I absolutely love this game. Best Advance Wars ever.

Drake + Hawke = Crippling death. >)

Dont understand the people who were bored with dual strike. The ony problem with the game is that it could probably be overwhelming towards noobs.

I actually wasn't a noob to the series. Been playing since the first on GBA. I just wasn't into the DS version. I still have AW2 on the GBA, though I don't play it. The game just came at the wrong time for me, had other stuff I was doing.

I love the Advance War games. My friends and I have spent alot of hours battleing each other on these games, cant wait till they make it online. I just hope they get rid of that dual strike crap, way too powerful and just a pain in the ass. There should have never been a special that gives both your COs a turn to battle on your turn and with their super CO powers on, thats just insane. In fact they should just get rid of the whole two COs being played by one player.

Yes, that's a rather obvious combo.

I must say, Drake is perhaps the most improved CO in AW DS
He went from having these stats in AW2:

CO Power: 4 + 3
Unit Price: 100%
Direct Vehicle: 100/100
Indirect Vehicle: 100/100
Planes: 70/100
Copters: 70/100
Direct Sea: 100/110
Indirect Sea: 100/110
Soldiers: 100/100

Other Info: Naval units have +1 Movement.

CO Power-Tsunami: Inflicts 1 HP damage on all enemy troops and
halves their remaining fuel.
+10% Defence, No Offence

SCO Power-Typhoon: Inflicts 2 HP damage on all enemy troops, halves
their remaining fuel and causes it to rain until Drake's next turn.
+10% Defense, No Offence

To having these stats in AW DS

CO Power: 4 + 3
Tag Affinity: Eagle ** (Green Typhoon/Stormwatch)

Unit Price: 100%
Direct Vehicle: 100/100
Indirect Vehicle: 100/100
Planes: 90/100
Copters: 90/100
Direct Sea: 120/110
Indirect Sea: 120/110
Soldiers: 100/100

CO Power-Giant Wave/Tsunami: Summons a wave that does 1HP damage and halves
the fuel of all enemy units.
+10% Offence, +10% Defense

SCO Power-Giant Storm/Typhoon: Summons a storm that makes it rain. Also does
2HP damage and halves the fuel of all enemy units
+10% Offence, +10% Defense

Tag Firepower Modifications:
Eagle: 115%
Jess: 105%
Hawke: 90%
Von Bolt: 90%

Sure, he lost the movement bonus from AW2, and he's no longer immune to the rain (I think), but air units became much, MUCH less crippled, and, instead of having merely a 10% defensive bonus for his naval units, he also now has a 20% offensive boost for them. And he now actually gets an offensive boost during his CO powers, too!

Also, the modifications to cruisers and the addition of carriers and black boats is a plus for Drake's naval strength.

He works with basically any CO, especially those of which that do HP damage or healing with their CO powers (Hawke, Andy, Olaf).

Even though he's 90% Tag power with Hawke, I find that they're an excellent tag team.

As far as I know, Drake doesn't have the 10% naval defense boost anymore. And I slightly preferred the +1 movement to the +20% firepower; I could go either way as far as offense is concerned, since I like direct attacks but also like turtling (Sami and Grit being my favorite COs, with their walls of mechs and artillery respectively), but the +1 movement just offered more variety since it also helped landers get around.

Still... I guess I could go with him being the most improved just for how awesome black boats are and how much cruisers own now. Not to mention that his attacks are even better than before because of the new unit dynamics; black boats that would have otherwise just been refueling subs now end up paying 2000, black boats themselves have low fuel and can end up fixing each other, enemy stealths end up in dire straits with their fuel getting cut, etc.

I hate how they nerfed his music and pose, though.

Also Sonja for various reasons, mostly revolving around the fact that she's fantastic with every CO other than Von Bolt. That and she can see in the fog Drake creates.

I preferred AW2 drake because now he's lost his movement bonus, defense, rain advantage, and his SCOP can even hurt him now.

I haven't had a chance to get back into this game due to heavy school schedule, but I have found a love for Adder, Kindle and Sonja.

The game, IMO, is very overwelming for a NOOB. Thank God I played the first 2 on GBA, they were my absolute favorite games on the system. Havent been able to get around to the DS version, though I do have it collecting dust. I'll get around to it eventually.

Having completely different missions when you play the game in hard mode surprised the hell out of me.

Gnee ? Not in the DS opus ?

I know I'll stop playing an Advance Wars only when the next one appears. I sometime leave it to play another game on DS, but I always return to it after. Spent probably more than 500h on the GBA games, already nearly 200h on the counter of the DS one, not counting reboots and power off...

But Sonja sucks, except when you tag her with Kanbei, cause then there's an automatic +15% luck bonus. :p

Personally, I hated his new music at first, but it grew on me. I think the problem with his new music is it's too soft-sounding and banjo-ish now compared to the old one. That, and the new trumpet midi sample sucks in the DS version (kind of like what they did to Colin's music)

Hawke's is still the best music though.

Drake's pose went from

Drake's music went from this to this

In the DS game, the mission are the same in both normal and hard mode, except that IA is better and has more units (or more powerful ones), which sometimes changes a lot of things, though. You don't have specific missions in hard campaign. What were you thinking about ? (there is three hidden missions, but they are in both modes).

(I found AW: DS far too easy, unfortunately, even if I can't get perfect-S on a few mission in war room in 1-player-no-bonus mode... Twin island and Risky duo, mainly. Any advices are welcome, by the way (but I'd prefer to avoid the use of "broken CO" like Hachi/Hawke) ;) IA is SO stupid sometimes...)

Hawke isn't broken.

Hachi and Nell still are, though. :lol

Sasha's theme is awesome in this game, I remember just listening to her theme the first couple of times I used her, doing nothing else.

Hawke's is also cool.. So caotic! I guess I like Jake's theme, but I used him so much I grew tired of it.

Advance Wars DS really had some awesome music!

EDIT: After listening through the songs in AW : DS, Olaf's theme SUCKS.

Olaf has been completely nerfed. Snow no longer hinders movement, so instead, olaf gets a 20% attack boost in the snow. To be honest, I'd rather have other COs' movements be hindered and his unhindered by the snow than have some extra firepower, because now, he's just like all the other pure strength COs. :/

Broken is maybe a bit exagerated. But it find it a bit more powerful than the others. All units have +10% attack bonus, and no weakness. SCO is a bit long to built, but it's very versatile.

Hachi and Nell still are, though. :lol
Hachi for sure... I usually don't use Nell in score attack because it's unpredictable.

It'll take a loooooong time. Things slow down a LOT after 200. And I have only S/A ranks, having to get numerous B and C ranks bugs me (defeats, too).

For the record, Sonja does not suck. Granted, her vision abilities are useless outside of FOW (where she's completely and utterly broken) but there's three things that make her a good CO by herself: no weaknesses besides the bad luck (which isn't so bad), the fact that she gets an extra terrain star by default (and more extra terrain stars with her COP and SCOP IIRC) which is a much greater advantage than you may think because of the way terrain defense is calculated, and her SCOP itself, which basically lets her attack first even on every battle the opponent initiates.

She's not a powerhouse, but she certainly does not suck.

You sure that the maps are EXACTLY the same? I don't have my game with me right now to check, but I could've sworn that a few maps got changed up. I wouldn't have kept playing hard mode if the only difference was AI and more units for the enemy.

Sonja doesn't get an extra star from terrain. the opponents LOSE an extra star of terrain.

Ie: in plains, there's no defensive bonus for the opponent.

I just looked this up, but apparently, there is NO TERRAIN DEFENSIVE BONUS whatsoever when attacking sonja. -1 when she's attacking you, 0 when attacking her.

Guess I underestimated her.

Still, I'd sooner use like 80% of the other COs before I use her, at least.

The first few maps are different on easy as they're training maps (or so I recall)

By the way, I picked up the Japanese version and I think I'm missing out on some of the secret missions as I can't read any of the hints in the briefing. Is there a guide that show's how to find the 3 secret missions? I think I found 1 of them at the end of a Drake level, but that's it.

AW: DS is the funniest of the 3 thanks to Jake and Jugger(sp?), the robot. :lol

imagine advance wars online. now i'll agree, it's pretty easy to imagine AW online - long games ended by disconnects, turns taking forever, frustration...

but imagine AW online with friends or good forum buddies. you have no idea how many times i've had the urge to play AW against a human opponent - I've played a few, but typically i enjoy doing other things that TBS games face to face. not having any real 3d or taxing software, In game Voice chat would be a breeze to implement :)

And here's precisedly why srpg online multiplayer is a bad idea,

and even friends cant stick around for too long, what if they have to go do something, or nintendo's unstable network drops them?

Id rather have uploadable replays and scoreboards like the tony hawk ds stuff.

Advance Wars DS was my first Wars game and I loved it. I felt the tutorials did a good job getting you accustomed to the feel of the game. Although AW was pretty easy compared to the bad mutha of all turn based strat games: the Combat Mission series on PC.

I don't understand how people are saying this game is overwhelming for a noob. Not only had I never played an Advance Wars title before DS, I don't think I ever played a turn based strategy game before. And, while I wasn't godlike at AWDS, I did sink in more than 60 hours and loved every second of it. It starts out slow enough that anyone can play it, and there are enough modes that, even if you're stuck on something, you can find plenty of challenges more to your skill level. Just a fanstic game all around. Can't wait for AWDS2.

As much as I love the AW series I'm inclined to agree with you in that AW's plotlines and characters are way too lighthearted and nonsensical for a modern warfare TBS. I remember when I first got the orignal Advanced Wars and my initial reaction was "Wow, this plot is painfully stupid, yet I can't stop playing it!" 4 years later, that sentiment's only intensified now that the series is the home to such engrish gems as "Dropped like a phat beat!"

If the Daisenryaku (or however the diddly-fuck you spell it) series were to ever make it stateside, I would buy that and never turn back.

I seriously couldn't believe how much content was in this game. Even after beating the rather long campaign, there was so much more stuff I actually wanted to do (not counting the retarded Combat mode). I got tons of time out of this cartridge, it's the only game I played on any system for quite some time.
