Sounds like a good thing, I remember when I read it there was all this futuristic time-traveling mess.

Didn't the comics also undergo a Cosmic Retcon during the transition from the MD to Dreamcast era?

That seems rather accurate:

Ian Flynn also said something about a character possibly dying in the next issue, so there.

My understanding is no, they aren't. They're going to be ending on a major cliffhanger in the next issue, and then doing a five month spin-off that celebrates Sonic's 20th Anniversary (basically re-telling the plot of the old Genesis games, it sounds like).

When that's over, they'll be picking up directly where next month's cliffhanger leaves off.

Just read a couple of interviews; your correct; it's only a temporary reboot to celebrate Sonic's 20th. After the four issues it'll go right back to where it was.

Damn. Makes sense though, I guess they can't well throw away the whole universe they've built up, even stuffed with as much drama as it is.

Then again trying to tell a dramatic Sonic story isn't something I should really worry about as a fan of the games anyway.

Actually, you are. Ian Flynn's one of us, basically, and he's gone a long way towards cleaning up the book. Moving things back toward the game standards, cleaning up dangling plot points, bringing the fun back into it (instead of Penders and co writing never-ending drama that never gets resolved). I'd say for a Sonic book, with a long-established continuity, it's been pretty damn good the past few years.

I thought that was going to just be for the next five issues or so. If they blanked the universe, it wasn't because Ian wanted to do it, he's put too much effort into cleaning things up and setting new standards. If this is permanent, then someone from Sega decided to meddle.

That gameplay footage really surprised me in a lot of areas.

If there 1 thing that the past 3D games since Sonic Heroes have been missing...is pure STYLE that I loved from the SA/SA2 Era...

Its seems that that sense of style is returning and I love it...its the little things that count.

That's because the design was already done... It's just GHZ in 3D.

I just talking about the presentation as a whole not just the game. The results screen, the music the way it generally looks..the animations...everything looks so "FUCK YEAH YOUR GOING TO HAVE FUN AND YOUR GOING TO LIKE IT BITCH!" The game comes off as it wants you to enjoy yourself as much as possible...and I love that.

I'd also like to add that giving modern Sonic Alternate routes like that was brilliant...you can even SEE the other routes in the background...you can see hidden stuff all over the place you missed when the camera pans out...holy hell the amount of potential...the SOLIDNESS if this title is so dense...it feels as if its trying to shoot AAA here XD.

Seeing a whole bunch of 10/10 and 9/10 tossed at this title will make me very happy. (If the overall game is good that is.)

Only things keeping it from perfection are lack of 60fps, abundance of minor glitches (as with all Sonics), and lack of animations. By all means, not to say the animations are bad, but they are a far cry from the likes of Tekken or Mario.

You're right, the overall feel does seem to scream "Have fun!" Especially the neat little Sonic Adventure pose he does.

The alternate routes do give me hope, but I'm still not sure. The size of the platforming sections vs grinding/boosting sections is still in favor of boosting. If the later levels offer bigger play areas and more routes, then I'm in.

Edit: Geez, it died around here.

Apparently some spanish magazine confirmed a 3DS Sonic game. No one knows if it's Generations or not.

He is some more interview footage from the other day. A non-journalist got an interview with the big man. What event was this anyway? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0lPV0Cy_VU

Have to say that this game is looking great even though we've got around half a year to go. There was a mjor physics problem around the 4:35 mark though (going through the tunnel), which was reminiscent of Sonic Advance, though it seemed more of a bug than anything.

If I see Ice Cap Zone at E3, hype will rise.

where should I start with Sonic comics? the Universe series or some older tradebacks?
It's a bit far back (about 50 or so issues), but 175 is basically where Ian set up a pretty big event that deliberately left a lot of the characters "missing in action" so he could more or less trim the fat. It was nowhere near a complete "reboot", so there still are some callbacks, but I'd say that's probably a good place to start. It's where he established himself and "his version" of Sonic, more or less.

Granted, I haven't read an issue of Archie Sonic in years, so I'm sure somebody more familiar with them can probably state a more recent entry point.

Really weird that there's no Wii version, though it's of course easier to port a PS3/360 game to the 3DS than it is to the Wii.
Wonder if that means we'll see a Colors 2 at E3.

My god. Remove the references to current consoles, and that magazine could have come straight out of 1997.

Obviously Sonic wouldnt have been on a Nintendo console back then, but the double whammy of Classic Sonic and OoT is nostalgia to the EXTREEEME.

edit - lmfao. GAME BOY ADVANCE TOO!

Huh? Shaders aside, the power difference is so massive that it's not significantly (if at all) easier.

Anyway, I very much doubt that this is a direct port of the PS3/360 game with the same levels.

I'd love a Colours 2, but I don't see it happening. Fingers-crossed, though!

As for that cover...

Mega Man Legends? Shinobi? Sonic? Ocarina of Time? Game Boy Advance? Did this issue of Nintendo Power travel through time to the Good Future?

We need music for this situation.

this is going to be the best of the modern sonic games but it still has the worst of the same old flaws.

i don't want 50% of the game and i especially don't want to be forced to play through that 50%.

Anyone from the UK remember these?

N64 magazine was the fucking best. So so good. Oh, and they gave me a ton of free tat. Yay! But also, anyone else remember this?

I was with Digi until the very bitter end. Best gaming site/review/magazine/thing ever.

There hasn't, but Iizuka said something about doing a "behind-the-back" Sonic game for the 3DS. I'll try to find the quote.

As I said earlier in the thread, this may force my hand on a 3DS earlier than I expected.

Edit: I think this Sonic issue is the last issue of NP for my subscription. Gonna have to hit up Amazon to see if there's any deals runnin'.

Couldn't find a good link, but Wiki has the quote.

"At Sonic Team, we’re already studying the Nintendo 3DS. We’re very interested in the platform. We think the depth of 3D could really help the sense of speed, especially when you’re playing Sonic from behind-the-back perspective."

http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_3DS_(working_title)#cite_note-1

So yeah, it should switch between 2D and 3D perspectives just like the console version.

When's this out, tomorrow? I'll have to trek to the convenience store after lecture. Our campus convenience store isn't cool enough to carry Nintendo Power.

Wonderful! Though... does this mean that they're using the same stages as the console versions? That'd be a little disappointing if true.

there isn't anything in the quote that would indicate that so, we will have to wait until the previews/info gets posted

Yeah, it'd be a perfect opportunity to include stages from, say, the Master System versions, handheld games, spin-offs (Secret Rings etc.).

Can't wait to see what it looks like.

Maybe the visuals will look at least as close as Sonic Colors? As weird as that sounds for a handheld that strong. As long as the style looks good then it should be fine. Obviously I can't say anything gameplay wise yet but hopefully that should change in about two weeks.

It would probably be very much like porting it to the Wii or Gamecube really.. but obviously making it look nicer with graphical flourishes and shaders that the Pica200 is good at. A 200mhz pica200 has similar poly performance to flipper, but much higher pixel fillrate I believe...

and I believe Nintendo have underclocked the GPU to 160mhz? Was that ever confirmed? I do wonder whether they will allow some games to run it at higher clock speeds the way later PSP games did, or if they will ever allow non-3D games or one-screen games that push the system some more. That would keep things interesting... they'd need a better battery though.

I don't see Sonic Generations doing anything that couldn't be scaled down if they thought ahead and planned for the 3DS port...

Agreed, this is one awesome cover. Even the yellow background is ultra 90s. I literally have to buy it.

Also seen an auction on eBay for issues #175-182 for the Archie Sonic comics. Seems like a good point to jump into my first ever comic if there aren't any references.

Did anyone hear Jeff on the latest BombCast btw slamming Generations?! He seemed to think that it had no relevance with Sonic 4 already being produced. Plus he said it was for the Wii, and denied it was a compilation (which it actually is). Honestly, this is the first time I've properly raged at a journalist when they seemed to be so poorly informed of a game. Anyone can tell this could be the best Sonic game in a long time, even after the very good Colours.

The Bombcast guys have always been really hard on Sonic - there's Ryan's weird frothing Sonic 4 rant, despite being the guy who gave Sonic Heroes a generally favorable review back at Gamespot (when they were known for being pretty unforgiving score-wise). That awkward rant was followed by an even more awkward apology for it in the Bombcast directly following.

Jeff in particular though has very weird opinions about the Sonic franchise. I think he's admitted he never really "got" the games, and he's mentioned multiple times his bizarre hatred for Sonic 3 (he doesn't like the game's visual style; specifically the way Sonic's sprite looks).

So yeah. I love GiantBomb, but eff those guys when it comes to the Sonic franchise.

Casino Night and Launch Base are confirmed for the 3DS version and are exclusive to it (Big Hand boss fight, huzzah!). The special stages seem to be taken from Heroes.

Also, the people predicting a Colours DS situation were correct, both gameplay styles are in 2D (though apparently the physics have been tweaked a bit from the old Rush engine...don't quote me on that though).

I'd link to the images, but obviously scans are banned lol.

Ryan has admitted in a previous podcast that he hates modern Sonic games and won't even touch them or give them a chance.

EDIT: Sega1991 was right. It was Ryan. My bad.

Nintendo power scans got leaked, its confirmed to be developed by Dimps & Sonic Team... basically dimps if judging by past history on collaborations

So.. Sonic Rush
More quotes from the legendary Iizuka-san from the interview

"From the start of the project, the concept was to bring Genesis-era Sonic and Present-day Sonic together. On consoles modern-day Sonic is best represented by action 3D-action games like Sonic Colors, which switch between side-view and head-on 3D perspectives. Oh handheld platforms, on the other hand, modern day Sonic is represented by games like Sonic Rush and Sonic Colors, where Sonic uses the Sonic Boost to run at high speeds. That's why we decided to use that style of gameplay from the handheld version."

"From all that we made a list of console and N3DS versions and divided them up"

History of dimps partially confirmed for handheld version. I'm sure by 3DS he meant DS.
Also confirms the HD version isn't all boosting

EDIT: Also says custom physics built by dimps
