so Killzone sorta confirms it; PS4 aims at 1080p/30fps. Expected? disappointed?

I honestly thought they were gonna pull a 720p on us again, so I guess its still better than expected, but the 30fps thing (wich im sure will have some exceptions with racing games and such) does make me look away and confirms what will probably still be a PC-only future for me.

Thoughts?

Probably using 4GB GDDR5 though on their devkit since it looks like 8GB GDDR5 was a very late addition. But I think 1080p/30fps will be the majority of games, first party at least.

KZ always has a ton of stuff going on all over the place and it's a launch game. I highly doubt they'll finish the PS4 off at just 30fps.

I would expect fighting games and racing games that don't have as much going on will be able to push higher than 30fps around launch as well.

I think I'm the only person on earth that hates 60fps. Every game I see that run 60fps loses any and all cinematic feel. It's this bizarre smoothness that alway makes me a little nauseous.

I am pretty sure there will be some titles that would be 60FPS like whatever Platinum Games are making for the system, and like wise some developers simply won't go above 30FPS, whether they lack the talent to do it or they want to sacrifice it for visual fidelity.

Also I bet that Watch Dogs PC was under spec, + alpha/beta version so when it launch both games should run a lot better.

nothing wrong with 1080p/30fps

i'd prefer 60fps, but if they have to knock it down to 30 to achieve whatever they're trying to achieve, i'm totally OK with that because in most cases it'll benefit me in some way (moar graphics! moar effects!)

Surpassed my expectations. I thought for sure everyone would go for 720p/30fps again to push as much graphics as possible. Maybe as the generation goes on and people really crack the ps4 open we'll see a lot more full 1080p/60fps games.

This doesn't "confirm" what "the PS4 aims for." Sony is (thankfully/brilliantly) making the PS4 all about developer choice. That's what it aims for, and Guerrilla is aiming for dem graphixxx, not dat framerate.

I'm disappointed in Killzone, but beyond excited and hopeful for the console.

I bet money Knack runs at 60 and like butter.

I expect a fair amount of 1080p/30fps at the start and then for first resolution, then framerate to slowly drop over the course of the generation.

Basically this. We'll start at 1080p and we'll see that drop to probably no lower than 720p towards the end of the gen.

How anyone would be disappointed with that?

They can easily go 60FPS if they lower the resolution.

In fact, I hope they do it.

Single player: 1080P 30FPS.
Multi player: 720P 60FPS.

Considering the RAM bandwidth they can throw in some godly AA on the 720P games to make then look good enough.

well yeah, as you said Guerrilla aims for a technically impressive game, and this is what they could do. I mentioned exceptions in the OP

I've long accepted that I value 60 fps far more than most developers do, and that developers even see it as desirable because of its cinematic qualities (cinema film is shot at 24 fps while low-budget TV shows like soap operas are shot at higher frame rates, creating a cognitive association between smooth, high frame rates and low production values).

I know these kinds of weird, crazy arguments exist, and yet I still feel the urge to kick a puppy every time I see someone using them for real.

Guerilla said that Killzone 4 will have a 2.5 years development cycle so they will have had to go on a roller coaster of incomplete and constantly changing development kits.

The game would have started development when Sony was targeting 2GB.

I care more about resolution, 30fps doesn't bother me for the majority of titles, so this is great news.
