Definitely Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. But I also want to shout out Jedi Fallen Order. There were a number of locations that looked gorgeous and made me think that they truly captured the feel of the concept art.

Breath of the Wild - When you run out of the cave and see a whole new world. Seeing the towns and landmarks far in the distance and how far you will be traveling there. The Great Plateau, Akkala Citadel, Kakariko Village, Gerudo Town, Zora's Domain, are just several of many, many highlights.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - Absolutely beautiful.
Assassins Creed Origins - Ancient Egypt brought to life. The cities, the farmlands, it felt like a living breathing world. In the opening scene when you fight some dude to the death and fall into the grand sand filled halls of a ancient temple. Nevermind looting exploring all the famous and not so famous tombs (even the mystery of the sphinx.)
Horizon Zero Dawn + Frozen Wilds - A smaller scale map then the other mentions. Still has incredible stuff like the plateau city of Meridian. The Expansion goes even further.
Dark Souls 3 - As mentioned by others before.
Witcher 3 - Ditto.
Uncharted 4 - Ditto.
Jedi Fallen Order - Some of the planets and tombs are just insane. Here is a Star Wars game that can invoke that sense of mystic wonder exploring for a lost mcguffin just like KOTOR.

This generation has really been something else, despite its numerous flaws.

Whoa, never heard of these games. I might give them a go sometime, based on those screenshots.
Just be aware they might be something you could not like. Elite dangerous is basically a mmo and deep rock galactic has a strong focus on coop (although its possible to play it alone). Black mesa is probably your best shot since its basically a Half Life remake.

RDR2 still blows me away. Especially that moment when you can tell a storm is developing. Constantly wowed by that game.

I spent a lot of time in Fallen Order looking around at the view.

Can you charge up the slapping button?
Can you do rapid slaps?

Sorry for all the questions.
Dude its VR, you don't "charge" anything, you wave your hand at the strippers ass and *whack* it makes a sound and jiggles.
Yeah you can do rapid slaps. Gentle or hard.
You can also use a cash gun and shoot them with dollar bills. Its great!

NSFW!!!!!!!!!!! VR tits and ass. and a slap.

Arkham Knight blew my fucking mind when I first played it. I remember audibly saying "Now this is fucking next-gen". I don't think I ever played anything with such polish, refinement, smooth animations, little details, and graphical fidelity up to that point. IMO it was the most beautiful game of all time back in 2015. And the art-style was just gorgeous, the mash of neon and gothic/noir for Gotham was just perfect. It was exactly how I envisioned my ideal Gotham City (Probably due to my love of Batman: Forever as a child). It was so impressive to just fly about in the rain exploring the city.
I picked up this, The Witcher 3, and Bloodborne on the same day after not being able to game for a while. Needless to say, my reintroduction was glorious.

Yeah, it's really crazy to be playing games in 2020 and still look back at Arkham Knight and go, "How the fuck does that still look good?" because it truly does.

That game was ahead of its time, graphically.

Lovely to see some Switch in here.

Obviously not 1/10th the visual fidelity of the others, but... the games still have the same effect on me at times. Something like staring for miles into BotW's artistically gorgeous landscapes, is just flooring, especially when playing portable.

People don't hit that angle enough. As a portable, Switch is fantastic tech, and well beyond my expectations for handheld, particularly one as small as the Lite.

Seeing the upper plate from Sector 7 slums for the first time was the best moment this generation. You never got to see that in the OG, so having to see it for the first time was a sight to behold. I was sitting in front of the TV just taking in the scenery and music for a good ~10 minutes. <3

Sigh.

Okay, i'll definitely play FF7R after Ghosts of Tsushima.

I got caught up with reading the games leaks and that really put me off, but after playing TLOUP2 despite knowing full well what the leaks are, I still loved the game and actually found the story beats that got us to where those leaks showed us actually really well done.

So i'm hoping that the same will happen with FF7R - i'll play the game and watch the story unfold myself and see if my judgement's based off the words of others is to be thrown aside, or stand true.

Pretty much all the games are just normal environments with high fidelity graphics, nothing really special. The only games that impressed me graphically this gen are Octopath Traveler and 13 Sentinels.

Fortnite because everything in the environment has meaning to the player. Most (all?) of the environments in single player games are dead and only serve as wallpaper to shallow game design.

Anything from Uncharted 4. I think the game looks better than TLOU2...
So do I. I'm.not sure if it's the film grain or just the grimly ugly environments in TLOU2, but I've been very underwhelmed by its graphics.

Uncharted 4 I'm still wowed by like 80% of it, that's just not the case with TLOU2.

Other stuff to have really impressed me: The Lost Legacy, Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon, the new Modern Warfare.

And from the looks of it, Ghost of Tsushima will be maybe the best of all.

While the game has some inconsistencies in some places FF7R made a huge impression on me from the first minute. I felt like I was 11 again and that opening reactor especially put a huge smile on my face. I just sat there and said “you guys nailed it... you fucking nailed it.”

Red Dead 2 is my fav. The detail of this game is on another level at least on xbox one x
Titan fall 2 on the level where they are building houses I believe and you are wall running though it.
Horizion Zero Dawn the wold was so detailed where it was the old world mixed with jungles etc
Halo 5 on one x the level with the 2 elite statues was very pretty.
uncharted 4 where the clock is falling
Resident evil 7 in VR entire thing. My first VR experience
Forza horizion 4. The world is just beautiful
Gears 4 the Level with the Tomatos and the wind flair
The witcher 3 is right there with red dead the world is a treat in itself

Sorry no pics. At work right now

Rikkori Rikkori , is that modded? Stunning.
Same question as @bender , is that modded? I've got it installed on my PC via Gamepass, but I wouldn't wanna play it in any lesser graphics now that I've seen that :eek:
No, not modded, though there aren't any real graphical rehaul mods out there anyway to my knowledge. The pics above are simply high-res at 6880x2880, but that's excessive for a 4K screen and not really important in this game - I actually end up playing at 1800p. You can, and I do recommend, messing about with the settings in the ini though, at least for minimising pop-in/lod transitions. And also never put shaders above medium - it's super performance heavy and has no discernable visual impact, and I would honestly recommend the same for game effects, particles, physics, and water details. If you ever get shadow flickering and want to get rid of it, mess with (e_shadowsmaxtexres, e_shadowspoolsize).

Here's my normal playthrough user.cfg:

cl_fov 85
r_TexturesStreamPoolSize = 8192
sys_budget_videomem = 8192
r_TexturesStreamingMaxRequestedMB = 2800
r_texturesstreamingDeferred = 1
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyEnabled = 1
r_TexturesStreamingMipBias = -3
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyThrottle = 0.8
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyTime = 120
sys_budget_sysmem = 15000
sys_streaming_in_blocks = 1
sys_streaming_requests_grouping_time_period = 1
e_PreloadMaterials = 1
sys_PakStreamCache = 1
sys_preload = 1
r_ssdo=1
r_ssdoAmountAmbient=1.4
r_ssdoAmountDirect=2
r_ssdoAmountReflection=4
r_ssdoHalfRes=2
r_ssdoRadius=0.04
r_ssdoRadiusMin=0.07
r_ssdoRadiusMax=0.1
e_svoTI_SSAOAmount=1.545
e_svoTI_SpecularAmplifier=0.82
e_svoTI_TemporalFilteringBase=1
e_svoTI_MinReflectance=0.19
e_svoTI_DiffuseAmplifier=1.12
e_shadowsmaxtexres 1536
e_shadowspoolsize 6144
r_shadowsadaptionsize 1.0
r_TexMinAnisotropy 16
r_TexMaxAnisotropy 16
r_sharpening 0

Oh and a fun thing is, you can actually directly load console configs if you ever want to know what those are like. A great feature for any game to have imo, tho not recommended to actually use. :D

These days games have very impressive environment.

Horizon Zero Dawn is exceptional in this regard.
Games like Shadow of the Colossus and The last Guardian are also pretty strong.
Also probably every recent AAA/open world games that I haven't play yet.

But nothing is as strong as these last gen environments for me :

Graphically it's of course completely outdated, but the atmosphere is just... Art direction is just superior to high powered graphics for me.

As bad as the game was, I still think it has the best interiors and exteriors environments this generation, specially considering it's an open city.

Yeah, the series has never looked this good again graphicly IMO. Also, unpopular opinion, but for as "meh" as this game was I personally think they should've stuck with this direction for the series because it finally felt like the formula was maturing and they were starting to nail things like stealth, parkour, and difficulty of combat IMO. It just felt like the natural evolution of Assassin's Creed compared to whatever the fuck these weird Frankenstein mash-up of genre entries are supposed to be.

Unity was basically a next gen plus game, considering it couldn't really run properly on base consoles. Wasn't it developed with the idea that the consoles would be significantly more powerful than what we got?

Would explain why it still looks so good on PC.

I remember the crowds, whilst looking fantastic, just couldn't work on the current console hardware as intended. those were some dense ass crowds though. Gotta give them points for ambition.

I forgot two -

Control - Manages to make brutalist architecture beautiful. Channels pure 80s and 90s sci-fi. You even have a region right from Stranger Things
like the Upside Down with the mold.
God of War - When you go up a gigantic mine shaft
and see the remains of a ancient Dwarven City.

The division. Had never seen such a close replication of new York before and seeing how each mission is a different building or area is just awesome. I'd say a lot of the missions in division 1 and 2 are very memorable whereas I don't remember a lot of missions hzd or spiderman for example.

Final Fantasy 15. It might not have been the absolute best-looking, but there was something about that first zone with a lot of desert and little rundown towns and stops along the way that really found a connection with me. I used to take road trips throughout the Southwest part of the country and it caused some serious déja vu. Really did not want to leave that area while I were played.

oh wait, how can i forget monster hunter world, that game as some wonderfull locations.

I was JUST about to make a post of it since pretty much everything else I can think of had been posted. and MHW's environment is not only eye candy, so much goodies from minerals to herbs for crafting and consuming, to environmental traps like boulders and vines to help with the hunt. it's also an actual living environmental, since all the smaller creatures will be living interacting there and you can even capture rare ones to bring back as pets in your room.
