"HEY, I'M PRETTY SURE WE GOT THE REAL DEAL FROM A FRIEND OF MY AUNTIE WHO WORKS THERE GUYS"

Might as well ignore TSSZ until the game is released. It's like a new Sonic Cycle, but for stage lists.
Hey, at least the one I posted was the same guy who leaked the change in voice actors last year (I guess that was apparently a big deal at the time?) :[

Though parts of it is already off, though it was posted under the pretense it was an early level choice... It was kind of right about how character cameos would work I guess? Also don't see them resurrecting Classic Sonic and drum up nostalgia for his games just to have only one third of the game actually about him. I'm still very optimistic Sonic 3 and Sonic CD will have levels in this game, what with the much longer dev time and the inevitable Sonic Unleashed and Colors (and even '06) levels likely requiring much less work and creation of assets than the rest of the game. Wish RubyEclipse would show up and just give a simple 'yes' or 'no' if that less than appealing level list is BS or not.

From what I've personally gathered, it's not a list that people are happy to spread about, but there's been some questioning about other things that made the list look legitimate by association. I don't know personally, it does seem like a lot of city settings. But those are pretty much the iconic/demo stages of each of those games, with like one exception.

Sonic 1 – Green Hill (Flagship of the series)
Sonic 2 – Chemical Plant (I think the second demo the game plays, EHZ can't be used for obvious reasons)
Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Sky Sanctuary (Wild card!)
Sonic Adventure – Speed Highway (This was the first Sonic Adventure stage shown off, one of the earliest completed, the one in many of the commercials)
Sonic Adventure 2 - City Escape (Iconic introduction stage)
Sonic Heroes – Seaside Hill OR Casino Park / Bingo Highway (Seaside Hill has gotten a lot of use lately, but in a game with GHZ, I'd guess Casino Park with Bingo Highway elements, if they went between these two. Egg Fleet would be nice, but bucks most of the trend.)
Sonic 2006 – Crisis City (Crisis City was unfortunately a feature stage, it's the starter stage for Silver, and it's featured on some of the earliest leaked promo art, and on the Xbox Live Games on Demand listing)
Sonic Unleashed – Spagonia / Rooftop Run Day (Technically Mazuri leaked out first, but I think Spagonia was the first officially-featured stages)
Sonic Colors – Planet Wisp (Cover art for Sonic Colors)

So it has a certain logic to it, it's the stages people easily remember. But yes, there's a lot of overlap.

Would Sega really be stupid enough to pass on an opportunity to revisit the Stardust Speedway Metal Sonic race?

Actually, don't answer that.

Oh, I don't think it's the stage selection itself which seems off (though I really don't know what it is about Sky Sanctuary people love so much over Flying Battery or Lava Reef) just the omission of Sonic 3 and Sonic CD which throws the balance of representation of the two Sonic's off. Plus it keeps the stage count the same as Unleashed's, when this game has had both a longer development time and is taking 3 levels from this generation, two of which have already been down very closely to Generation's game play style from this generation (in otherwords, beyond level layouts and a few changes for Classic Sonic, they have a lot less work laid out for them for the Unleashed and Colors portion of the game in comparison to everything else). It'd seem weird they technically got less done for Generations than Unleashed with a much longer development period, and when pulling content from pre-existing games rather than developing from scratch.

Not to mention an identical list was outed as fake by an Archie employee on another Sonic fan site. Hasn't that TSSZ guy (don't want to get too offensive since I'm under the impression a couple people here are friends with him) been tricked before quite a few times apparently?

It's more a matter that the game seems to be using a whole lot of either greenery stages OR city stages, with very little in between.

Sonic 1 – Green Hill (Green)
Sonic 2 – Chemical Plant (City)
Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Sky Sanctuary (Wild card!)
Sonic Adventure – Speed Highway (City)
Sonic Adventure 2 - City Escape (City)
Sonic Heroes – Seaside Hill OR Casino Park / Bingo Highway (Green OR City)
Sonic 2006 – Crisis City (City)
Sonic Unleashed – Spagonia / Rooftop Run Day (City)
Sonic Colors – Planet Wisp (Bit of Both, Green with under construction city)

I mean if you want to change it up, Sonic Adventure's Ice Cap, Lost World or Red Mountain would be a far better choice than Speed Highway. Casino from Sonic Heroes, Nothing from 2006, Chun-Nan or Mazuri from Unleashed (Sand or Chinese) or Aquarium Park / Sweet Mountain from Colors. Death Egg for S3&K too :p

Mmhmm.

Sky Sanctuary doesn't have nearly the same effect on its own without Death Egg, Lava Reef and Hidden Palace. It's a good stage with good music, but that buildup in Sonic 3 & Knuckles was something else. I think that's part of the reason I loved that endgame so much. Such a dramatic finish.

Separate S3&K and add Ice Cap from Sonic 3, and Flying Battery from S&K. Swap SA's Speed Highway for Red Mountain to fill the lava niche. Keep Seaside Hill from Heroes (with plenty of water elements to differentiate it from Green Hill) and add in Stardust Speedway from CD to fill the casino/physics showcase niche. Add Death Egg/Doomsday combination because there has to be a decent final level.

Done and done.

Indeed. Also Lava Reef/Hidden Palace must BOTH be in.

Chances that neither will be in there? High :(

Seriously.

Hell, Death Egg + Doomsday alone make up one of my favorite final boss sequences ever.

Levels that should be in this game
Sonic 2 chemical plant
Sonic 3 hydrocity, ice cap
Sonic & Knuckles flying battery, lava reef, doomsday
Sonic CD chaos collsion
Sonic adventure windy valley, speed highway
Sonic Heroes power plant or nothing
Sonic 06 kingdom valley, crisis city
Sonic Unleashed wish it was apotos or cool edge

The thing is about that list, that's exactly the kind of dumb you would expect from Sega these days. On one hand, yeah, the "city" environment is a pretty iconic level theme, but on the other hand, they're ignoring tons of great levels to focus on one subset.

What about ruins? Sonic games typically feature ruins in them a lot, too. Let's see some Lost World action - that's a hell of a stage. Windy Valley is almost as iconic as Speed Highway, too.

Metal Harbor is second only to City Escape, and that's actually pretty non-standard as far as level themes go.

Why not Carnival Night? The barrel is iconic enough that you could reference it tongue-in-cheek while simultaneously redeeming it. Marble Garden is another good ruins stage, too. Or, I mean, jeeze, Ice Cap?

And then there's Mushroom Hill with its changing seasons, Lava Reef...

Egg Fleet in Sonic Heroes has spectacle coming out of its ears, with the sense of height it portrays, and outside of maybe Chemical Plant, there are no other factory/stronghold stages.

I always felt Radical Train would be interesting in a better game, with its criss-crossing tracks and train-racing gimmick.

You don't want to believe somebody at Sonic Team would ignore all of these great levels in favor of a bunch of City Stages, but it's one of those things that you just know they did. Even on the best recent Sonic games, there's always that one thing that still feels super out-of-touch with reality.

I still want to know why neither of the people who've proposed that specific list so far can lock down a Heroes level. A game that's been in development for three years doesn't have decisions like that left this close to release.

don't forget who the leader of sonic team is =P I wouldn't be surprised if the game was based off his favorite levels. Although that doesn't mean it will be bad. Judging by City Escape the game looks like it's going to be pretty fun. regardless of setting.

Unfortunately, that's what it may come down to. Ideally it's wrong, because there's all these other hints of them really celebrating Sonic's history with little touches, like the trick pose above. You kind of get the feeling they "get it" with the console versions, and it would be a shame to find out they only skimmed the very surface of Sonic's history. (This game desperately needs DLC. If the engine's solid enough, they could milk nostalgia for a long time. Then bundle it all up for the Wii U version.)

But then you have the 3DS version, which has been cited as celebrating Sonic's portable history as well, yet may not include a single stage prior to his Game Boy Advance appearance. I'm not expecting stages from Sonic Labyrinth, but there's several games full of unique content they could pull something from.

Or their information is just old. Doesn't necessarily make it inaccurate. I'm not saying I believe it is, I just... wouldn't be surprised.

Much like Sonic Colors, this game seems to pay a lot of attention to minor details that help to flesh out its personality. The video that shows off the Sonic Adventure pose at the end of the combo string and the little victory animation for the crab was great, and I love the way that they placed the skateboard into an item box for classic Sonic's City Escape level.

NO. That music is so offensive to my ears. I can't take it. It says something when I can find the strange beauty in this
where it's meant to sound obnoxious and horrible based on a weird definition of "art"
, yet I can't stand this... but Sonic Chronicles is the worst. I'll concede that Hill Top isn't the worst BGM I've heard, but it ranks among my least favourite BGMs in the series.

The level itself is alright. The lava defies the laws of physics, and Tails seems to get hurt quite often. But Lava Reef > Hill Top. It also has better music.

If SEGA always made the best business decisions, they'd do this. IIRC, Unleashed's DLC was announced after the game was released, so maybe they're going to do it like that again? They could make a lot of people happy. Perhaps we might get some new info that coincides with June 23rd. (I'm not holding my breath since E3 was not too long ago and they had Sonic Boom (and the upcoming Summer of Sonic), so why would they bother?)

If I could choose one level from each game to be recreated, I'd pick these

Sonic 1- Green Hill
Sonic 2- Chemical Plant
Sonic 3- Hydrocity
Sonic & K: Sky Sanctuary
Sonic CD: Collision Chaos
SA1: Lost World
SA2: City Escape
Heroes: Mystic Mansion
Shadow (lol): Circus Park
Unleashed: Dragon Road
Colors: Planet Wisp

I haven't played Sonic 06. I feel like my list is pretty well-rounded.

It's possible, but given how information leaks out of Sega like a sieve, it seems like we would've heard it earlier if it really was that old.

I dunno, I just don't want to believe. D:

Psst! Hey guys... sega can use other levels from other sonic games in generations 2, 3 and 4. No reason to worry about them not being able to cram everything into the first one.

Sega's master plan: release 4 or 5 phoney lists and throwoff everyone.

If there's one thing Sega's been good at with Sonic, even in their darkest days, it's stage variety. I find it hard to believe they'd fuck up with 4 city zones with a game this important. So until a final list can prove me wrong, there's no way it'll be city escape > speed highway > crisis city > spagonia

The way Iizuka's talked, the phrasing Aaron has used, Generations really might be a one-time thing. I get the feeling including Classic Sonic was a big battle, and I'm not sure which side of that battle Iizuka was on, for one thing.

Maybe we'll get a sequel, but I think this is an anniversary effort, that we might see extended out with DLC. From there it's a big question mark, but we can't count on there being a second one.

The only reason they're revisiting old levels is because it's Sonic's 20th anniversary. I wouldn't be expecting a Generations 2. Besides I don't want to be playing old levels for eternity >.>

I don't know, every 5 year anniversary from here on will carry some heavy weight on it. 25th, 30th are big milestones, I'm sure they'll follow up Generations in some form. It'll be 10 years before you know it! God, it feels like yesterday I stood in awe at the whale chase in a funcoland.

If the game sells well as it should... you really think they won't milk the hell out of it? There's a new sonic pretty much every year anyway. You'd reject the idea of this sweet milk every year?

Anyway, judging by a lot of people's lists throughout the internet, it's pretty evident that people want Super Sonic 3 & Hyper Fighting Knuckles Turbo HD Remix (and by extension: Super Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Hyper Fighting HD Remix Arcade Edition).

I really hope that list isn't true and Sky Sanctuary doesn't end up being the only Sonic 3 & Knuckles level in Generations, there are so many that are better than it. Hydrocity, Carnival Night, Ice Cap, Flying Battery, Lava Reef. Hell, they could probably do something cool with Sandopolis with modern Sonic.
To me, Sky Sanctuary just felt like the calm before the storm level right before Death Egg. I mean, it looks nice but without the run up to the Death Egg at the end and the bit with Knuckles right before it, it's kind of a boring zone.

It's just frustrating that fans have been wanting classic Sonic to return for 16 years and when he finally does if this list is true Modern Sonic hedgehogs 2/3 of the levels. Do we really need to have levels from super recent games like Unleashed and Colors that already use the current Modern Sonic formula? They should have gone 50/50 and stuck to Genesis -> Dreamcast.

Well to be fair this is a celebration of the Sonic series as a whole, and there are more modern Sonic games than Mega Drive ones.

I guess they want to remain true to the "Generations" portion of the game's title, and that's why they're including some of the most recent mainline games. But you have a point: Modern Sonic's levels would outnumber Classic Sonic's. They can't have only three levels from Classic Sonic's games, and a ton of levels from Modern Sonic's games. That would be a little unfair. At least, that's what I think. Who knows what exactly Sonic Team thinks. On the other side of the argument, it's perfectly logical with regards to how many Modern levels there are vs how many Classic levels there are in the game.

I'm not trusting any rumoured or "leaked" lists, to be honest with you.

And that's exactly why there should be more Classic Sonic levels to even it out. There have been more Modern Sonic games. He's had 16 years, Classic Sonic only got 4 years. If they wanted to divide the levels by 3rds they might as well have had 3 acts per level and introduced Dreamcast Sonic as a 3rd character.

Yeah, I agree that Colors and Unleashed seem a bit too recent to revisit. Although my hope is that since their assets are much easier to "port" into this game due to their similarities in gameplay and style, this will free up their production resources into different stages from other games. With Unleashed they had to create an engine from scratch plus two utterly different gameplay styles to cater to, and they still cranked out 8 zones. I'm hoping they managed to squeeze in way more content this time, especially considering how long it's been in production.

If you weren't revisiting Unleashed and Colours, then you be focusing on both of the Adventure games and 2006 really. I doubt they're going to go back to Secret Rings and Black Knight (even though SR was average). Unleashed and Colours both had good moments, so put them in.

Oh, and I just checked out my Sonic Colours box art and it isn't Planet Wisp on the front: it's the first zone.

No, seriously. Wat.

...No, I shouldn't be in disbelief. There are people on YouTube who believe Beyond the Beyond was the best PS1 RPG.

There are people who believe that Virtual Hydlide is one of the best games ever and is "better than most of the games we have now".

I'm sure that there are people out there who sincerely believe the CD-i Zelda and Mario games gameplay-wise were amazing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are people out there who believe that Hoshi wo Miru Hito is one of the best games ever made. That's what I'd call an insane person.
And there's people on youtube that called X7 an underrated game and claims it's the best Mega Man X game... just because it's 3D.

Oh and there's also people who notes that themselves don't like Sonic 06 but would call anyone not a true Sonic fan if they don't appreciate that horrible mess!

Also, I have a "friend" who thinks Sonic 4 and Metroid: The Other M are great games and would get upset every time someone bashes either game. For Other M, he thinks the story is great and really likes how they handled Samus in the game. He also thinks physics doesn't matter in a Sonic game. What the fuck.

I really really hate people.
