"We have growing confidence that we'll be supply constrained with this product, but we'll do our very best to meet demand," House said in an exclusive conversation with CNBC.com. "Virtual reality is a medium that's in its infancy. With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it's difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be."

"We're obviously very excited about the overall future potential for virtual reality and we think it's the right opportunity to start to build a market," says House. "But we need to keep reminding ourselves that you're requiring a very different user engagement than we have seen previously. … The experiences we are delivering are truly transformative for gaming and that will inspire a certain audience. How large that audience is remains to be seen."

PlayStation VR titles, he says, will generally range in price from $20-$40, though there will be some games at higher and lower price points.

Where's that "VR is dead on arrival" thread?

I'm pretty sold on their VR device now given that they seem to be supporting a lot of software for it

A day after Sony's E3 presentation and not a single thread about any VR games on the first page.

I use Gaf as my market predictor and it doesn't seem to look to hot ;p

Good luck Sony! (more interested in the inevitable Neo)

I'm pretty confident I will find one within a few weeks of it launching.

I don't expect them to "fly off the shelves" at $400

Meh, the psvr pre-order thread was blowing up here when that went live (and then didn't lol). It's a platform type most haven't had experience with yet, give it time. Day 0 with this stuff.

Cancelled my pre-order for Neo instead, can't afford both.
You can pre-order the Neo?

Glad I got my PSVR on pre-order from Amazon, although I did sell my PS4 expecting the Neo to come out in the fall. Looks like I'll be staring at the PSVR box until the Neo comes out.

I see they have prices for games up on PSN.

I honestly thought PS VR worlds would be a free pack in. It probably should be like Wii sports.

Most of the games supporting it appear to be novelty games or side missions in non vr games.

400 US dollars.. Tak Fuji "Woooooow"

This is almost going to be as bad as Magic Book or whatever the book thing was.. yeouch.

I just don't think VR is a more than a novel curiosity.. The least of all consumers who would buy it would be console gamers.

Unless the shipments are small, I really can't see there being supply shortages at $499 for the bundle. At least not a prolonged one.

I'm half kidding, there will be early adopters for sure.

I would have been one of them but I was hit with a large bout of Labrynthitis (inner ear infection) years ago and while it is thankfully gone I avoid anything now that could trigger vertigo

I got a date update from Amazon yesterday. 31st to 13th of Oct.

Where's that "VR is dead on arrival" thread?

I don't think VR will be dead on arrival, but there are plenty of reasons for supply constraint that aren't necessarily connected to success.

I pre ordered two (one for the bundle/one without and I was eventually going to decide which one I kept) but I'm going to cancel it and wait to see how things fall next year. I really am interested in Fallout 4 VR so I may bite the bullet and build a PC and buy a vive for that instead.

I mean I really want PSVR to succeed and it would be simpler for me to just buy one. I Hear the headset is the most comfortable (especially if you have glasses). But honestly Fallout VR is the first game that I really think I'd buy VR for (I was going to cancel if no games for it came out that sounded interesting enough). That I'd be ok with if it is the only game that came out for VR. (I would have also bought VR for No Man's Sky).

Smart of them to mention that, because if PSVR does take off, it'll increase the perceived value of the headset early on if there's less of them in the supply chain. Same principle Nintendo's been using for ages.

company that wants to sell a new product, says that the product is on high demand to entince people to pre'order or buy earlier. also the sky is blue

Agreed, and the lol part of the OP is that House states it's more of a supply issue and demand is a "remains to be seen" outlook.

  • Devkits have been in the hands of developers since the end of April.

NEO kits are already out there lol.

[*]Retail partners have been informed from the end of march: (Osiris is with GS IIRC)

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1202462

  • Shinobi mentioned on the Super Deformed Gamescast, and I quote:
I’ve heard that Sony will announce the PS4 Neo at Paris Games Week. This made sense to me because the supposed upgrades are coming in what, October? I would have said this publicly if I was 100% sure, but it’s just what I was told.

  • We know that the internal papers Sony sent out, states that all games starting from october has to be Neo compatible:
    http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/sources-the-upgraded-playstation-4-is-codenamed-ne/1100-5437

Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.
  • We have musings from neogaffer SneakersSO: (I honestly don't know his credibility)
    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=206974815&postcount=12589

Neo is launching this year. $399. Tons of devs got kits, fall games are currently going to be supporting it. You'll be hearing about all this towards August/Sept. The Neo + VR combo is probably going to launch at the end of next year, when they introduce their VR-centric controller that they've been working on.

Them not talking about it at E3 doesn't change anything. In fact it makes a damn lot of sense not to talk about your upgraded hardware, 3-4 months before it's releasing.

They're going the one ecosystem, upgrade every few years route, for lack of a better comparison, look at what the tablet, mobile - heck overall tech industry is doing.
They're gonna announce the product and release it in a relatively short timeframe thereafter, a month tops - that's what I'm betting on.

See to me, that tells me that supplies will be scarce. Less than what was originally proposed. That's why House made these statements.
