So what do you DO in Sea of Thieves?

...I'm willing to bet Yooka-Laylee sells more than Sea of Theives and is better recieved. And I say that as someone who really wants Sea of Theives to do decently well.

Of course, there's also the possibility that it doesn't and the game is a technical disaster (frame-rate ain't looking so good).

You said people have played it and praised it I said the same happened to nms? They can show more in fact Im not the one comparing it. But if it is indeed supposed to be a Q1 title yes I would like to see what they're talking about.

At the very least quests are In so it's not a simple here's the world have fun type of thing

They haven't given me anything good in awhile to have faith but the title looks good so far yes

That's good to know, I always thought this was MS's answer to Destiny (along with Division) considering Destiny has a few trivial PS exclusives. I thought I read something about a survey that asked questions that were similar to the Destiny experience of quests/progressions

Is "What do you DO in X?" a meme, now? I hope it is.

The lack of RPG elements, skills and stats is a definite plus for me. I'm hoping there's plenty to do outside of the ships, roaming around on land and such. And, similarly, that what you can do outside of the ships isn't woefully underdeveloped. Oh, and that it runs well on PC-er, W10.

To clarify not my personal view, just what I assume what the point was you were referring to.

Your point is valid and I never disagree. All I'm saying is that the old employees of Rare are also most gone and there's a new era of Rare which exists as Rare.

Reading the article reinforced my mind on how SoT is in my top 3 most wanted games for next year.

I don't know anybody with an Xbox One though, so I hope we'll assemble a Gaf crew !!

Because people playing a structured short demo or those who are essentially in the marketing scheme are going to give you the full picture?

No the difference is they aren't making grandiose promises, they are doing the opposite essentially withholding pretty much all information as to how the game actually works beyond boat battles.

This is what I was getting at. As someone said, Rare don't have a history of lying about their games so no need to draw NMS comparison, it's flimsy and desperate at beat.

This is Rare? I thought the core Rare team left years and years ago...this is the Rare that were making kinect games.

Some of the oldest members of Rare are working on SoT. Infact the father of Banjo is directing it, it's his dream project.

Probably good for you to research Playtonic, a good portion of Kinnect Rare are working on Yooka Laylee.

This game looks really fun but it just seems too reliant on always having a group to play with so I probably won't be getting it.

I think this has cross-play with PC. That's how I will play it if I do. I'm not too keen on games that require a group to have the most fun though. I like to play solo most of the time.

There are still some of the old guard at Rare, in fact I can't think of anyone I'd be wanting to head up this game more than Gregg Mayles and he has been there since pretty much the beginning.

And of course its not going to be the 'same Rare' as when the Stamper brothers were running things but that was over 30 years ago, lol.

Can't wait for the inevitable exploitation of mechanics by ne'er do wells if there is open pvp in this game about pirates and being thieves.

I hope it turns out good, but I could see this game ending pretty badly.

Doing world PVP in a natural way is incredibly hard. You have to include world elements and factors that promote and subsequently penalize PVP dependent on the situation. Do that wrong and you over incentivize one type of behavior often destroying the other. It's why the Dark Zone in the Division is so deeply flawed and games like Rust/DayZ just turn into KoS bigger group wins game dynamic.

A huge factor is PVE integration of elements and enemies to be a constantly present danger, so players have to think about the environment as well as other players which changes how they may engage in PVP. PVE in these games generally has to come first, with PVP being an intermittent force that makes the game more dynamic. The problem is so many people just want to go around blowing everyone up, that it kind of falls apart usually.

The Stampers were running things as late as 2007. Well, technically, Microsoft was the one running things at that point, but the Stampers were still there until 2007.

boy some people hate it when you mention rare might have passed its heyday.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that Sea of Thieves won't be gamey enough for many, hence the price point

No NPC ships sounds disappointing for me. It'll be great if the game is a huge success with lots of players around, but it'll be losing its players at some point, whether you like it or not. And what will happen then?

Also, ship battles with boss NPCs would be awesome. Especially if they're equipped with special weapons and technology. And you can loot them after you beat the boss.

People hate shit posting and repetitive posts on who Rare is rather then focusing on the game. What does the makeup of Rare employees got to do with the mechanics of SoT? Who cares, we're here to discuss the games merits .

the developer's history should play a part in discussion, but I can see your point. it's a fine line with games that are pretty far out. the shit posting will start in earnest after release

Rare IS past its heyday, but that doesn't mean it can't make good games. We're not annoyed about people saying they're past their prime. We're annoyed about people making it seem like Rare won't ever be good again just because they have new people working there. Which doesn't even make any sense at all.

Did you know that 8 out of 10 people from the Goldeneye development team weren't just new to Rare, but new to the industry completely? Goldeneye was made by an inexperienced group of people and look how the game turned out. One of the most revolutionary games of all time. Sometimes hiring new people is for the better. Maybe Sea of Thieves will be the same way.

I mean, by that token, can we say that studios like Naughty Dog and Retro Studios are "shadows of their former selves" as well? Nobody's there from the "old days" either.

I'm genuinely excited about Sea of Thieves, despite not really being into MP games that much.

I really enjoyed my time with the Division, because it struck a balance which allowed me to do my own thing a lot of the time and rare seem to be pushing this too, with the smaller single person vessels.

Probably more so than the Division though, this game looks like you'll need to actually chat over the mike to do well, which is always a barrier to some. Looking for Clubs will hopefully help in this regard, but there will be some simply unwilling to play that way.

As to the Old Rare/New Rare thing. Rare was always known for innovation and doing something new. It's nostalgia that seems to have linked them more with mascot 3D platformers more than anything else. As much as I think YL will be well received, there's no doubt that Playtonic are lifting wholesale a format from years ago, with little in the way of innovation. I guess as a smaller studio there's less room for risk taking and they have sniffed in the wind a nostalgic desire for this type of game. Fair enough, there's room for everyone.

That said, it's SofT that is continuing the Rare tradition for innovation more strongly than YL.

I mean its fine if there's genuine curiosity about what teams are making these games, it's something that does come up to help with confidence, but UK is full of talented game creator's and Rare is still one of top studios to work for so, in that sense we could still see something special from them, but the topic is really dated now and seems to grate on people. We'll let the games do the talking.

And the poster above makes a good point about previous teams at Rare.

I'm so hyped for this game, and so glad I just bought an Xbox One S so I don't have to skip it :)

Everything about it just sounds fantastic and fun so far; really fresh and different, lots of cool ideas and concepts. I just hope it all comes together (and soon).

2017 is officially the Year of SoT and LoZ in my house.
And NX. Maybe

This game just looks FUN... not withstanding my usual concerns about being stuck relying on other people... but they've said you will be able to do single-crewed boats...

Really enjoyed my brief spells of hands-on time with it - my reaction was exactly like the people in the E3 video.

Played this during the Gamescom and it was the best experience I had there. Manning the ship with friends is gonna be awesome!
From the bit I played there, it seemed to be going into a F2P direction - is it known if that's the case yet? Would be fine with me, it would be extremely unlikely to convince 4 other people to buy something on the windows store and I would most likely be more versed to that as well.

Are there Clan-ships as well? Would be awesome to have a boat that we could upgrade through questing but only together...

I didn't really have that much interest in it at first but everything I hear about it sounds really fun and promising.
I also believe the company known as Rare, regardless of whether they are the same talent of old, are still very capable developers.

The lead designer on Sea of Thieves, Mike Chapman, just made a great post on the official forum delving deeper into the hand to hand combat and their approach to weapons.

https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/2197/our-approach-to-personal-combat

I personally like how they are going to be handling the guns at the moment. The idea of them by default not being in threatening state should help with with most encounters in games like this start with a fight right away.

I mean, that doesn't sound bad tbh
If they can execute the gameplay then I may pick up an Xbone again.

There are already games like this in the same vein. Guns of Icarus and Blackwake.

What supposed to set this apart from the others is that they're selling the fact that you can roleplay as a pirate, hang out with friends and find treasure. That's the part they're using to trick people until they convince me with actual gameplay of those features.

Until they show something more, it's a 4v4v4 ship pvp game.

Yea that's what I'm seeing at the moment. You can roleplay as a pirate and go to some islands but the main game will be less exploration and more ship battle.

I would love to see more of what the game has to offer and it sounds like they understand that eyes will be on them to show proof of concept.
