mega Man X, Zero, Ryu and Nina are crying in their dusty cell located in the dark basement of Capcom's HQ.

They released game after game after game after game after game and spinoff after spinoff and all of a sudden this franchise is not viable in the west? Smells like bullshit to me.
