So what happened that made NeoGAF irrelevant (according to Digital Foundry)?

Clip from their recent HL2 comparison video.

I've been around since the PS360 era. I know there used to be more industry folk on here (I think), but this place seems way less toxic than it used to back then. And I think our gaming discussions are much better now than they used to be, for sure!

I dunno, seems like this forum still does pretty good numbers and content to me. 🤷‍♂️

The house is clean now.
Plus There was also some hiccup's on certain videos which people had issues with. They had issues with some comments if I remember correctly.

There's no way this thread stays open (meta commentary on the forum itself isn't really Gaming related), but the loss of industry discussion - that you really can't just casually brush off as "Oh, I know there were some industry types who peeked in now and again" is being really disingenuous given how much news actually broke in those forums either directly or indirectly through the casual conversation regular forum users had with developers - absolutely hurt the forums place as THEE place for gaming news and discussion.

. . .it is now A place you go to, with a community is far more insular than it ever was.

Because they don’t use it makes it irrelevant, dontcha know.

Are you saying NG has the same cachet it had in say, 2015? Really?

Game forums aren’t the loci of fandom in vidya the way they used to be. It’s mostly olds that still use forums. Nowadays devs, leakers, etc. can post their thoughts on twitter and it reaches a much wider audience instantly. Zoomers and what not use discord not forums.

I think John used to post here, no ? Maybe he had a bad experience ? Still I find it pretty low to say something like that, but whatever.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
The woke mob tried to cancel GAF, but since the site was always independent and wasn't beholden to advertisers or other interests, they didn't get their way. All they could do is cry like babies, post pornography, and DDoS the site. Since the gaming press all leans in their favor, lots of hit pieces were put out telling people that NeoGAF was no longer relevant. All this happened when forums were already dead or dying in favor of Reddit, Twitter, and Discord.

These same butthurt weirdos made their own site which (hilariously enough) is now beholden to advertisers and other interests.

Well this is why I posted this thread, to see another perspective. I wasn't being disingenuous. The way I remembered the forum is very different from the apparent impact and exclusivity it had back then.

But then that still leaves the question of why, doesn't it? Why was it "THEE" place then and no longer now?

Are we just ignoring the mass exodus from this forum and the fact that the userbase is a mere fraction of what it used to be?

I enjoy these boards but it's true that they don't have anywhere near the type of influence they used to have.

He's not really accurate at all, GAF was most "relevant" several years later than he's talking about, circa 2013.

But so were a ton of other sites. The internet was a very different place a decade ago. Traditional forums like these are old hat now, but people like us enjoy them for what they are - messages are displayed in order of posting by default, not ranked by how popular the opinion is which only serves to push others to the bottom. You don't have to pay $8 a month (or previously just, have a following) for your opinion to look more "valid" than others either.

I think this site is quite active and am happy with the level headed mods and userbase.

Resetera is full of furries and girlymen.

When John used to be on here the poor guy was constantly hounded by a handful of fanboys on every post he made, I don't blame him for leaving here.

Fair enough.

As to the why, I mean you can Google "ResetEra forum history" and see all the gory details. Again, not really sure that's a topic for here (possibly Off-Topic if at all) or if its worth digging up, but the current form of the forums (including its relevance) is not by accident and certainly didn't happen " - when no one was looking."

I think John used to post here, no ? Maybe he had a bad experience ? Still I find it pretty low to say something like that, but whatever.

I mean, you can poo-poo him for the dismissive way he said it, but - as an "industry type" - it's not shocking to see his point of view of other industry types aren't around to engage with.
