Numbers are coming in pointing solidly towards the Nintendo Switch coming off an internationally successful, damn near record breaking year. In fact it has been the #1 selling console in the US for the last 23 months. This board has plenty of threads about this; we know this.

I wanna know why.

Why is everyone buying a Switch? It's it portability? Is it initial cost? It's it perceived cost of games? Is it the games? Is it the sheer breadth of age groups it appeals to?

Are you planning to get one? Why?

Please, give us your anecdotes, let's try to pin down for damn sure what is up with this Switch deal.

I have a launch regular Switch and Switch Lite I got around it’s launch as my other one has some minor screen damage from an unlucky drop and always hurt my hands/wrists in longer portable sessions.

I grew up on Nintendo and still love a lot of their games. I also love the portability. I use it a lot portable around the house. Get some gaming in while having sports I want to just keep an eye on on the TV, on the deck or hammock in the back yard when it’s nice out. Also love having a few beers on restaurant/bar patios and getting some gaming in.

They could no long be my sole or main platform, but I’d never miss out on Nintendo first party games and love having a portable option.

No plans of getting one.
Brother has one, and seems to play it all the time.
Nintendo has been on total boycott from me since Wii.

It's a personal system of course at some point people are gonna want to own one for each.

When Nintendo isn’t in a drought of content (that happens a lot with this system), it is absolutely magical. My time playing Super Mario Sunshine between on-the-go, tabletop, and TV last month was some of the most fun I’ve had all year.

Chalk it up to a really great understanding of fun, and versatile hardware.

If you’re playing handheld indies and ports of old games (I generally don’t), the deal only gets better.

Epic post by just the type of poster i was hoping to get to speak on this thread. Help me out here: If i got a switch, could i play like every flagship Zelda released this century? Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, obviously botw..? And what about Metroid Prime?

My sister has 4 kids and the oldest just turned 10 - all of her kids loved their PS4. Her oldest son (7) loves Pokemon. For her family, it was a no brainer to grab one last year.

Really only BOTW. Maybe the others will get ported next year for the anniversary, but the switch has 0 BC aside from NES/SNES online and ports/remasters.

My gf and I got one because of zelda and other exclusives down the line

Breath of the wild was a big disappointment though.

I'm a fan of Nintendo's games, so I bought a Switch on release. Both my mother and sister have their own Switches now to play Animal Crossing on.

Wii U actually a better choice here, for now. Wii compatibility (best experienced through a CRT TV, like the old days) for Skyward Sword, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD on the platform itself, BotW with a shitty framerate in towns, lol, and Virtual Console granting you Majora’s Mask (and Ocarina of Time, but not this century).

alas it looks like i'll be delaying my switch buy until 'next year' at the earliest..

Great games
Unprecedented convenience
Universal appeal
Local multiplayer wherever you go

Every gamer should have one, really
You know, the local multiplayer is cool. I saw kids on an airplane playing together on a single switch. They used a headphone splitter and both had earbuds in. Probably the best money their parents ever spent.

Love the portability of the Switch more than anything. It replaces the 3DS and Vita for me personally.

I think I've had it in the dock like twice ever?

It's mandatory to use some kind of grip though because it's not super comfortable without one.

Also bonus points to Nintendo for maintaining a snappy OS without a bunch of garbage cluttering the home screen.

No. Not yet anyway. Metroid Prime Trilogy has long been rumored, but nothing firm. Zelda is just BOTW and the Link’s Awakening remake. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess got WiiU HD remasters so many think those will hit Switch sometime, but nothing known. Skyward Sword port has been hinted at, but also nothing firm.

It’s really great for Mario games especially. All the NES and SNES ones in the apps that tome with their online service, Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 in the 3D All Stars and Mario Odyssey is great.

Lmao it's silly really. At the time I got my Switch in 2018, I really thought Bayonetta 3 would launch within 6 months or up to a year from when I got it. Big mistake lol. But I did play some cool stuff on the Switch like Astral Chain, which I'm on the verge of beating I think, and other stuff too.

My favorite things about the Switch are the portability, the detachable Joycons, the touchscreen, most of the ports of my favorite games asides from original releases exist on the platform. I like the Capture button which lets me take INSTANT screenshots (take note, Sony and PS4!) and depending on the game lets me record up to 30 seconds of video.

that sucks, i'm more of a zelda/metroid dude than a mario dude, so i guess i'll be holding off a bit for my switch pickup :) glad to know mario fans are getting a lot out of it though~

My brother is the only one in my family to buy himself a Switch.. I've been tempted numerous times on buying a Switch but I fucking hate the Joy Con sticks and drift. Nintendo really pissed me off in that area alone.

That's what came to mind as my main non-port game for Switch, yep. For Super Mario Odyssey, which I beat, I thought it was really fun, especially the exploration and music which were both top-tier. Unfortunately I have yet to re-acquire the game, as I traded it and other games in towards a HTC Vive purchase. As for LoZ BoTW, I thought about it recently. I love the physics of it. But I still haven't adapted to it's structure yet. The game kind of just throws you in without explanation so I don't quite know how to progress further. I did a couple of shrines but I still didn't even acquire the Paraglider yet. That's how much I suck at that game lol. Any other Switch games you'd like to ask my impressions about?

Thanks for giving me such a thoughtful reply, i think I'm good for now, I've learned in this thread that there isn't much Zelda or Metroid content on switch yet, so I'm probably satisfied with your answers here~ i hear diablo 3 is epic on switch, incidentally~

I bought one at launch and used it so much that the fan eventually started to fail. It was a better value to trade it in and get a red box version as opposed to Nintendo repairing it. I also bought each of my two kids a Switch Lite. We primarily play Animal Crossing together. It’s definitely worth the purchase so we can play together.

Me, my girlfriend, my Sister and my Cousin all own our own Switch because of:

Games - Nintendo games are generally high quality and provide me with something that I can't easily get on toner consoles.

Portability - It's nice to be able to play the same games on the TV but then effortless play them in bed or while traveling.

Local multiplayer - A lot of our favourite Switch games have a big local multiplayer component (Mario Kart, Smash Bros etc.) and it's just easier for us to all play together when we meet up if we have our own Switch.

I can't withstand nintendo, last time was back in n64 era...

Expensive games, bad graphics, bad online, bad hardware (switch must be worse than a snapdragon 865, 0 franchises that interest me, zero consumer friendly.

Guess I'm not the target audience...

I would have bought it whatever, as I have to have the latest Mario, Zelda etc.

I bought Switch and Switch Lite, as I get most variations of Nintendo handhelds, although I didn't get a 2DS. Whereas I only bought one Wii, Wii U and GameCube.

The breadth of games is fantastic, although I wish it had more racing Sims.

I think it makes an excellent companion console. If you're a gamer who buys two consoles, but not three, you're better off with a Switch and one of the others than with a PS and Xbox for variety of experiences, IMO.

I want one but the demo units at Target were so uncomfortable to hold. Specifically the handheld only one. I'm glad I didn't find that out after buying.
